    Reality and the Meaning of Evil: On the Moral Causality of Signs

    ABSTRACT: “Evil is really only a privation.” This philosophical commonplace reflects an ancient solution to the problem of theodicy in one of its dimensions: is evil of such a nature that it must have God as its author? Stated in this particular way, it also reflects the commonplace identification of the real with natural being—the realm of what exists independently of human thought and perspectives—as opposed to all that is termed, by comparison, “merely subjective” and “unreal”. If we stick with this way of construing the meaning of “reality”, then by the excellent arguments of the tradition we are also stuck with defending the sufficiency of privation as a response to what evil “really is”. In this article, we argue against both ways of being stuck. We argue, first, that a one-sided focus upon the being of nature blocks an adequate understanding of the world we actually live in: the semiotically constituted lifeworld that is the proper locus of human realities, including moral evil. We argue, second, that the positivity of moral evil consists not only, nor even primarily, in the positivity of “action” as such, but in structures of objectivity engendered by creative reason that oppose the due end, and that involve a specific genus of pure object which we call a mystical daydream. Like any objects, these objects are communicable and formative in relation to the lifeworld, within which they in turn engender further interpretants for both those who do and those who suffer evil, thanks to the causality of signs

    Two different versions of the ending of the first additament to C. S. Peirce's 1908 article, "A Neglected Argument for the Reality of God," appear in the Collected Papers but were omitted from The Essential Peirce. In one, he linked the hypothesis of God's Reality to his entire theory of logic as semeiotic, claiming that proving the latter would also prove the former. In the other, he offered a final outline of his cosmology, in which the Reality of God as Ens necessarium is indispensable to both the origin and order of our existing universe of Signs. Exploring these passages, as well as the unpublished manuscript drafts of the article, provides important insights into the key concepts of instinct and continuity within Peirce's comprehensive system of thought

    In interpreting communication, we are often trapped in symbols and a set of signs that are used. This is due to our simple assumption that tends assume on symbols or signs that stand alone in representing meaning. We forget that symbols or signs, as well as meaning are complex. Though they are not stand alone. They are representation of the many factors that influence them, including the knowledge and culture of their participants. In media, the meaning of symbols or signs that used to convey news is very dependent on the ideology of the media and the whole organization that manages the media. Even the "reality of truth" is very dependent on the construction of the media in processing it. Likewise in film and music, certain symbols or signs that are used are representations of reality which must be explored and understood as a form of communication, even a picture of the social and cultural reality of the participants. This is where the semiotics in communication emerge, and offer themselves as an important approach in understanding the true meaning of symbols or signs used in a communication process

    Orthodoxy has, by the Providence of God, been placed between Western Christianity, and Sunni Islam. Church nationalism (phyletism) has always been present in political and linguistic nationalism in the former Yugoslavia. The relationship between Serbian Orthodoxy, with Islam and Western Christianity is not satisfactory. In order to become satisfactory, it would be important for the Orthodox Church to create a new theology which would, primarily, be a theological (Orthodox) response to the signs of the times.     Augmented Reality HUDs: Warning Signs and Drivers’ Situation Awareness

    Drivers must search dynamic and complex visual environments to perceive relevant environmental elements such as warning signs, pedestrians and other vehicles to select the appropriate driving maneuver. The objective of this research was to examine how an Augmented Reality Head Up Display (AR HUD) for warning signs affects driver Situation Awareness (SA) and attention. Participants viewed videos of real driving scenes with an AR HUDs or no display and were asked to report what elements in the driving scene attracted their attention. At the completion of the first driving video participants were given a warning sign recognition test. Participants then watched a second video and the Situation Awareness Global Assessment Technique (SAGAT), a measure of global SA was administered. Participants eye movements were recorded when watching the videos to investigate how drivers interacting with an AR HUD attend to the environment compared to drivers with no AR HUD. AR HUDs for warning signs are effective in making warning signs more attentionally conspicuous to drivers in both low and high clutter driving environments. The HUD did not lead to increased fixation duration or frequency to warning signs in many situations. However when two driving items were in sight (sign and car) and participants needed to decide where to attend, they experienced attentional tunneling. In complex driving situations participants spent a significantly longer proportion of time looking at warning signs in the HUD. In simple driving situations, AR HUDs appear to make warning signs more salient and conspicuous. However, in complex situations in high clutter driving environments AR HUDs may lead to attentional tunneling
