    Full- & Reduced-Order State-Space Modeling of Wind Turbine Systems with Permanent-Magnet Synchronous Generator

    Wind energy is an integral part of nowadays energy supply and one of the fastest growing sources of electricity in the world today. Accurate models for wind energy conversion systems (WECSs) are of key interest for the analysis and control design of present and future energy systems. Existing control-oriented WECSs models are subject to unstructured simplifications, which have not been discussed in literature so far. Thus, this technical note presents are thorough derivation of a physical state-space model for permanent magnet synchronous generator WECSs. The physical model considers all dynamic effects that significantly influence the system's power output, including the switching of the power electronics. Alternatively, the model is formulated in the (a,b,c)(a,b,c)- and (d,q)(d,q)-reference frame. Secondly, a complete control and operation management system for the wind regimes II and III and the transition between the regimes is presented. The control takes practical effects such as input saturation and integral windup into account. Thirdly, by a structured model reduction procedure, two state-space models of WECS with reduced complexity are derived: a non-switching model and a non-switching reduced-order model. The validity of the models is illustrated and compared through a numerical simulation study.Comment: 23 pages, 11 figure

    Neural-Network Vector Controller for Permanent-Magnet Synchronous Motor Drives: Simulated and Hardware-Validated Results

    This paper focuses on current control in a permanentmagnet synchronous motor (PMSM). The paper has two main objectives: The first objective is to develop a neural-network (NN) vector controller to overcome the decoupling inaccuracy problem associated with conventional PI-based vector-control methods. The NN is developed using the full dynamic equation of a PMSM, and trained to implement optimal control based on approximate dynamic programming. The second objective is to evaluate the robust and adaptive performance of the NN controller against that of the conventional standard vector controller under motor parameter variation and dynamic control conditions by (a) simulating the behavior of a PMSM typically used in realistic electric vehicle applications and (b) building an experimental system for hardware validation as well as combined hardware and simulation evaluation. The results demonstrate that the NN controller outperforms conventional vector controllers in both simulation and hardware implementation

    Influence of skew and cross-coupling on flux-weakening performance of permanent-magnet brushless AC machines

    A method is proposed for predicting the flux-weakening performance of permanent-magnet (PM) brushless ac machines accounting for skew and d-q axis cross-coupling. The method is based on a d-q-axis flux-linkage model, a hybrid 2-D finite-element (FE)-analytical method being used to predict the d- and q-axis inductances. However, it only requires 2-D FE analysis of the magnetic field distribution over a cross section of the machine. The developed method is used to predict the torque-speed characteristic of an interior PM brushless ac machine with one stator slot-pitch skew. This is compared with predictions from a direct FE analysis of the machine and validated by measurements

    Model Based, Direct Flux Vector Control of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor Drives

    This paper proposes a direct flux vector control strategy with no need for regulators tuning, suitable for permanent-magnet (PM) synchronous machine drives. The controller operates in stator flux coordinates and calculates the inverter reference voltages in a model-based fashion, taking advantage of a novel equation for the explicit evaluation of the torque angle error. The inverter current and voltage limits are exploited in a parameter-independent way. The method segregates the machine parameters into a single block, to make it very easy to switch from one machine to another. Experimental results are reported for a PM-assisted synchronous reluctance motor drive example, characterized by significant saturation and cross-saturation. State-of-the-art control techniques such as current vector control and non-model-based direct flux vector control are also considered, for the sake of comparison, in simulations and experiments

    Performance degradation of surface PMSMs with demagnetization defect under predictive current control

    To control the current of a surface mounted permanent magnet synchronous machine fed by a two-level voltage source inverter, a large variety of control algorithms exists. Each of these controllers performs differently concerning dynamic performance and control- and voltage quality, but also concerning sensitivity to demagnetization faults. Therefore, this paper investigates the performance degradation of three advanced predictive controllers under a partial demagnetization fault. The three predictive controllers are: finite-set model based predictive control, deadbeat control, and a combination of both previous algorithms. To achieve this goal, the three predictive controllers are first compared under healthy conditions, and afterwards under a partial demagnetization fault. A PI controller is added to the comparison in order to provide a model-independent benchmark. Key performance indicators, obtained from both simulations and experimental results on a 4 kW axial flux permanent magnet synchronous machine with yokeless and segmented armature topology, are introduced to enable a quantification of the performance degradation of the controllers under a demagnetization fault. A general conclusion is that the deadbeat controller shows superior control quality, even under partial demagnetization

    An improved two-vector model predictive torque control based on RMS duty ratio optimization for pmsm

    This paper proposes an improved two-vector model-predictive torque control (MPTC) strategy to reduce the average torque ripple and improve the flux tracking performance. When determining the duty ratio of vector combination, this method aims at restricting the root mean square (RMS) error of both torque and flux during the whole control period. Every vector combination and corresponding time duration are evaluated in the cost function, which leads to global restriction of torque ripple and flux ripple. In order to avoid increasing switching frequency and computational burden, a restriction is added on the second vector. The three candidates of the second vector are the two adjacent vectors of the first one and zero vector. Simulation results are provided to show the effectiveness of the proposed strategy

    Impact of PWM strategies on RMS current of the DC-link Voltage Capacitor of a dual-three phase drive

    The major drawback of usual dual three-phase AC machines, when supplied by a Voltage Source Inverter (VSI), is the occurrence of extra harmonic currents which circulate in the stator windings causing additional losses and constraints on the power component. This paper compares dedicated Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) strategies used for controlling a dual three phase Permanent Magnet Synchronous machine supplied by a six-leg VSI. Since the application is intended for low-voltage (48V) mild-hybrid automotive traction, an additional major constraint arises: the compactness of the drive related to the size of the DC-bus capacitor. Thus, the PWM strategy must be chosen by taking into consideration its impact on both, the motor and the RMS value of DC-bus current

    Model predictive control of electromagnetic torque in permanent magnet synchronous machines

The aims of the proposed control method are flux and torque ripples reduction. The performances of the proposed model predictive control method and conventional direct torque control (DTC) are comparatively studied in both simulation and experimental tests. In recent years, various variable speed drive strategies and structures for PMSMs have been widely investigated and reported. Among these control strategies, the six-step control, field oriented control (FOC) and DTC are the most popular ones. Among them, the conventional DTC, which selects the desired voltage vector based on hysteresis comparators and switching table, features a fast dynamic response and very simple structure. The major demerits of DTC are large torque and flux ripples, variable switching frequency, and acoustic noises. Recently, the model based predictive control (MPC) was introduced to overcome these problems. However, the improvement was limited for the purposes of torque and flux ripple reduction and the MPC still suffered from variable switching frequency. The conventional DTC and MPC are similar in that they both select only one voltage vector per sampling period. This may result in overregulation, which is the key issue for torque and flux ripples and excessive acoustic noise. In this thesis, an improved MPC method with duty ratio optimization was proposed for PMSMs. The proposed method features low torque and flux ripples and relatively stable switching frequency. It is of most benefit when the drive system is working at a low sampling frequency because in the low frequency range, the proposed MPC drive system can achieve much lower torque and flux ripples than the original MPC and DTC, which is a very desirable feature for high power applications (e.g. electric vehicles). Finally, the numerical simulation and experimental test results of the conventional DTC, MPC, and improved MPC were presented to verify its effectiveness
