    Sustainable economic development : concept, principles and management from Islamic perspective

    The basic concern of development in Islamic economic system is on human welfare. This is in line with the very basic objective of Islamic jurisprudence (Shari’ah ) which puts important to the welfare of the people and their relief from hardship. Economic development should be consistent with this central objective of shari`ah. The center for development process in Islam relies on man as an economic agent. It is man to be educated on the entire development process by integrating sosial development, economic development and environmental conservation and protection. This paper attempts to explain the concept, principles and management of sustainable economic development from Islamic perspective. The paper would start by defining the concept of sustainable economic development and development goals. Next, the Islamic principles for sustainable economic development would be discussed, followed by the discussion on the management of sustainable economic development from Islamic perspective. In conclusion, the paper strongly suggests the economic development process to fully adhere to the Islamic principles as the key for sustainable development which covers both the material and non-material aspects of life.     Synthesis and characterization of ultra violet curable renewable polymer graphite composites

    This thesis aims is to evaluate the synthesis and characterization of ultra violet (UV) curable renewable polymer graphite (RPG) composites. Accordingly, the renewable polymeric composites were prepared through a film slip casting method at room temperature wherein graphite particles of various weight loadings were mixed with mass proportion 2:1 of renewable monomer and Methylene Diphenyl Diisocyanate, MDI respectively. The main concerned was given to renewable monomer based vegetable cooking oil produced at the SPEN-AMMC UTHM. The morphology-structural relation of the RPG composites confirmed that the graphite particles contain functional groups such as hydroxyl and carboxylic groups are randomly distributed and attributed to formation of interconnected interface within the polymeric composites. Furthermore, as the graphite particle loading increased, the thermal degradation temperature at three distinct decomposition stages shifted and to some extent, resulting in much higher crystallinity. As expected, the mechanical properties of the composites were also enhanced with the modulus and tensile strength increment up to ~440% and ~100% respectively. Significantly, all of these results correlate with viscoelastic properties in which the composites achieved percolation threshold at RPG20 composites. Moreover, the decreased in optical energy band gap (Eg) which afterwards took the leads to electrical conductivity (σ). Aptly, the composites (RPG20, RPG25 and RPG30) were found to possess favorable electrical conductivity range of 10-5 – 10-4 S/m, while all other samples were deemed to be not conductive due to improper dispersion of graphite particulates. On the contrary, UV curable composites did not show any significant enhancement and graphite particle acted as UV stabilizer in this manner. Therefore, the stability of the conductive renewable polymer graphite composite is suitable to be used in various composites applications

To verify the effectiveness of the proposal controller, both simulation and experimental are developed. The simulation and experimental result show that the amplitude of output voltage of the DC-AC converter can be controlled

    Benchmarking and viability assessment of optical packet switching for metro networks

    Optical packet switching (OPS) has been proposed as a strong candidate for future metro networks. This paper assesses the viability of an OPS-based ring architecture as proposed within the research project DAVID (Data And Voice Integration on DWDM), funded by the European Commission through the Information Society Technologies (IST) framework. Its feasibility is discussed from a physical-layer point of view, and its limitations in size are explored. Through dimensioning studies, we show that the proposed OPS architecture is competitive with respect to alternative metropolitan area network (MAN) approaches, including synchronous digital hierarchy, resilient packet rings (RPR), and star-based Ethernet. Finally, the proposed OPS architectures are discussed from a logical performance point of view, and a high-quality scheduling algorithm to control the packet-switching operations in the rings is explained

    Wavelet transform - artificial neural network receiver with adaptive equalisation for a diffuse indoor optical wireless OOK link

    This paper presents an alternative approach for signal detection and equalization using the continuous wavelet transform (CWT) and the artificial neural network (ANN) in diffuse indoor optical wireless links (OWL). The wavelet analysis is used for signal preprocessing (feature extraction) and the ANN for signal detection. Traditional receiver architectures based on matched filter (MF) experience significant performance degradation in the presence of artificial light interference (ALI) and multipath induced intersymbol interference (ISI). The proposed receiver structure reduces the effect of ALI and ISI by selecting a particular scale of CWT that corresponds to the desired signal and classifying the signal into binary 1 and 0 based on an observation vector. By selecting particular scales corresponding to the signal, the effect of ALI is reduced. We show that there is little variation when using 30 and 5 neurons in the first layer, with one layer ANN model showing a consistently worse BER performance than other models, whilst the 15 neuron model show some behaviour anomalies from a BER of approximately 10-3. The simulation results show that the Wavelet-ANN architecture outperforms the traditional MF based receiver even with the filter is matched to the ISI affected pulse shape. The Wavelet-ANN receiver is also capable of providing a bit error rate (BER) performance comparable to the equalized forms of traditional receiver structure

    Transmission transparency and potential convergence of optical network solutions at the physical layer for bit rates from 2.5 Gb·s-1 to 256 Gb·s-1

    In this paper, we investigate optical network recommendations GPON and XG-PON with triple-play services in terms of physical reach, number of subscribers, transceiver design, modulation format and implementation cost. Despite trends to increase the bit rate from 2.5 Gb s1 to 10 Gb s1 and beyond, TDMPONs cannot cope with bandwidth requirements of future networks. TDM and WDM techniques can be combined, resulting in improved scalability. Longer physical reach can be achieved by deploying active network elements within the transmission path. We investigate these options by considering their potential coexistence at the physical layer. Subsequently, we analyse the upgrade of optical channels to 100 Gb s1 and 256 Gb s1 by using advanced modulation formats, which combine polarization division multiplexing with coherent detection and digital signal processing. We show that PDMQPSK format is suitable for 100 Gb s1 systems and PDM-16QAM is more beneficial at 256 Gb s1. Simulations are performed in the OptSim software environment
