    This paper proposes a gain-scheduling control design strategy for a class of linear systems with the presence of both input saturation constraints and norm-bounded parametric uncertainty. LMI conditions are derived in order to obtain a gain-scheduled controller that ensures the robust stability and performance of the closed loop system. The main steps to obtain such a controller are given. Differently from other gain-scheduled approaches in the literature, this one focuses on the problem of H∞ loop shaping control design with input saturation nonlinearity and norm-bounded uncertainty to reduce the effect of the disturbance input on the controlled outputs. Here, the design problem has been formulated in the four-block H∞ synthesis framework, in which it is possible to describe the parametric uncertainty and the input saturation nonlinearity as perturbations to normalized coprime factors of the shaped plant. As a result, the shaped plant is represented as a linear parameter-varying (LPV) system while the norm-bounded uncertainty and input saturation are incorporated. This procedure yields a linear parameter-varying structure for the controller that ensures the stability of the polytopic LPV shaped plant from the vertex property. Finally, the effectiveness of the method is illustrated through application to a physical system: a VTOL “vertical taking-off landing” helicopter

    Ce travail concerne le développement de méthodes de commandes avancées pour les suspensions automobiles afin d'améliorer la tenue de route des véhicules et le confort des passagers, tout en respectant les contraintes technologiques liées aux actionneurs de suspension (passivité, non-linéarités, limite structurelle). Dans la 1ère partie, nous proposons deux schémas de commande par approche LPV polytopique (Linéaire à Paramètre Variant) et Stabilisation Forte (Strong Stabilization) avec optimisation par algorithme génétique pour résoudre les conflits confort/tenue de route et confort/débattement de suspension. Dans la 2ème partie, pour résoudre le problème complet de commande de suspensions semi-actives, nous développons d'abord une stratégie générique pour les systèmes LPV généraux soumis à la saturation des actionneurs et à des contraintes d'état. Le problème est étudié sous la forme de résolution d'inégalités linéaires matricielles (LMI) qui permettent de synthétiser un contrôleur LPV et un gain anti wind-up garantissant la stabilité et la performance du système en boucle fermée. Ensuite, cette stratégie est appliquée au cas de la commande des suspensions semi-actives. Les méthodes proposées sont validées par une évaluation basée sur un critère industriel et des simulations effectuées sur un modèle non-linéaire de quart de véhicule.This work concerns the development of advanced control methods for automotive suspensions to improve road holding and passenger comfort, while satisfying the technological constraints related to the suspension actuators (passivity, nonlinearity, structural limit). In the first part, we propose two control schemes by polytopic LPV (Linear Parameter Varying) approach and by Strong Stabilization with genetic algorithm optimization to solve the comfort/handling and comfort/suspension travel conflits. In the second part, to solve the full semi-active suspension problem, we develop first a generic strategy for general LPV systems subject to actuator saturation and state constraints. The problem is studied in the form of resolution matrix of linear inequalities (LMI) that allows synthesizing an LPV controller and an anti-windup gain to ensure the stability and performance of the closed-loop system. Second, the theoretical result is applied to the case of semi-active suspension control.     Controller tuning by means of multi-objective optimization algorithms: a global tuning framework

This approach gives control engineers greater flexibility to select a controller that matches their specifications. Furthermore, for a given controller it is simple to analyze the tradeoff achieved between conflicting objectives. By using the multi-objective design technique it is also possible to perform a global comparison between different control strategies in a simple and robust way. This approach thereby enables an analysis to be made of whether a preference for a certain control technique is justified.     Inclusion of input saturation in the design of dynamically operable plants

    Bibliography: leaves 109-113.Dynamic operability reflects the quality with which a plant can be controlled using feedback, and is a function of both the design of the plant and its associated control system. A plant designed on the basis of steady-state considerations alone could exhibit poor dynamic characteristics, leading to a loss of economic performance and a reduced capacity to effectively handle safety and environmental constraints. This motivates the need for the development of quantitative techniques for dynamic operability assessment, as well as its incorporation into procedures for process plant design. Optimization-based approaches to dynamic operability assessment permit simultaneous consideration of performance-limiting factors of nonminimum phase characteristics, input constraints and model uncertainty, and also provide considerable flexibility in the choice of performance criteria, decision variables and constraints. Recent work has incorporated operability requirements as constraints within a single optimal plant design problem formulation (Mohideen et at., 1997; Bahri et at.,1996). Young and Swartz (1997) considered the rigorous inclusion of input saturation effects in optimizing control. Actuator saturation introduces discontinuities in the system model and, to avoid potential problems using a sequential optimization approach, two alternative formulations were proposed for solving the problem within a simultaneous solution framework. Input saturation discontinuities were handled by the introduction of slack variables and their inclusion in either bilinear or mixed-integer constraints resulting in a nonlinear or mixed-integer linear programming problem respectively. The formulations were applied to a linear system with dead time to find the economically optimal operating point for a controller with fixed structure and tunings when disturbance deviations are taken into account. It was shown that using a strictly linear controller in this case would lead to an overly conservative estimate of the feasible operating range and consequently, a suboptimal operating point

    Commande Robuste et Contraintes d'Optimisation

    This thesis presents an overview of my research activities carried out since my PhD in 2001. In the first section, description of the projects, my different contributions to robust control applied to the spatial field and underwater robotics, are highlighted. My research project for the coming years is then presented; I propose an original and efficient methodology to compute simple control laws by combining \textit{robust control} and \textit{global optimization}. The second part of this thesis is dedicated to the scientific aspects that will help clarify the proposed research project. As a starting point, Youla parametrization is presented as a tool to \textit{render convex} the control problem, and the subsequent work is used as a foundation to establish specifications based on the constraints related to optimization. This theme has served as a driving thread in illustrating how industrial requirements could lead to a control problem. Parallel to this, the question also arose as to the practical realization of results from these methodologies, that is, how they might be implemented in an embedded system. Ariane 5 launcher control is taken as an example for research on the structured control and validation.Ce mémoire présente un panorama des activités de recherche menées depuis ma thèse de doctorat en 2001. Dans une première partie, à travers la description des projets, sont mises en avant les différentes contributions à la commande robuste appliquée au monde spatial et au monde de la robotique sous-marine. On montre alors comment s'est construit le projet de recherche proposé pour les années à venir. Il s'agit de proposer une méthodologie originale et efficace pour régler des lois de commande simple à implémenter en combinant \textit{commande robuste} et \textit{optimisation globale}. La seconde partie de ce mémoire est consacrée à quelques aspects scientifiques qui aident à comprendre le projet de recherche proposé. On y trouve comme point de départ la paramétrisation de Youla en tant qu'outil pour \textit{convexifier} le problème de commande et les travaux qui en ont découlés pour traduire un cahier des charges en terme de contrainte dans un problème d'optimisation. Cette thématique a été un fil conducteur important pour faire le lien avec la demande industrielle de savoir comment les exigences étaient traduites dans le problème de commande. En parallèle, s'est posée la question de la réalisation pratique des résultats issues de ces méthodologies, c'est-à-dire leur implémentation sur un système embarqué. On prendra comme exemple les activités de recherche sur la structuration de correcteur et leur qualification pour les lois de pilotage des lanceurs Ariane 5

    A generalized framework for robust nonlinear compensation (application to an atmospheric reentry control problem)

    Ce travail de thèse est consacré à l'extension de l'Inversion Dynamique non-linéaire (NDI-Nonlinear Dynamic Inversion) pour un ensemble plus grand de systèmes non-linéaires, tout en garantissant des conditions de stabilité suffisantes. La NDI a été étudiée dans le cas de diverses applications, y compris en aéronautique et en aérospatiale. Elle permet de calculer des lois de contrôle capables de linéariser et de découpler un modèle non-linéaire à tout point de fonctionnement de son enveloppe d'état. Cependant cette méthode est intrinsèquement non-robuste aux erreurs de modélisation et aux saturations en entrée. En outre, dans un contexte non-linéaire, l'obtention d'une garantie quantifiable du domaine de stabilité atteint reste à l'heure actuelle complexe. Contrairement aux approches classiques de la NDI, notre méthodologie peut être considérée comme un cadre de compensation non-linéaire généralisé qui permet d'intégrer les incertitudes et les saturations en entrée dans le processus de conception. En utilisant des stratégies de contrôle antiwindup, la loi de pilotage peut être calculée grâce à un simple processus en deux phases. Dans ce cadre de travail généralisé des transformations linéaires fractionnaires (LFT - Linear Fractional Transformations) de la boucle fermée non-linéaire peuvent être facilement déduites pour l'analyse de la stabilité robuste en utilisant des outils standards pour de systèmes linéaires. La méthode proposée est testée pour le pilotage d'un véhicule de rentrée atmosphérique de type aile delta lors de ses phases hypersonique, transsonique et subsonique. Pour cette thèse, un simulateur du vol incluant divers facteurs externes ainsi que des erreurs de modélisation a été développé dans Simulink.This thesis work is devoted to extending Nonlinear Dynamic Inversion (NDI) for a large scale of nonlinear systems while guaranteeing sufficient stability conditions. NDI has been studied in a wide range of applications, including aeronautics and aerospace. It allows to compute nonlinear control laws able to decouple and linearize a model at any operating point of its state envelope. However, this method is inherently non-robust to modelling errors and input saturations. Moreover, obtaining a quantifiable guarantee of the attained stability domain in a nonlinear control context is not a very straightforward task. Unlike standard NDI approaches, our methodology can be viewed as a generalized nonlinear compensation framework which allows to incorporate uncertainties and input saturations in the design process. Paralleling anti-windup strategies, the controller can be computed through a single multichannel optimization problem or through a simple two-step process. Within this framework, linear fractional transformations of the nonlinear closed-loop can be easily derived for robust stability analysis using standard tools for linear systems. The proposed method is tested for the flight control of a delta wing type reentry vehicle at hypersonic, transonic and subsonic phases of the atmospheric reentry.     Gradient projection anti-windup scheme

It leads to controller windup, which degrades/limits the system's closed-loop performance, and may cause catastrophic failures if it induces instability. Anti-windup compensation is one of two main approaches to mitigate the effects of windup, and is conceptually and practically attractive. For the idealized case of constrained linear time invariant (LTI) plants driven by LTI controllers, numerous anti-windup schemes exist. However, most practical control systems are inherently nonlinear, and anti-windup compensation for nonlinear systems remains largely an open problem. To this end, we propose the gradient projection anti-windup (GPAW) scheme, which is an extension of the conditional integration method to multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) nonlinear systems, using Rosen's gradient projection method for nonlinear programming. It achieves controller state-output consistency by projecting the controller state onto the unsaturated region induced by the control saturation constraints. The GPAW-compensated controller is a hybrid controller defined by the online solution to either a combinatorial optimization subproblem, a convex quadratic program, or a projection onto a convex polyhedral cone problem. We show that the GPAW-compensated system is obtained by modifying the uncompensated system with a passive operator. Qualitative weaknesses of some existing anti-windup results are established, which motivated a new paradigm to address the anti-windup problem. It is shown that for a constrained first order LTI plant driven by a first order LTI controller, GPAW compensation can only maintain/enlarge its region of attraction (ROA). In this new paradigm, we derived some ROA comparison and stability results for MIMO nonlinear as well as MIMO LTI systems. The thesis is not that the GPAW scheme solves a centuries-old open problem of immense practical importance, but rather, that it provides a potential path to a solution.
