    Signboard Text Translator: A Guide to Tourist

    The travelers face troubles in understanding the signboards which are written in local language. The travelers can rely on smart phone for traveling purposes. Smart phones become most popular in recent years in terms of market value and the number of useful applications to the users. This work intends to build up a web application that can recognize the English content present on signboard pictures captured using a smart phone, translate the content from English to Telugu, and display the translated Telugu text back onto the screen of the phone. Experiments have been conducted on various signboard pictures and the outcomes demonstrate the viability of the proposed approach

    Empirical mode decomposition-based facial pose estimation inside video sequences

    We describe a new pose-estimation algorithm via integration of the strength in both empirical mode decomposition (EMD) and mutual information. While mutual information is exploited to measure the similarity between facial images to estimate poses, EMD is exploited to decompose input facial images into a number of intrinsic mode function (IMF) components, which redistribute the effect of noise, expression changes, and illumination variations as such that, when the input facial image is described by the selected IMF components, all the negative effects can be minimized. Extensive experiments were carried out in comparisons to existing representative techniques, and the results show that the proposed algorithm achieves better pose-estimation performances with robustness to noise corruption, illumination variation, and facial expressions

    Writer identification using curvature-free features

    Feature engineering takes a very important role in writer identification which has been widely studied in the literature. Previous works have shown that the joint feature distribution of two properties can improve the performance. The joint feature distribution makes feature relationships explicit instead of roping that a trained classifier picks up a non-linear relation present in the data. In this paper, we propose two novel and curvature-free features: run-lengths of local binary pattern (LBPruns) and cloud of line distribution (COLD) features for writer identification. The LBPruns is the joint distribution of the traditional run-length and local binary pattern (LBP) methods, which computes the run-lengths of local binary patterns on both binarized and gray scale images. The COLD feature is the joint distribution of the relation between orientation and length of line segments obtained from writing contours in handwritten documents. Our proposed LBPruns and COLD are textural-based curvature-free features and capture the line information of handwritten texts instead of the curvature information. The combination of the LBPruns and COLD features provides a significant improvement on the CERUG data set, handwritten documents on which contain a large number of irregular-curvature strokes. The results of proposed features evaluated on other two widely used data sets (Firemaker and IAM) demonstrate promising results
