    Optimal maintenance of multi-component systems: a review

    In this article we give an overview of the literature on multi-component maintenance optimization. We focus on work appearing since the 1991 survey "A survey of maintenance models for multi-unit systems" by Cho and Parlar. This paper builds forth on the review article by Dekker et al. (1996), which focusses on economic dependence, and the survey of maintenance policies by Wang (2002), in which some group maintenance and some opportunistic maintenance policies are considered. Our classification scheme is primarily based on the dependence between components (stochastic, structural or economic). Next, we also classify the papers on the basis of the planning aspect (short-term vs long-term), the grouping of maintenance activities (either grouping preventive or corrective maintenance, or opportunistic grouping) and the optimization approach used (heuristic, policy classes or exact algorithms).     After-sales services optimisation through dynamic opportunistic maintenance: a wind energy case study

    After-sales maintenance services can be a very profitable source of incomes for original equipment manufacturers (OEM) due to the increasing interest of assets’ users on performance-based contracts. However, when it concerns the product value-adding process, OEM have traditionally been more focused on improving their production processes, rather than on complementing their products by offering after-sales services; consequently leading to difficulties in offering them efficiently. Furthermore, both due to the high uncertainty of the assets’ behaviour and the inherent challenges of managing the maintenance process (e.g. maintenance strategy to be followed or resources to be deployed), it is complex to make business out of the provision of after-sales services. With the aim of helping the business and maintenance decision makers at this point, this paper proposes a framework for optimising the incomes of after-sales maintenance services through: 1) implementing advanced multi-objective opportunistic maintenance strategies that sistematically consider the assets’ operational context in order to perform preventive maintenance during most favourable conditions, 2) considering the specific OEMs’ and users’ needs, and 3) assessing both internal and external uncertainties that might condition the after-sales services’ success.     An Integrated Optimization Framework for Multi-Component Predictive Analytics in Wind Farm Operations & Maintenance

    Recent years have seen an unprecedented growth in the use of sensor data to guide wind farm operations and maintenance. Emerging sensor-driven approaches typically focus on optimal maintenance procedures for single turbine systems, or model multiple turbines in wind farms as single component entities. In reality, turbines are composed of multiple components that dynamically interact throughout their lifetime. These interactions are central for realistic assessment and control of turbine failure risks. In this paper, an integrated framework that combines i) real-time degradation models used for predicting remaining life distribution of each component, with ii) mixed integer optimization models and solution algorithms used for identifying optimal wind farm maintenance and operations is proposed. Maintenance decisions identify optimal times to repair every component, which in turn, determine the failure risk of the turbines. More specifically, optimization models that characterize a turbine's failure time as the first time that one of its constituent components fail - a systems reliability concept called competing risk is developed. The resulting turbine failures impact the optimization of wind farm operations and revenue. Extensive experiments conducted for multiple wind farms with 300 wind turbines - 1200 components - showcases the performance of the proposed framework over conventional methods

    Maintenance Strategies Design and Assessment Using a Periodic Complexity Approach

    People become more dependent on various devices, which do deteriorate over time and their operation becomes more complex. This leads to higher unexpected failure chance, which causes inconvenience, cost, time, and even lives. Therefore, an efficient maintenance strategy that reduces complexity should be established to ensure the system performs economically as designed without interruption. In the current research, a comprehensive novel approach is developed for designing and evaluating maintenance strategies that effectively reduce complexity in a cost efficient way with maximum availability and quality. A proper maintenance strategy application needs a rigorous failure definition. A new complexity based mathematical definition of failure is introduced that is able to model all failure types. A complexity-based metric, complication rate , is introduced to measure functionality degradation and gradual failure. Maintenance reduces the system complexity by system resetting via introducing periodicity. A metric for measuring the amount of periodicity introduced by maintenance strategy is developed. Developing efficient maintenance strategies that improve system performance criteria, requires developing the mathematical relationships between maintenance and quality, availability, and cost. The first relation relating the product quality to maintenance policy is developed using the virtual age concept. The aging intensity function is then deployed to develop the relation between maintenance and availability. The relation between maintenance and cost is formulated by investigating the maintenance effect on each cost element. The final step in maintenance policy design is finding the optimum periodicity level. Two approaches are investigated; weighted sum integrated with AHP and a comfort zones approach. Comfort zones is a new developed physical programming based optimization heuristic that captures designer preferences and limitations without substantial efforts in tweaking or calculating weights. A mining truck case study is presented to explain the application of the developed maintenance design approach and compare its results to the traditional reward renewal theory. It is shown that the developed approach is more capable of designing a maintenance policy that reduces complexity and simultaneously improves some other performance measures. This research explains that considering complexity reduction in maintenance policy design improves system functionality, and it can be achieved by simple industrially applicable approach

    Cost optimization of maintenance scheduling for wind turbines with aging components

    A major part of the wind turbine operation cost is resulted from the maintenance of its components. This thesis deals with the theory, algorithms, and applications concerning minimization of the maintenance cost of wind power turbines, using mathematical modelling to find the optimal schedules of preventive maintenance activities for multi-component systems.\ua0 \ua0 The main contributions of this thesis are covered by the four papers appended. The unifying goal of these papers is to produce new optimization models resulting in effective and fast algorithms for preventive maintenance time schedules. The features of the multi-component systems addressed in our project are: aging components, long-term, and short-term planning, planning for a wind power farm, end of the lifetime of the wind farm, maintenance contracts, and condition monitoring data.\ua0 \ua0 For the long-term maintenance planning problem, this thesis contains an optimization framework that recognizes different phases of the wind turbine lifetime. For short-term planning problem, this thesis contains two modeling frameworks, which both focus on the planning of the next preventive maintenance activities. Our virtual experiments show that the developed optimization models adopt realistic assumptions and can be accurately solved in seconds. One of these two frameworks is further extended so that available condition monitoring data can be incorporated for regular updates of the components\u27 hazard functions. In collaboration with the Swedish Wind Power Technology Center at Chalmers and its member companies, we test this method with real-world wind farm data. Our case studies demonstrate that this framework may result in remarkable savings due to the smart scheduling of preventive maintenance activities by monitoring the ages of the components as well as operation data of the wind turbines. \ua0 \ua0 We believe that in the future, the proposed optimization model for short-term planning based on the component age and condition monitoring data can be used as a key module in a maintenance scheduling app

    Optimizing maintenance plans of offshore wind farms by calculating the likelihood of future turbine failures

    Although offshore wind power shows promising energy potentials, high cost of operating and maintaining offshore wind farms concerns investors. Different maintenance strategies are applied by wind farm operators to overcome this drawback. A mixed integer optimization model is developed to find the optimal maintenance plan for an offshore wind farm. The proposed model include probabilistic failure times, multiple components per wind turbine, route decisions and imperfect maintenance. That is, aspects usually studied individually in the literature. Maintenance actions are scheduled based on the calculated likelihood of future turbine failures. Results from numerical experiments show that applying an imperfect preventive maintenance strategy, as opposed to a preventive replacement strategy, is preferable in most scenarios. An additional heuristic algorithm is presented. Close to optimal solutions with optimality gaps between 1% and 3% prove that the heuristic algorithm yields good solutions.Masteroppgave i energiENERGI399MAMN-ENER

    Maintenance Optimization and Inspection Planning of Wind Energy Assets: Models, Methods and Strategies

    Designing cost-effective inspection and maintenance programmes for wind energy farms is a complex task involving a high degree of uncertainty due to diversity of assets and their corresponding damage mechanisms and failure modes, weather-dependent transport conditions, unpredictable spare parts demand, insufficient space or poor accessibility for maintenance and repair, limited availability of resources in terms of equipment and skilled manpower, etc. In recent years, maintenance optimization has attracted the attention of many researchers and practitioners from various sectors of the wind energy industry, including manufacturers, component suppliers, maintenance contractors and others. In this paper, we propose a conceptual classification framework for the available literature on maintenance policy optimization and inspection planning of wind energy systems and structures (turbines, foundations, power cables and electrical substations). The developed framework addresses a wide range of theoretical and practical issues, including the models, methods, and the strategies employed to optimise maintenance decisions and inspection procedures in wind farms. The literature published to date on the subject of this article is critically reviewed and several research gaps are identified. Moreover, the available studies are systematically classified using different criteria and some research directions of potential interest to operational researchers are highlighted
