    Unattended network operations technology assessment study. Technical support for defining advanced satellite systems concepts

    The results are summarized of an unattended network operations technology assessment study for the Space Exploration Initiative (SEI). The scope of the work included: (1) identified possible enhancements due to the proposed Mars communications network; (2) identified network operations on Mars; (3) performed a technology assessment of possible supporting technologies based on current and future approaches to network operations; and (4) developed a plan for the testing and development of these technologies. The most important results obtained are as follows: (1) addition of a third Mars Relay Satellite (MRS) and MRS cross link capabilities will enhance the network's fault tolerance capabilities through improved connectivity; (2) network functions can be divided into the six basic ISO network functional groups; (3) distributed artificial intelligence technologies will augment more traditional network management technologies to form the technological infrastructure of a virtually unattended network; and (4) a great effort is required to bring the current network technology levels for manned space communications up to the level needed for an automated fault tolerance Mars communications network

    Simulation and optimization model for the construction of electrical substations

    One of the most complex construction projects is electrical substations. An electrical substation is an auxiliary station of an electricity generation, transmission and distribution system where voltage is transformed from high to low or the reverse using transformers. Construction of electrical substation includes civil works and electromechanical works. The scope of civil works includes construction of several buildings/components divided into parallel and overlapped working phases that require variety of resources and are generally quite costly and consume a considerable amount of time. Therefore, construction of substations faces complicated time-cost-resource optimization problems. On another hand, the construction industry is turning out to be progressively competitive throughout the years, whereby the need to persistently discover approaches to enhance construction performance. To address the previously stated afflictions, this dissertation makes the underlying strides and introduces a simulation and optimization model for the execution processes of civil works for an electrical substation based on database excel file for input data entry. The input data include bill of quantities, maximum available resources, production rates, unit cost of resources and indirect cost. The model is built on Anylogic software using discrete event simulation method. The model is divided into three zones working in parallel to each other. Each zone includes a group of buildings related to the same construction area. Each zone-model describes the execution process schedule for each building in the zone, the time consumed, percentage of utilization of equipment and manpower crews, amount of materials consumed and total direct and indirect cost. The model is then optimized to mainly minimize the project duration using parameter variation experiment and genetic algorithm java code implemented using Anylogic platform. The model used allocated resource parameters as decision variables and available resources as constraints. The model is verified on real case studies in Egypt and sensitivity analysis studies are incorporated. The model is also validated using a real case study and proves its efficiency by attaining a reduction in model time units between simulation and optimization experiments of 10.25% and reduction in total cost of 4.7%. Also, by comparing the optimization results by the actual data of the case study, the model attains a reduction in time and cost by 13.6% and 6.3% respectively. An analysis to determine the effect of each resource on reduction in cost is also presented

    Space Station Freedom automation and robotics: An assessment of the potential for increased productivity

    This report presents the results of a study performed in support of the Space Station Freedom Advanced Development Program, under the sponsorship of the Space Station Engineering (Code MT), Office of Space Flight. The study consisted of the collection, compilation, and analysis of lessons learned, crew time requirements, and other factors influencing the application of advanced automation and robotics, with emphasis on potential improvements in productivity. The lessons learned data collected were based primarily on Skylab, Spacelab, and other Space Shuttle experiences, consisting principally of interviews with current and former crew members and other NASA personnel with relevant experience. The objectives of this report are to present a summary of this data and its analysis, and to present conclusions regarding promising areas for the application of advanced automation and robotics technology to the Space Station Freedom and the potential benefits in terms of increased productivity. In this study, primary emphasis was placed on advanced automation technology because of its fairly extensive utilization within private industry including the aerospace sector. In contrast, other than the Remote Manipulator System (RMS), there has been relatively limited experience with advanced robotics technology applicable to the Space Station. This report should be used as a guide and is not intended to be used as a substitute for official Astronaut Office crew positions on specific issues

    KSC is planning a Space Station Ground Data Management System (GDMS) for support of functional interface verification, integration and test of Space Station modules and elements. This computer system, planned for initial operational support in 1992, currently is entering a definition and prototyping stage. This paper provides an overview of the GDMS system concept. It synqpsizes system functional capabilities, and discusses software and hardware architectural approaches currently under evaluation. It identifies programmatic constraints and their influence upon the concept, as well as specific technical issues planned for study or evaluation via prototyping

    A graph based process model measurement framework using scheduling theory

    Software development processes, as a means of ensuring software quality and productivity, have been widely accepted within the software development community; software process modeling, on the other hand, continues to be a subject of interest in the research community. Even with organizations that have achieved higher SEI maturity levels, processes are by and large described in documents and reinforced as guidelines or laws governing software development activities. The lack of industry-wide adaptation of software process modeling as part of development activities can be attributed to two major reasons: lack of forecast power in the (software) process modeling and lack of integration mechanism for the described process to seamlessly interact with daily development activities. This dissertation describes a research through which a framework has been established where processes can be manipulated, measured, and dynamically modified by interacting with project management techniques and activities in an integrated process modeling environment, thus closing the gap between process modeling and software development. In this research, processes are described using directed graphs, similar to the techniques with CPM. This way, the graphs can be manipulated visually while the properties of the graphs-can be used to check their validity. The partial ordering and the precedence relationship of the tasks in the graphs are similar to the one studied in other researches [Delcambre94] [Mills96]. Measurements of the effectiveness of the processes are added in this research. These measurements provide bases for the judgment when manipulating the graphs to produce or modify a process. Software development can be considered as activities related to three sets: a set of tasks (τ), a set of resources (ρ), and a set of constraints (y). The process, P, is then a function of all the sets interacting with each other: P = {τ, ρ, y). The interactions of these sets can be described in terms of different machine models using scheduling theory. While trying to produce an optimal solution satisfying a set of prescribed conditions using the analytical method would lead to a practically non-feasible formulation, many heuristic algorithms in scheduling theory combined with manual manipulation of the tasks can help to produce a reasonable good process, the effectiveness of which is reflected through a set of measurement criteria, in particular, the make-span, the float, and the bottlenecks. Through an integrated process modeling environment, these measurements can be obtained in real time, thus providing a feedback loop during the process execution. This feedback loop is essential for risk management and control
