    Multilevel Converters: An Enabling Technology for High-Power Applications

    | Multilevel converters are considered today as the state-of-the-art power-conversion systems for high-power and power-quality demanding applications. This paper presents a tutorial on this technology, covering the operating principle and the different power circuit topologies, modulation methods, technical issues and industry applications. Special attention is given to established technology already found in industry with more in-depth and self-contained information, while recent advances and state-of-the-art contributions are addressed with useful references.     Multiple Objective Co-Optimization of Switched Reluctance Machine Design and Control

    This dissertation includes a review of various motor types, a motivation for selecting the switched reluctance motor (SRM) as a focus of this work, a review of SRM design and control optimization methods in literature, a proposed co-optimization approach, and empirical evaluations to validate the models and proposed co-optimization methods. The switched reluctance motor (SRM) was chosen as a focus of research based on its low cost, easy manufacturability, moderate performance and efficiency, and its potential for improvement through advanced design and control optimization. After a review of SRM design and control optimization methods in the literature, it was found that co-optimization of both SRM design and controls is not common, and key areas for improvement in methods for optimizing SRM design and control were identified. Among many things, this includes the need for computationally efficient transient models with the accuracy of FEA simulations and the need for co-optimization of both machine geometry and control methods throughout the entire operation range with multiple objectives such as torque ripple, efficiency, etc. A modeling and optimization framework with multiple stages is proposed that includes robust transient simulators that use mappings from FEA in order to optimize SRM geometry, windings, and control conditions throughout the entire operation region with multiple objectives. These unique methods include the use of particle swarm optimization to determine current profiles for low to moderate speeds and other optimization methods to determine optimal control conditions throughout the entire operation range with consideration of various characteristics and boundary conditions such as voltage and current constraints. This multi-stage optimization process includes down-selections in two previous stages based on performance and operational characteristics at zero and maximum speed. Co-optimization of SRM design and control conditions is demonstrated as a final design is selected based on a fitness function evaluating various operational characteristics including torque ripple and efficiency throughout the torque-speed operation range. The final design was scaled, fabricated, and tested to demonstrate the viability of the proposed framework and co-optimization method. Accuracy of the models was confirmed by comparing simulated and empirical results. Test results from operation at various torques and speeds demonstrates the effectiveness of the optimization approach throughout the entire operating range. Furthermore, test results confirm the feasibility of the proposed torque ripple minimization and efficiency maximization control schemes. A key benefit of the overall proposed approach is that a wide range of machine design parameters and control conditions can be swept, and based on the needs of an application, the designer can select the appropriate geometry, winding, and control approach based on various performance functions that consider torque ripple, efficiency, and other metrics

    On-line Condition Monitoring, Fault Detection and Diagnosis in Electrical Machines and Power Electronic Converters

    The objective of this PhD research is to develop robust, and non-intrusive condition monitoring methods for induction motors fed by closed-loop inverters. The flexible energy forms synthesized by these connected power electronic converters greatly enhance the performance and expand the operating region of induction motors. They also significantly alter the fault behavior of these electric machines and complicate the fault detection and protection. The current state of the art in condition monitoring of power-converter-fed electric machines is underdeveloped as compared to the maturing condition monitoring techniques for grid-connected electric machines. This dissertation first investigates the stator turn-to-turn fault modelling for induction motors (IM) fed by a grid directly. A novel and more meaningful model of the motor itself was developed and a comprehensive study of the closed-loop inverter drives was conducted. A direct torque control (DTC) method was selected for controlling IM’s electromagnetic torque and stator flux-linkage amplitude in industrial applications. Additionally, a new driver based on DTC rules, predictive control theory and fuzzy logic inference system for the IM was developed. This novel controller improves the performance of the torque control on the IM as it reduces most of the disadvantages of the classical and predictive DTC drivers. An analytical investigation of the impacts of the stator inter-turn short-circuit of the machine in the controller and its reaction was performed. This research sets a based knowledge and clear foundations of the events happening inside the IM and internally in the DTC when the machine is damaged by a turn fault in the stator. This dissertation also develops a technique for the health monitoring of the induction machine under stator turn failure. The developed technique was based on the monitoring of the off-diagonal term of the sequence component impedance matrix. Its advantages are that it is independent of the IM parameters, it is immune to the sensors’ errors, it requires a small learning stage, compared with NN, and it is not intrusive, robust and online. The research developed in this dissertation represents a significant advance that can be utilized in fault detection and condition monitoring in industrial applications, transportation electrification as well as the utilization of renewable energy microgrids. To conclude, this PhD research focuses on the development of condition monitoring techniques, modelling, and insightful analyses of a specific type of electric machine system. The fundamental ideas behind the proposed condition monitoring technique, model and analysis are quite universal and appeals to a much wider variety of electric machines connected to power electronic converters or drivers. To sum up, this PhD research has a broad beneficial impact on a wide spectrum of power-converter-fed electric machines and is thus of practical importance

    A DESIGNED METHOD FOR 48-PULSE DIODE RECTIFIER WITH COUPLED THREE PHASE REACTOR

    This paper presents a designed methodology for power electronics, which converts AC into DC voltage with a system of three-phase coupled reactors which secures  consumption of the current. In order to reduce to ripples ,here pure inductor is used from the supply itself. Here eight diode bridge rectifier is also used to get 48 pulses then it will apply to the DC load.This work consists of simulation result, designed topology of a 2-kVA model of 48-pulse converter system. While converting 24 pulse converter to 48 pulse converter the power quality problems like harmonics and Total Harmonic distortion is greatly reduced. The main advantage of this converters is to reduce the consumption of the deformation power.Here  48 pulse diode rectifier with couples three phase reactor is simulated using MATLAB/SIMULINK software

    Analysis of the Harmonic Performance of Power Converters and Electrical Drives

    Power converters have progressively become the most efficient and attractive solution in recent decades in many industrial sectors, ranging from electric mobility, aerospace applications to attain better electric aircraft concepts, vast renewable energy resource integration in the transmission and distribution grid, the design of smart and efficient energy management systems, the usage of energy storage systems, and the achievement of smart grid paradigm development, among others.In order to achieve efficient solutions in this wide energy scenario, over the past few decades, considerable attention has been paid by the academia and industry in order to develop new methods to achieve power systems with maximum harmonic performance aiming for two main targets. On the one hand, the high-performance harmonic performance of power systems would lead to improvements in their power density, size and weight. This becomes critical in applications such as aerospace or electric mobility, where the power converters are on-board systems. On the other hand, current standards are becoming more and more strict in order to reduce the EMI and EMC noise, as well as meeting minimum power quality requirements (i.e., grid code standards for grid-tied power systems)

    Converter fault diagnosis and post-fault operation of a doubly-fed induction generator for a wind turbine

    Wind energy has become one of the most important alternative energy resources because of the global warming crisis. Wind turbines are often erected off-shore because of favourable wind conditions, requiring lower towers than on-shore. The doubly-fed induction generator is one of the most widely used generators with wind turbines. In such a wind turbine the power converters are less robust than the generator and other mechanical parts. If any switch failure occurs in the converters, the wind turbine may be seriously damaged and have to stop. Therefore, converter health monitoring and fault diagnosis are important to improve system reliability. Moreover, to avoid shutting down the wind turbine, converter fault diagnosis may permit a change in control strategy and/or reconfigure the power converters to permit post-fault operation. This research focuses on switch fault diagnosis and post-fault operation for the converters of the doubly-fed induction generator. The effects of an open-switch fault and a short-circuit switch fault are analysed. Several existing open-switch fault diagnosis methods are examined but are found to be unsuitable for the doubly-fed induction generator. The causes of false alarms with these methods are investigated. A proposed diagnosis method, with false alarm suppression, has the fault detection capability equivalent to the best of the existing methods, but improves system reliability. After any open-switch fault is detected, reconfiguration to a four-switch topology is activated to avoid shutting down the system. Short-circuit switch faults are also investigated. Possible methods to deal with this fault are discussed and demonstrated in simulation.
