Highly efficient Localisation utilising Weightless neural systems
Efficient localisation is a highly desirable property for an autonomous navigation system. Weightless neural networks offer a real-time approach to robotics applications by reducing hardware and software requirements for pattern recognition techniques. Such networks offer the potential for objects, structures, routes and locations to be easily identified and maps constructed from fused limited sensor data as information becomes available. We show that in the absence of concise and complex information, localisation can be obtained using simple algorithms from data with inherent uncertainties using a combination of Genetic Algorithm techniques applied to a Weightless Neural Architecture
Phases of granular segregation in a binary mixture
We present results from an extensive experimental investigation into granular
segregation of a shallow binary mixture in which particles are driven by
frictional interactions with the surface of a vibrating horizontal tray. Three
distinct phases of the mixture are established viz; binary gas (unsegregated),
segregation liquid and segregation crystal. Their ranges of existence are
mapped out as a function of the system's primary control parameters using a
number of measures based on Voronoi tessellation. We study the associated
transitions and show that segregation can be suppressed is the total filling
fraction of the granular layer, , is decreased below a critical value,
, or if the dimensionless acceleration of the driving, , is

Information and algorithms appear to be central to biological organization
and processes, from the storage and reproduction of genetic information to
the control of developmental processes to the sophisticated computations
performed by the nervous system. Much as human technology uses electronic
microprocessors to control electromechanical devices, biological
organisms use biochemical circuits to control molecular and chemical events.
The engineering and programming of biochemical circuits, in vivo and in
vitro, would transform industries that use chemical and nanostructured
materials. Although the construction of biochemical circuits has been
explored theoretically since the birth of molecular biology, our practical
experience with the capabilities and possible programming of biochemical
algorithms is still very young
Multiple object tracking using a neural cost function
This paper presents a new approach to the tracking of multiple objects in CCTV surveillance using a combination of simple neural cost functions based on Self-Organizing Maps, and a greedy assignment algorithm. Using a reference standard data set and an exhaustive search algorithm for benchmarking, we show that the cost function plays the most significant role in realizing high levels of performance. The neural cost function’s context-sensitive treatment of appearance, change of appearance and trajectory yield better tracking than a simple, explicitly designed cost function. The algorithm matches 98.8% of objects to within 15 pixels
