Ultra-high frequency, high Q/volume micromechanical resonators in a planar AlN phononic crystal
Citation: Baboly, M. G., Alaie, S., Reinke, C. M., El-Kady, I., & Leseman, Z. C. (2016). Ultra-high frequency, high Q/volume micromechanical resonators in a planar AlN phononic crystal. Journal of Applied Physics, 120(3), 5. doi:10.1063/1.4958671This paper presents the first design and experimental demonstration of an ultrahigh frequency complete phononic crystal (PnC) bandgap aluminum nitride (AlN)/air structure operating in the GHz range. A complete phononic bandgap of this design is used to efficiently and simultaneously confine elastic vibrations in a resonator. The PnC structure is fabricated by etching a square array of air holes in an AlN slab. The fabricated PnC resonator resonates at 1.117 GHz, which corresponds to an out-of-plane mode. The measured bandgap and resonance frequencies are in very good agreement with the eigen-frequency and frequency-domain finite element analyses. As a result, a quality factor/volume of 7.6 x 10(17)/m(3) for the confined resonance mode was obtained that is the largest value reported for this type of PnC resonator to date. These results are an important step forward in achieving possible applications of PnCs for RF communication and signal processing with smaller dimensions. Published by AIP Publishing
MPEG-1 bitstreams processing for audio content analysis
In this paper, we present the MPEG-1 Audio bitstreams processing work which our research group is involved in. This work is primarily based on the processing of the encoded bitstream, and the extraction of useful audio features for the purposes of analysis and browsing. In order to prepare for the discussion of these features, the MPEG-1 audio bitstream format is first described. The Application Interface Protocol (API) which we have been developing in C++ is then introduced, before completing the paper with a discussion on audio feature extraction
Data analysis of gravitational-wave signals from spinning neutron stars. III. Detection statistics and computational requirements
We develop the analytic and numerical tools for data analysis of the
gravitational-wave signals from spinning neutron stars for ground-based laser
interferometric detectors. We study in detail the statistical properties of the
optimum functional that need to be calculated in order to detect the
gravitational-wave signal from a spinning neutron star and estimate its
parameters. We derive formulae for false alarm and detection probabilities both
for the optimal and the suboptimal filters. We assess the computational
requirements needed to do the signal search. We compare a number of criteria to
build sufficiently accurate templates for our data analysis scheme. We verify
the validity of our concepts and formulae by means of the Monte Carlo
simulations. We present algorithms by which one can estimate the parameters of
the continuous signals accurately.Comment: LaTeX, 45 pages, 13 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.
mARC: Memory by Association and Reinforcement of Contexts
This paper introduces the memory by Association and Reinforcement of Contexts
(mARC). mARC is a novel data modeling technology rooted in the second
quantization formulation of quantum mechanics. It is an all-purpose incremental
and unsupervised data storage and retrieval system which can be applied to all
types of signal or data, structured or unstructured, textual or not. mARC can
be applied to a wide range of information clas-sification and retrieval
problems like e-Discovery or contextual navigation. It can also for-mulated in
the artificial life framework a.k.a Conway "Game Of Life" Theory. In contrast
to Conway approach, the objects evolve in a massively multidimensional space.
In order to start evaluating the potential of mARC we have built a mARC-based
Internet search en-gine demonstrator with contextual functionality. We compare
the behavior of the mARC demonstrator with Google search both in terms of
performance and relevance. In the study we find that the mARC search engine
demonstrator outperforms Google search by an order of magnitude in response
time while providing more relevant results for some classes of queries
Pulse Shape Analysis and Identification of Multipoint Events in a Large-Volume Proportional Counter in an Experimental Search for 2K Capture Kr-78
A pulse shape analysis algorithm and a method for suppressing the noise
component of signals from a large copper proportional counter in the experiment
aimed at searching for 2K capture of Kr-78 are described. These signals
correspond to a compound event with different numbers of charge clusters due to
from primary ionization is formed by these signals. A technique for separating
single- and multipoint events and determining the charge in individual clusters
is presented. Using the Daubechies wavelets in multiresolutional signal
analysis, it is possible to increase the sensitivity and the resolution in
extraction of multipoint events in the detector by a factor of 3-4.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures. submitted to Instruments and Experimental
