A Hybrid Photovoltaic-Fuel Cell for Grid Integration With Jaya-Based Maximum Power Point Tracking:Experimental Performance Evaluation

    Get PDF
This paper deals the grid integration of photovoltaic (PV), fuel cell, and ultra-capacitor with maximum power point tracking (MPPT). The voltage oriented control for the grid-integrated inverter is proposed to regulate dc link voltage. Here, the fuel cell is employed as the main renewable energy source and PV as an auxiliary source with ultra-capacitor, which compensates power variation. An integrated CUK converter is proposed for peak power extraction from PV modules. The Jaya-based MPPT method is employed to achieve fast PV tracking ability with zero deviation around maximum power point (MPP) and has accelerated searched performance in equated with particle swarm optimization (PSO) and artificial bee colony (ABC) techniques. The hybrid PV-fuel cell with ultra-capacitor as energy storage works effectively under varying operating conditions. Compared to other energy storing devices, ultra-capacitor provides a fast dynamic response by absorbing/delivering power fluctuations. The hybrid PV-fuel storage control methodologies are experimentally validated using dSPACE (DS1104) board that provides optimal power extraction with stable power affirmation for a standalone/grid-connected system

Discrete Model-Predictive-Control-Based Maximum Power Point Tracking for PV Systems:Overview and Evaluation

    Get PDF
The main objective of this work is to provide an overview and evaluation of discrete model-predictive control (MPC)-based maximum power point tracking (MPPT) for photovoltaic systems. A large number of MPC-based MPPT methods have been recently introduced in the literature with very promising performance; however, an in-depth investigation and comparison of these methods has not been carried out yet. Therefore, this paper has set out to provide an in-depth analysis and evaluation of MPC-based MPPT methods applied to various common power converter topologies. The performance of MPC-based MPPT is directly linked with the converter topology, and it is also affected by the accurate determination of the converter parameters; sensitivity to converter parameter variations is also investigated. The static and dynamic performance of the trackers is assessed according to the EN 50530 standard, using detailed simulation models, and validated by experimental tests. The analysis in this work aims to present useful insight for practicing engineers and academic researchers when selecting the maximum power point tracker for their application.</p

Reliability-driven assessment of GaN HEMTs and Si IGBTs in 3L-ANPC PV inverters

    Get PDF
In this paper, thermal loading of the state-of-the-art GaN HEMTs and traditional Si IGBTs in 3L-ANPC PV inverters is presented considering real-field long-term mission profiles (i.e., ambient temperature and solar irradiance). A comparison of Si IGBT against GaN HEMT with three different possibilities: 1) with TIM at 10 kHz, 2) without TIM at 10 kHz, and 3) with TIM at 300 kHz has been performed. The assessment results indicate lower thermal stress with GaN HEMT devices at 10 kHz in comparison to Si IGBT. At high switching frequencies, the results show significant system level cost savings can be achieved without compromise of operating efficiency with GaN HEMTs. Both simulations and experimental tests are provided to demonstrate the thermal loading analysis approach. More important, the proposed analysis and comparison approach can be used for lifetime and reliability analysis of wide-bandgap devices
