    Composing games into complex institutions

    Game theory is used by all behavioral sciences, but its development has long centered around tools for relatively simple games and toy systems, such as the economic interpretation of equilibrium outcomes. Our contribution, compositional game theory, permits another approach of equally general appeal: the high-level design of large games for expressing complex architectures and representing real-world institutions faithfully. Compositional game theory, grounded in the mathematics underlying programming languages, and introduced here as a general computational framework, increases the parsimony of game representations with abstraction and modularity, accelerates search and design, and helps theorists across disciplines express real-world institutional complexity in well-defined ways. Relative to existing approaches in game theory, compositional game theory is especially promising for solving game systems with long-range dependencies, for comparing large numbers of structurally related games, and for nesting games into the larger logical or strategic flows typical of real world policy or institutional systems.Comment: ~4000 words, 6 figure

    Child Obesity and Nutrition Promotion Intervention

    Childhood obesity continues to be a global problem, with several regions showing increasing rates and others having one in every three children overweight despite an apparent halt or downward trend. Children are exposed to nutritional, social, and obesogenic environmental risks from different settings, and this affects their lifelong health. There is a consensus that high-quality multifaceted smart and cost-effective interventions enable children to grow with a healthy set of habits that have lifelong benefits to their wellbeing. The literature has shown that dietary approaches play key roles in improving childrenā€™s health, not only on a nutritional level but also in diet quality and patterns. An association between the nutritional strategy and other lifestyle components promotes a more comprehensive approach and should be envisioned in intervention studies. This Special Issue entitled ā€œChild Obesity and Nutrition Promotion Interventionā€ combines original research manuscripts or reviews of the scientific literature concerning classic or innovative approaches to tackle this public health issue. It presents several nutritional interventions alongside lifestyle health factors, and outcome indicators of effectiveness and sustainability from traditional to ground-breaking methods to exploit both qualitative and quantitative approaches in tackling child obesity

    TOWARDS AN UNDERSTANDING OF EFFORTFUL FUNDRAISING EXPERIENCES: USING INTERPRETATIVE PHENOMENOLOGICAL ANALYSIS IN FUNDRAISING RESEARCH

    Physical-activity oriented community fundraising has experienced an exponential growth in popularity over the past 15 years. The aim of this study was to explore the value of effortful fundraising experiences, from the point of view of participants, and explore the impact that these experiences have on peopleā€™s lives. This study used an IPA approach to interview 23 individuals, recognising the role of participants as proxy (nonprofessional) fundraisers for charitable organisations, and the unique organisation donor dynamic that this creates. It also bought together relevant psychological theory related to physical activity fundraising experiences (through a narrative literature review) and used primary interview data to substantiate these. Effortful fundraising experiences are examined in detail to understand their significance to participants, and how such experiences influence their connection with a charity or cause. This was done with an idiographic focus at first, before examining convergences and divergences across the sample. This study found that effortful fundraising experiences can have a profound positive impact upon community fundraisers in both the short and the long term. Additionally, it found that these experiences can be opportunities for charitable organisations to create lasting meaningful relationships with participants, and foster mutually beneficial lifetime relationships with them. Further research is needed to test specific psychological theory in this context, including self-esteem theory, self determination theory, and the martyrdom effect (among others)

    Analyzing Usage Conflict Situations in Localized Spectrum Sharing Scenarios: An Agent-Based Modeling and Machine Learning Approach

    As spectrum sharing matures, different approaches have been proposed for a more efficient allocation, assignment, and usage of spectrum resources. These approaches include cognitive radios, multi-level user definitions, radio environment maps, among others. However, spectrum usage conflicts (e.g., "harmful" interference) remain a common challenge in spectrum sharing schemes. In particular, in conflict situations where it is necessary to take actions to ensure the sound operations of sharing agreements. A typical example of a usage conflict is where incumbents' tolerable levels of interference (i.e., interference thresholds) are surpassed. In this work, we present a new method to examine and study spectrum usage conflicts. A fundamental goal of this project is to capture local resource usage patterns to provide more realistic estimates of interference. For this purpose, we have defined two spectrum and network-specific characteristics that directly impact the local interference assessment: resource access strategy and governance framework. Thus, we are able to test the viability in spectrum sharing situations of distributed or decentralized governance systems, including polycentric and self-governance. In addition, we are able to design, model, and test a multi-tier spectrum sharing scheme that provides stakeholders with more flexible resource access opportunities. To perform this dynamic and localized study of spectrum usage and conflicts, we rely on Agent-Based Modeling (ABM) as our main analysis instrument. A crucial component for capturing local resource usage patterns is to provide agents with local information about their spectrum situation. Thus, the environment of the models presented in this dissertation are given by the REM's Interference Cartography (IC) map. Additionally, the agents' definitions and actions are the results of the interaction of the technical aspects of resource access and management, stakeholder interactions, and the underlying usage patterns as defined in the Common Pool Resource (CPR) literature. Finally, to capture local resource usage patterns and, consequently, provide more realistic estimates of conflict situations, we enhance the classical rule-based ABM approach by using Machine Learning (ML) techniques. Via ML algorithms, we refine the internal models of agents in an ABM. Thus, the agents' internal models allow them to choose more suitable responses to changes in the environment

Traldi BECOMEBECOME A Transdisciplinary Methodology Based on Information about the Observer The present research dissertation has been developed with the intention to provide practical strategies and discover new intellectual operations which can be used to generate Transdisciplinary insight. For this reason, this thesis creates access to new knowledge at different scales. Firstly, as it pertains to the scale of new knowledge generated by those who attend Becomebecome events. The open-source nature of the Becomebecome methodology makes it possible for participants in Becomebecome workshops, training programmes and residencies to generate new insight about the specific project they are working on, which then reinforce and expand the foundational principles of the theoretical background. Secondly, as it pertains to the scale of the Becomebecome framework, which remains independent of location and moment in time. The method proposed to access Transdisciplinary knowledge constitutes new knowledge in itself because the sequence of activities, described as physical and mental procedures and listed as essential criteria, have never been found organised 6 in such a specific order before. It is indeed the order in time, i.e. the sequence of the ideas and activities proposed, which allows one to transform Disciplinary knowledge via a new Transdisciplinary frame of reference. Lastly, new knowledge about Transdisciplinarity as a field of study is created as a consequence of the heretofore listed two processes. The first part of the thesis is designated ā€˜Becomebecome Theoryā€™ and focuses on the theoretical background and the intellectual operations necessary to support the creation of new Transdisciplinary knowledge. The second part of the thesis is designated ā€˜Becomebecome Practiceā€™ and provides practical examples of the application of such operations. Crucially, the theoretical model described as the foundation for the Becomebecome methodology (Becomebecome Theory) is process-based and constantly checked against the insight generated through Becomebecome Practice. To this effect, ā€˜information about the observerā€™ is proposed as a key notion which binds together Transdisciplinary resources from several studies in the hard sciences and humanities. It is a concept that enables understanding about why and how information that is generated through Becomebecome Practice is considered of paramount importance for establishing the reference parameters necessary to access Transdisciplinary insight which is meaningful to a specific project, a specific person, or a specific moment in time
