    Damage identification in structural health monitoring: a brief review from its implementation to the Use of data-driven applications

    The damage identification process provides relevant information about the current state of a structure under inspection, and it can be approached from two different points of view. The first approach uses data-driven algorithms, which are usually associated with the collection of data using sensors. Data are subsequently processed and analyzed. The second approach uses models to analyze information about the structure. In the latter case, the overall performance of the approach is associated with the accuracy of the model and the information that is used to define it. Although both approaches are widely used, data-driven algorithms are preferred in most cases because they afford the ability to analyze data acquired from sensors and to provide a real-time solution for decision making; however, these approaches involve high-performance processors due to the high computational cost. As a contribution to the researchers working with data-driven algorithms and applications, this work presents a brief review of data-driven algorithms for damage identification in structural health-monitoring applications. This review covers damage detection, localization, classification, extension, and prognosis, as well as the development of smart structures. The literature is systematically reviewed according to the natural steps of a structural health-monitoring system. This review also includes information on the types of sensors used as well as on the development of data-driven algorithms for damage identification.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

    Condition Monitoring and Fault Diagnosis of Roller Element Bearing

    Rolling element bearings play a crucial role in determining the overall health condition of a rotating machine. An effective condition-monitoring program on bearing operation can improve a machine’s operation efficiency, reduce the maintenance/replacement cost, and prolong the useful lifespan of a machine. This chapter presents a general overview of various condition-monitoring and fault diagnosis techniques for rolling element bearings in the current practice and discusses the pros and cons of each technique. The techniques introduced in the chapter include data acquisition techniques, major parameters used for bearing condition monitoring, signal analysis techniques, and bearing fault diagnosis techniques using either statistical features or artificial intelligent tools. Several case studies are also presented in the chapter to exemplify the application of these techniques in the data analysis as well as bearing fault diagnosis and pattern recognition

    Incipient Fault Diagnosis of a Grid-Connected T-Type Multilevel Inverter Using Multilayer Perceptron and Walsh Transform

    Publisher Copyright: © 2023 by the authors.This article deals with fault detection and the classification of incipient and intermittent open-transistor faults in grid-connected three-level T-type inverters. Normally, open-transistor detection algorithms are developed for permanent faults. Nevertheless, the difficulty to detect incipient and intermittent faults is much greater, and appropriate methods are required. This requirement is due to the fact that over time, its repetition may lead to permanent failures that may lead to irreversible degradation. Therefore, the early detection of these failures is very important to ensure the reliability of the system and avoid unscheduled stops. For diagnosing these incipient and intermittent faults, a novel method based on a Walsh transform combined with a multilayer perceptron (MLP)-based classifier is proposed in this paper. This non-classical approach of using the Walsh transform not only allows accurate detections but is also very fast. This last characteristic is very important in these applications due to their practical implementation. The proposed method includes two main steps. First, the acquired AC currents are used by the control system and processed using the Walsh transform. This results in detailed information used to potentially identify open-transistor faults. Then, such information is processed using the MLP to finally determine whether a fault is present or not.     Induction Machine Diagnosis using Stator Current Advanced Signal Processing

    International audienceInduction machines are widely used in industrial applications. Safety, reliability, efficiency and performance are major concerns that direct the research activities in the field of electrical machines. Even though the induction machines are very reliable, many failures can occur such as bearing faults, air-gap eccentricity and broken rotor bars. Therefore, the challenge is to detect them at an early stage in order to prevent breakdowns. In particular, stator current-based condition monitoring is an extensively investigated field for cost and maintenance savings. In fact, several signal processing techniques for stator current-based induction machine faults detection have been studied. These techniques can be classified into: spectral analysis approaches, demodulation techniques and time-frequency representations. In addition, for diagnostic purposes, more sophisticated techniques are required in order to determine the faulty components. This paper intends to review the spectral analysis techniques and time-frequency representations. These techniques are demonstrated on experimental data issued from a test bed equipped with a 0.75 kW induction machine.     Recursive Singular Spectrum Analysis for Induction Machines Unbalanced Rotor Fault Diagnosis

    One of the major challenges of diagnosing rotor symmetry faults in induction machines is severe modulation of fault and supply frequency components. In particular, existing techniques are not able to identify fault components in the case of low slips. In this paper, this problem is tackled by proposing a novel approach. First, a new use of singular spectrum analysis (SSA), as a powerful spectrum analyser, is introduced for fault detection. Our idea is to treat the stator current signature of the wound rotor induction machine as a time series. In this approach, the current signature is decomposed into several eigenvalue spectra (rather than frequency spectra) to find a subspace where the fault component is recognisable. Subsequently, the fault component is detected using some data-driven filters constructed with the knowledge about characteristics of supply and fault components. Then, an inexpensive peak localisation procedure is applied to the power spectrum of the fault component to identify the exact frequency of the fault. The fault detection and localisation methods are then combined in a recursive regime to further improve the diagnosis’ performance particularly at high rotor speeds and small rotor faults. The proposed approach is data-driven and is directly applied to the raw signal with no suppression or filtration of the frequency harmonics with a low computational complexity. The numerical results obtained with real data at several rotation speeds and fault severities, unveil the effectiveness and real-time feature of the proposed approach

    ANOVA and other statistical tools for bearing damage detection

    The aim of the paper is to exhaustively exploit and test some statistical tools, such as ANOVA and Linear Discriminant Analysis, to investigate a massive amounts of data collected over a rig available @DIRG Lab, specifically conceived to test high speed aeronautical bearings; the rig permits the control of rotational speed (6000 – 30000 RPM), radial load (0 to 1800 N) and temperature, and allows monitoring vibrations by means of 4 tri-axial accelerometers. Fifteen different damages have been realised on the bearing but, for simplicity, this papers only treats those cases where simple identification methods have failed or not demonstrated to be fully affordable. The damages have been inferred on rolls or on the internal ring, with different severities, which are reported as a function of their extension, i.e. 150, 250, 450 μm. A total number of 17 combinations of load and speed have been analysed per each damaged bearing. Although ANOVA rigorously applies when some conditions are respected on the probability distribution of the responses, such as Independence of observations, Normality (normal distribution of the residuals) and Homoscedasticity (homogeneity of variances – equal variances), the paper exploits the robustness of the technique even when data do not fully fall into the requisites. Analyses are focused on the best features to be taken into account, trying to seek for the most informative, but also trying to extract a “best choice” for the acceleration direction and the most informative point to be monitored over the simple structure. Wanting to focus on the classification of the single observation, Linear Discriminant Analysis has been tested, demonstrating to be quite effective as the number of misclassification is not very high, (at least considering the widest damages). All these classifications have unfortunately the limit of requiring labelled examples. Acquisitions in un- damaged and damaged conditions are in fact essential to guarantee their applicability, which is quite often impossible for real industrial plants. The target can be anyway reached by adopting distances from un-damaged conditions which, conversely, must be known as a reference. Advantages of the statistical methods are quickness, simplicity and full independence from human interaction
