A framework for smart production-logistics systems based on CPS and industrial IoT
Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) has received increasing attention from both academia and industry. However, several challenges including excessively long waiting time and a serious waste of energy still exist in the IIoT-based integration between production and logistics in job shops. To address these challenges, a framework depicting the mechanism and methodology of smart production-logistics systems is proposed to implement intelligent modeling of key manufacturing resources and investigate self-organizing configuration mechanisms. A data-driven model based on analytical target cascading is developed to implement the self-organizing configuration. A case study based on a Chinese engine manufacturer is presented to validate the feasibility and evaluate the performance of the proposed framework and the developed method. The results show that the manufacturing time and the energy consumption are reduced and the computing time is reasonable. This paper potentially enables manufacturers to deploy IIoT-based applications and improve the efficiency of production-logistics systems
Internet enabled modelling of extended manufacturing enterprises using the process based techniques
The paper presents the preliminary results of an ongoing research project on Internet enabled process-based modelling of extended manufacturing enterprises. It is proposed to apply the Open System Architecture for CIM (CIMOSA) modelling framework alongside with object-oriented Petri Net models of enterprise processes and object-oriented techniques for extended enterprises modelling. The main features of the proposed approach are described and some components discussed. Elementary examples of object-oriented Petri Net implementation and real-time visualisation are presented

This conference is a local event aiming at bringing together the research students, staff and eminent external guests to celebrate Engineering and Computer Science Research at the University of Hertfordshire. The ECS Research Conference aims to showcase the broad landscape of research taking place in the School of Engineering and Computer Science. The 2019 conference was articulated around three topical cross-disciplinary themes: Make and Preserve the Future; Connect the People and Cities; and Protect and Care
Automatic generation of human machine interface screens from component-based reconfigurable virtual manufacturing cell
Increasing complexity and decreasing time-tomarket
require changes in the traditional way of building
automation systems. The paper describes a novel approach to automatically generate the Human Machine Interface (HMI) screens for component-based manufacturing cells based on their corresponding virtual models. Manufacturing cells are first prototyped and commissioned within a virtual engineering environment to validate and optimise the control behaviour. A framework for reusing the embedded control information in the
virtual models to automatically generate the HMI screens is proposed. Finally, for proof of concept, the proposed solution is implemented and tested on a test rig
A 3D immersive discrete event simulator for enabling prototyping of factory layouts
There is an increasing need to eliminate wasted time and money during factory layout design and subsequent construction. It is presently difficult for engineers to foresee if a certain layout is optimal for work and material flows. By exploiting modelling, simulation and visualisation techniques, this paper presents a tool concept called immersive WITNESS that combines the modelling strengths of Discrete Event Simulation (DES) with the 3D visualisation strengths of recent 3D low cost gaming technology to enable decision makers make informed design choices for future factories layouts. The tool enables engineers to receive immediate feedback on their design choices. Our results show that this tool has the potential to reduce rework as well as the associated costs of making physical prototypes
Factory Eco-Efficiency Modelling: Framework Development and Testing
Eco-efficiency is becoming an increasingly important organisational
performance measure. Its indicators are regularly used alongside productivity, cost,
quality, health and safety in operations and corporate social responsibility
reporting. The purpose of this paper is to show an eco-efficiency modelling
framework, and its application in the case of an automotive manufacturer. The
framework composes, models and analyses resource and production data. Focus
on energy, water distributions and material transformations in manufacturing, utility
and facility assets are used to analyse eco-efficiency. Resources are examined in
respect to three data granularity factors: subdivision, pulse, and magnitude. Models
are linked with performance indicators to assess asset eco-efficiency. This work
contributes to industrial sustainability literature by introducing a modelling
framework that links with data granularity and eco-efficiency indicators
Virtual manufacturing: prediction of work piece geometric quality by considering machine and set-up
Lien vers la version éditeur: http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/0951192X.2011.569952#.U4yZIHeqP3UIn the context of concurrent engineering, the design of the parts, the production planning and the manufacturing facility must be considered simultaneously. The design and development cycle can thus be reduced as manufacturing constraints are taken into account as early as possible. Thus, the design phase takes into account the manufacturing constraints as the customer requirements; more these constraints must not restrict the creativity of design. Also to facilitate the choice of the most suitable system for a specific process, Virtual Manufacturing is supplemented with developments of numerical computations (Altintas et al. 2005, Bianchi et al. 1996) in order to compare at low cost several solutions developed with several hypothesis without manufacturing of prototypes. In this context, the authors want to predict the work piece geometric more accurately by considering machine defects and work piece set-up, through the use of process simulation. A particular case study based on a 3 axis milling machine will be used here to illustrate the authors’ point of view. This study focuses on the following geometric defects: machine geometric errors, work piece positioning errors due to fixture system and part accuracy
Epidemiological and awareness study of tuberculosis in Batu Pahat, Johor, Malaysia
Tuberculosis (TB) remains one of the serious infectious diseases and has been
characterized worldwide as an epidemic by World Health Organization (WHO). TB
is still a public health problem in Malaysia. Baseline information on the disease
situation is one of the prerequisites for the development of appropriate control
measures. The cornerstone in proper management of TB patients is ensuring high
awareness in communities about TB. Thus the current research is directed to
investigate the epidemiology of TB, determined the level of public awareness of TB
and some factors that are responsible for the emergence of TB. Retrospective method
was used for collecting epidemiological data from the Batu Pahat chest clinic. All
registered TB patients (total of 1213 patients) from 2008 to 2013 in Batu Pahat Chest
Clinic were included in the study. On the other hand, the awareness study was
carried out by the use of questionnaires. A two-stage cluster sampling method was
used. 600 respondents were targeted which form the study sample. However, 498
questionnaires were returned. Descriptive data analysis was employed to describe the
results in frequency and percentage distribution. It was discovered that there was an
annually increase in TB incidence with pulmonary TB the most common infection in
Batu Pahat. Almost all (92.7%) the TB cases were new. On the other hand, majority
(87.0%) of respondents have heard about TB. Common symptoms identified by
respondents were coughing for over 2 weeks (51.8%), hemoptysis (49.2%) and
difficulty in breathing (50.2%). Smoking cigarette (74.3%), living with individual
having chronic cough (71.5%) and HIV/AIDS (65.7%) were the common risk factors
of TB identified by respondents. Most of the respondents (83.5%) were aware of the
existence of TB drugs. However, the standard DOTs treatment duration of 6-9
months was identified by few (12.4%) respondents. This research provided
information regarding TB status in Batu Pahat. The level of awareness among Batu
Pahat general public about TB is fairly good. Meanwhile, more need to be done
especially on diabetes as the risk factors of TB and treatment duration
