    On Mechanism, Process and Polity: An Agent-Based Modeling and Simulation Approach

    The present approach provides a theoretical account of political culture-based modeling of political change phenomena. Our approach is an agent-based simulation model inspired by a social-psychological account of the relation between the individual agents (citizens) and the polity. It includes political culture as a fundamental modeling dimension. On this background, we reconsider the operational definitions of agent, mechanism, process, and polity so as to specify the role they play in the modeling of political change phenomena. We evaluate our previous experimental simulation experience in corruption emergence and political attitude change. The paper approaches the artificial polity as a political culture-based model of a body politic. It involves political culture concepts to account for the complexity of domestic political phenomena, going from political attitude change at the individual level up to major political change at the societal level. Architecture, structure, unit of interaction, generative mechanisms and processes are described. Both conceptual and experimental issues are described so as to highlight the differences between the simulation models of society and polity

    Based on formal-theoretical principles about the \ud sign processes involved, we have built synthetic experiments \ud to investigate the emergence of communication based on \ud symbols and indexes in a distributed system of sign users, \ud following theoretical constraints from C.S.Peirce theory of \ud signs, following a Synthetic Semiotics approach. In this paper, we summarize these computational experiments and results regarding associative learning processes of symbolic sign modality and cognitive conditions in an evolutionary process for the emergence of either symbol-based or index-based communication

    The emergence of cities: complexity and urban dynamics

    This paper presents an approach to urban dynamics that generalizes the traditionalrank-size model first popularized by Zipf (1949). It argues that we need to define the rate atwhich new cities emerge and old cities disappear within the apparent macro stability posed byZipf?s Law. We illustrate this with a reworking and extension of Zipf?s analysis of the USurban system, taking his analysis from 1790 to 1930 forward to the year 2000. In doing so, weintroduce a variety of devices to detect urban change based on traces through the rank-sizephase space, trajectories using a rank-time clock, and the definition of urban half-lives. We setthis analysis within the wider context of stochastic simulation that is currently dominatingdiscussion of scaling processes such as these

    p. 938-948Tectonics is a seminal concept that defines the nature of the relationship between architecture and its structural properties. The changing definition of the symbiotic relationship between structural engineering and architectural design may be considered one of the formative influences on the conceptual evolution of tectonics in different historical periods. Recent developments in the field of morphogenesis, digital media, theories techniques and methods of digital design have contributed a new models of integration between structure, material and form in digital tectonics. The objective of this paper is to propose and define tectonics as a model of morphogenetic process. The paper identifies and presents the manner in which theory and emerging concepts of morphogenesis as well as digital models of design are contributing to this new model. The paper first analyzes the historical evolution of tectonics as a concept and characterizes the emergence of theoretical framework reflected in concepts and terms related to morphogenesis.Oxman, R.
