Towards a Queueing-Based Framework for In-Network Function Computation
We seek to develop network algorithms for function computation in sensor
networks. Specifically, we want dynamic joint aggregation, routing, and
scheduling algorithms that have analytically provable performance benefits due
to in-network computation as compared to simple data forwarding. To this end,
we define a class of functions, the Fully-Multiplexible functions, which
includes several functions such as parity, MAX, and k th -order statistics. For
such functions we exactly characterize the maximum achievable refresh rate of
the network in terms of an underlying graph primitive, the min-mincut. In
acyclic wireline networks, we show that the maximum refresh rate is achievable
by a simple algorithm that is dynamic, distributed, and only dependent on local
information. In the case of wireless networks, we provide a MaxWeight-like
algorithm with dynamic flow splitting, which is shown to be throughput-optimal
Transform-based Distributed Data Gathering
A general class of unidirectional transforms is presented that can be
computed in a distributed manner along an arbitrary routing tree. Additionally,
we provide a set of conditions under which these transforms are invertible.
These transforms can be computed as data is routed towards the collection (or
sink) node in the tree and exploit data correlation between nodes in the tree.
Moreover, when used in wireless sensor networks, these transforms can also
leverage data received at nodes via broadcast wireless communications. Various
constructions of unidirectional transforms are also provided for use in data
gathering in wireless sensor networks. New wavelet transforms are also proposed
which provide significant improvements over existing unidirectional transforms
Electronically-switched Directional Antennas for Low-power Wireless Networks: A Prototype-driven Evaluation
We study the benefits of electronically-switched directional antennas in low-power wireless networks. This antenna technology may improve energy efficiency by increasing the communication range and by alleviating contention in directions other than the destination, but in principle requires a dedicated network stack. Unlike most existing works, we start by characterizing a real-world antenna prototype, and apply this to an existing low-power wireless stack, which we adapt with minimal changes. Our results show that: i) the combination of a low-cost directional antenna and a conventional network stack already brings significant performance improvements, e.g., nearly halving the radio-on time per delivered packet; ii) the margin of improvement available to alternative clean-slate protocol designs is similarly large and concentrated in the control rather than the data plane; iii) by artificially modifying our antenna's link-layer model, we can point at further potential benefits opened by different antenna designs
Shortest Path versus Multi-Hub Routing in Networks with Uncertain Demand
We study a class of robust network design problems motivated by the need to
scale core networks to meet increasingly dynamic capacity demands. Past work
has focused on designing the network to support all hose matrices (all matrices
not exceeding marginal bounds at the nodes). This model may be too conservative
if additional information on traffic patterns is available. Another extreme is
the fixed demand model, where one designs the network to support peak
point-to-point demands. We introduce a capped hose model to explore a broader
range of traffic matrices which includes the above two as special cases. It is
known that optimal designs for the hose model are always determined by
single-hub routing, and for the fixed- demand model are based on shortest-path
routing. We shed light on the wider space of capped hose matrices in order to
see which traffic models are more shortest path-like as opposed to hub-like. To
address the space in between, we use hierarchical multi-hub routing templates,
a generalization of hub and tree routing. In particular, we show that by adding
peak capacities into the hose model, the single-hub tree-routing template is no
longer cost-effective. This initiates the study of a class of robust network
design (RND) problems restricted to these templates. Our empirical analysis is
based on a heuristic for this new hierarchical RND problem. We also propose
that it is possible to define a routing indicator that accounts for the
strengths of the marginals and peak demands and use this information to choose
the appropriate routing template. We benchmark our approach against other
well-known routing templates, using representative carrier networks and a
variety of different capped hose traffic demands, parameterized by the relative
importance of their marginals as opposed to their point-to-point peak demands
Let the Tree Bloom: Scalable Opportunistic Routing with ORPL
Routing in battery-operated wireless networks is challenging, posing a tradeoff between energy and latency. Previous work has shown that opportunistic routing can achieve low-latency data collection in duty-cycled networks. However, applications are now considered where nodes are not only periodic data sources, but rather addressable end points generating traffic with arbitrary patterns.
We present ORPL, an opportunistic routing protocol that supports any-to-any, on-demand traffic. ORPL builds upon RPL, the standard protocol for low-power IPv6 networks. By combining RPL's tree-like topology with opportunistic routing, ORPL forwards data to any destination based on the mere knowledge of the nodes' sub-tree. We use bitmaps and Bloom filters to represent and propagate this information in a space-efficient way, making ORPL scale to large networks of addressable nodes. Our results in a 135-node testbed show that ORPL outperforms a number of state-of-the-art solutions including RPL and CTP, conciliating a sub-second latency and a sub-percent duty cycle. ORPL also increases robustness and scalability, addressing the whole network reliably through a 64-byte Bloom filter, where RPL needs kilobytes of routing tables for the same task
Robotic Wireless Sensor Networks
In this chapter, we present a literature survey of an emerging, cutting-edge,
and multi-disciplinary field of research at the intersection of Robotics and
Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) which we refer to as Robotic Wireless Sensor
Networks (RWSN). We define a RWSN as an autonomous networked multi-robot system
that aims to achieve certain sensing goals while meeting and maintaining
certain communication performance requirements, through cooperative control,
learning and adaptation. While both of the component areas, i.e., Robotics and
WSN, are very well-known and well-explored, there exist a whole set of new
opportunities and research directions at the intersection of these two fields
which are relatively or even completely unexplored. One such example would be
the use of a set of robotic routers to set up a temporary communication path
between a sender and a receiver that uses the controlled mobility to the
advantage of packet routing. We find that there exist only a limited number of
articles to be directly categorized as RWSN related works whereas there exist a
range of articles in the robotics and the WSN literature that are also relevant
to this new field of research. To connect the dots, we first identify the core
problems and research trends related to RWSN such as connectivity,
localization, routing, and robust flow of information. Next, we classify the
existing research on RWSN as well as the relevant state-of-the-arts from
robotics and WSN community according to the problems and trends identified in
the first step. Lastly, we analyze what is missing in the existing literature,
and identify topics that require more research attention in the future
Advanced Message Routing for Scalable Distributed Simulations
The Joint Forces Command (JFCOM) Experimentation Directorate (J9)'s recent Joint Urban Operations (JUO)
experiments have demonstrated the viability of Forces Modeling and Simulation in a distributed environment. The
JSAF application suite, combined with the RTI-s communications system, provides the ability to run distributed
simulations with sites located across the United States, from Norfolk, Virginia to Maui, Hawaii. Interest-aware
routers are essential for communications in the large, distributed environments, and the current RTI-s framework
provides such routers connected in a straightforward tree topology. This approach is successful for small to medium
sized simulations, but faces a number of significant limitations for very large simulations over high-latency, wide
area networks. In particular, traffic is forced through a single site, drastically increasing distances messages must
travel to sites not near the top of the tree. Aggregate bandwidth is limited to the bandwidth of the site hosting the
top router, and failures in the upper levels of the router tree can result in widespread communications losses
throughout the system.
To resolve these issues, this work extends the RTI-s software router infrastructure to accommodate more
sophisticated, general router topologies, including both the existing tree framework and a new generalization of the
fully connected mesh topologies used in the SF Express ModSAF simulations of 100K fully interacting vehicles.
The new software router objects incorporate the scalable features of the SF Express design, while optionally using
low-level RTI-s objects to perform actual site-to-site communications. The (substantial) limitations of the original
mesh router formalism have been eliminated, allowing fully dynamic operations. The mesh topology capabilities
allow aggregate bandwidth and site-to-site latencies to match actual network performance. The heavy resource load at
the root node can now be distributed across routers at the participating sites
