    Nonlinear cross Gramians and gradient systems

    We study the notion of cross Gramians for non-linear gradient systems, using the characterization in terms of prolongation and gradient extension associated to the system. The cross Gramian is given for the variational system associated to the original nonlinear gradient system. We obtain linearization results that precisely correspond to the notion of a cross Gramian for symmetric linear systems. Furthermore, first steps towards relations with the singular value functions of the nonlinear Hankel operator are studied and yield promising results.

    Dynamics of cosmological models with nonlinear classical phantom scalar fields. II. Qualitative analysis and numerical modeling

    A detailed qualitative analysis and numerical modeling of the evolution of cosmological models based on nonlinear classical and phantom scalar fields with self-action are performed. Complete phase portraits of the corresponding dynamical systems and their projections onto the Poincar\'e sphere are constructed. It is shown that the phase trajectories of the corresponding dynamical systems can, depending on the parameters of the model of the scalar field, split into bifurcation trajectories along 2, 4, or 6 different dynamical flows. In the phase space of such systems, regions can appear which are inaccessible for motion. Here phase trajectories of the phantom scalar field wind around one of the symmetric foci (centers) while the phase trajectories of the classical scalar field can have a limit cycle determined by the zero effective energy corresponding to a Euclidean Universe.Comment: 10 pages, 16 figure

    Multi-agent decision-making dynamics inspired by honeybees

    When choosing between candidate nest sites, a honeybee swarm reliably chooses the most valuable site and even when faced with the choice between near-equal value sites, it makes highly efficient decisions. Value-sensitive decision-making is enabled by a distributed social effort among the honeybees, and it leads to decision-making dynamics of the swarm that are remarkably robust to perturbation and adaptive to change. To explore and generalize these features to other networks, we design distributed multi-agent network dynamics that exhibit a pitchfork bifurcation, ubiquitous in biological models of decision-making. Using tools of nonlinear dynamics we show how the designed agent-based dynamics recover the high performing value-sensitive decision-making of the honeybees and rigorously connect investigation of mechanisms of animal group decision-making to systematic, bio-inspired control of multi-agent network systems. We further present a distributed adaptive bifurcation control law and prove how it enhances the network decision-making performance beyond that observed in swarms

    Energy preserving model order reduction of the nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation

    An energy preserving reduced order model is developed for two dimensional nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation (NLSE) with plane wave solutions and with an external potential. The NLSE is discretized in space by the symmetric interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin (SIPG) method. The resulting system of Hamiltonian ordinary differential equations are integrated in time by the energy preserving average vector field (AVF) method. The mass and energy preserving reduced order model (ROM) is constructed by proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) Galerkin projection. The nonlinearities are computed for the ROM efficiently by discrete empirical interpolation method (DEIM) and dynamic mode decomposition (DMD). Preservation of the semi-discrete energy and mass are shown for the full order model (FOM) and for the ROM which ensures the long term stability of the solutions. Numerical simulations illustrate the preservation of the energy and mass in the reduced order model for the two dimensional NLSE with and without the external potential. The POD-DMD makes a remarkable improvement in computational speed-up over the POD-DEIM. Both methods approximate accurately the FOM, whereas POD-DEIM is more accurate than the POD-DMD

    System Gramian matrices are a well-known encoding for properties of input-output systems such as controllability, observability or minimality. These so-called system Gramians were developed in linear system theory for applications such as model order reduction of control systems. Empirical Gramian are an extension to the system Gramians for parametric and nonlinear systems as well as a data-driven method of computation. The empirical Gramian framework - emgr - implements the empirical Gramians in a uniform and configurable manner, with applications such as Gramian-based (nonlinear) model reduction, decentralized control, sensitivity analysis, parameter identification and combined state and parameter reduction

    Synchronization of Nonlinear Circuits in Dynamic Electrical Networks with General Topologies

    Sufficient conditions are derived for global asymptotic synchronization in a system of identical nonlinear electrical circuits coupled through linear time-invariant (LTI) electrical networks. In particular, the conditions we derive apply to settings where: i) the nonlinear circuits are composed of a parallel combination of passive LTI circuit elements and a nonlinear voltage-dependent current source with finite gain; and ii) a collection of these circuits are coupled through either uniform or homogeneous LTI electrical networks. Uniform electrical networks have identical per-unit-length impedances. Homogeneous electrical networks are characterized by having the same effective impedance between any two terminals with the others open circuited. Synchronization in these networks is guaranteed by ensuring the stability of an equivalent coordinate-transformed differential system that emphasizes signal differences. The applicability of the synchronization conditions to this broad class of networks follows from leveraging recent results on structural and spectral properties of Kron reduction---a model-reduction procedure that isolates the interactions of the nonlinear circuits in the network. The validity of the analytical results is demonstrated with simulations in networks of coupled Chua's circuits
