Efficient Spectral Domain MoM for the Design of Circularly Polarized Reflectarray Antennas Made of Split Rings

    Get PDF
The method of moments (MoM) in the spectral domain is used for the analysis of the scattering of a plane wave by a multilayered periodic structure containing conducting concentric split rings in the unit cell. Basis functions accounting for edge singularities are used in the approximation of the current density on the split rings, which makes it possible a fast convergence of MoM with respect to the number of basis functions. Since the 2-D Fourier transforms of the basis functions cannot be obtained in closed-form, judicious tricks (controlled truncation of infinite summations, interpolations, etc.) are used for the efficient numerical determination of these Fourier transforms. The implemented spectral domain MoM software has been used in the design of a circularly polarized reflectarray antenna based on split rings under the local periodicity condition. The antenna has been analyzed with our spectral domain MoM software, with CST and with HFSS, and good agreement has been found among all sets of results. Our software has proven to be around 27 times faster than CST and HFSS

A planar integrated folded reflectarray antenna with circular polarization

This communication presents the complete design of a circularly polarized (CP) folded reflectarray (FRA) antenna with an integrated planar structure for the first time in the open literature. To achieve circularly polarized, a printed meander-line polarizer is designed and integrated with the linearly polarized (LP) FRA. To achieve a low-profile planar structure, an integrated 2×2 planar array is designed as the feed source instead of a horn. Thus, the whole antenna, including the feed source, LPFRA, and meander-line polarizer, can be fully integrated and fabricated using low-cost printed circuit board technology. To validate the concept, a right-handed CPFRA operating in C-band is designed, fabricated, and measured. The broadside axial ratio (AR) of the proposed CPFRA is lower than 1 dB over a bandwidth from 5.22 to 5.46 GHz. In addition, the maximum gain of 22.8 dBic is obtained at 5.38 GHz with the antenna efficiency of 27%. The antenna is promising for applications in satellite communication due to advantages of low profile, easy fabrication, low cost, and high gain

This is the accepted manuscript version of an article which has been published in final form at https://doi.org/10.1109/TAP.2023.3247943A wideband circularly polarized (CP) reflectarray (RA) antenna using rotational symmetrical crossed dipoles is presented. This is the first time investigating coupled crossed dipoles as the unit cell for wideband reflection bandwidth in the CP RA design. Equivalent circuit analysis shows that when a CP wave impinges on the designed unit cell, two series resonances, and two parallel resonances are simultaneously excited on the crossed dipoles. Owing to these four different resonances, the CP reflection bandwidth is greatly improved and elaborately adjusted by controlling the coupling between the crossed dipoles. The CP reflection bandwidth ratio of the unit cell is enhanced up to 2:1 for Sx<−15S_{x} < -15 dB with a thin thickness of 0.12λ00.12 \lambda {0}. Based on this unit cell, a wideband -20° collimated CP RA antenna with a circular aperture of 316 unit cells was designed, fabricated, and measured for final performance verification. The measured results show that a wide CP bandwidth of 7.6-15.9 GHz is achieved with the axial ratio (AR) < 3 dB. In addition, the measured 3 dB gain bandwidth is better than 43.7% with a peak realized gain of 26.3 dBic and maximum aperture efficiency (AE) of 58.3%.Peer reviewe

Transmit–receive parabolic reflectarray to generate two beams per feed for multispot satellite antennas in Ka-band

    Get PDF
This contribution describes the design of a multibeam parabolic reflectarray to produce two adjacent beams per feed in orthogonal circular Polarization (CP) simultaneously at transmit (Tx) and receive (Rx) frequencies in Ka-band. The Variable Rotation Technique (VRT) has been applied to reflectarray cells based on two types of resonant elements, which makes it possible to provide orthogonal beams at Tx and Rx, as well as to implement an in-band optimization procedure to reduce the cross-polarization. A 90-cm parabolic reflectarray has been designed, manufactured and tested to produce multiple adjacent beams in RHCP and LHCP at both 20 and 30 GHz. The results are satisfactory and validate the concept of generating two spaced beams in orthogonal CP by a single feed, changing the polarization of the beam between Tx and Rx. This concept can be suitable for multispot satellites in Ka-band, enabling to halve the number of onboard antennas and feedsAgencia Estatal de Investigación | Ref. © 2021 IEEE - All rights reserved. This is the accepted manuscript version of an article which has been published in final form at https://doi.org/10.1109/TAP.2021.3111172A novel reflect array (RA) with ultra-low-profile and 2-bit phase quantization beam-steering ability is presented in this paper. To reduce the profile, a Leaky-wave feed is used to excite the RA with enhanced illumination efficiency. Moreover, simultaneous sum and difference patterns are also obtained to provide beam flexibility. The entire thickness of the proposed RA is less than 3% of that of the conventional front-fed RA with the same aperture. To increase the efficiency of the RA, a novel unit cell consisting of a polarizer layer and a reflection layer is developed, which is configured to provide polarization rotation and 2-bit phase shifts by using a hybrid of tunable polarization and discrete resonator. The operation principle, theoretical explanation, and implementation of the proposed antenna are elaborated in this work. To prove the design concept and beam scanning performance, an array with 9×7 unit cells operating atKa-band is designed and simulated firstly. 2-D beam scanning within the range of ±30º has been verified. Then, a passive prototype with 9×67 unit cells is designed, fabricated and measured. Experimental results show aperture efficiency of35.1% and illumination efficiency of 43.4%. The developed RA is scalable, and it provides a viable low-cost solution to develop low-profile, high-gain and beam-steering array antennas for satellite applicationsPeer reviewe

Reflectarray antennas for dual polarization and broadband telecom satellite applications

    Get PDF
A reflectarray antenna with improved performance is proposed to operate in dual-polarization and transmit-receive frequencies in Ku-band for broadcast satellite applications. The reflectarray element contains two orthogonal sets of four coplanar parallel dipoles printed on two surfaces, each set combining lateral and broadside coupling. A 40-cm prototype has been designed, manufactured, and tested. The lengths of the coupled dipoles in the reflectarray cells have been optimized to produce a collimated beam in dual polarization in the transmit and receive bands. The measured radiation patterns confirm the high performance of the antenna in terms of bandwidth (27%), low losses, and low levels of cross polarization. Some preliminary simulations at 11.95 GHz for a 1.2-m antenna with South American coverage are presented to show the potential of the proposed antenna for spaceborne antennas in Ku-band
