    Get PDF
A hybrid approach for the synthesis of planar thinned antenna arrays is presented. The proposed solution exploits and combines the most attractive features of a particle swarm algorithm and those of a combinatorial method based on the noncyclic difference sets of Hadamard type. Numerical experiments validate the proposed solution, showing improvements with respect to previous results. (c) 2009 IEEE. Personal use of this material is permitted. Conflicting Parameter Pair Optimization for Linear Aperiodic Antenna Array using Chebyshev Taper based Genetic Algorithm

    Get PDF
In this study, the peak side lobe level (PSLL) in the radiation pattern of a linear antenna array (LAA) is lowered without affecting its first null beam width (FNBW). Antenna array synthesis is commonly applied to achieve high directivity, low side lobes, high gain and desired null positions in the output radiation pattern. But output parameters like PSLL, null positions and beam width conflict with each other, i.e. as one parameter improves, the other deteriorates. To avoid this problem, a multi-objective optimization algorithm can be implemented, in which both the conflicting parameters can be simultaneously optimized. This work proposes a multi-objective algorithm, which takes advantages of the well-known Chebyshev tapering and genetic algorithm (GA), to lower the PSLL without broadening the beam further. Array elements are fed using Chebyshev tapered excitations while GA is incorporated to optimize the elemental spacing. The results of 28-element LAA are compared with those of multi-objective Cauchy mutated cat swarm optimization (MO-CMCSO) existing in literature, which has also been proven to be superior to multi-objective cat swarm optimization (MO-CSO) and multi-objective particle swarm optimization (MO-PSO). Results indicate that the proposed algorithm performs better by further reducing the PSLL from -21.57 dB (MO-CMCSO) to -28.18 dB, while maintaining the same FNBW of 7.4 degrees

Characteristics of different focusing antennas in the near field region

Focusing antennas are of interest in many application including microwave wireless power transmission, remote (non-contact) sensing, and medical applications. Different kinds of antennas such as array antennas, reflector antennas and Fresnel zone plate (FZP) antennas have been used for these applications. Here, first, a new scheme in designing focused array antennas with desired sidelobe levels (SLLs) in the near field region is presented. The performance of the large focused array antennas is predicted based on the knowledge of the mutual admittances of a smaller array. The effects of various focal distances on the near field pattern of these antennas are investigated. Then, electric field pattern characteristics of the focused Fresnel zone plate lens antennas in the near-field region are presented. The FZP antenna fed by a circular horn is implemented and the effects of various focal lengths on the near field pattern of this antenna are examined. It is shown that the maximum field intensity occurs closer to the antenna aperture than to the focal point and this displacement increases as the focal point moves away from the antenna aperture. The focusing properties of ultra-wideband (UWB) array antennas are also presented. Large current radiator (LCR) antennas are modeled by replacing the antenna with a set of infinitesimal dipoles producing the same near field of the antenna. LCR antenna arrays are used to provide high concentration of microwave power into a small region. It is shown that the defocusing effect occurs in pulse radiating antennas as well. Invasive weed optimization (IWO), a new optimization algorithm, is also employed to optimize the pulsed array antenna. In the attempt of optimizing the focused arrays, a new scenario for designing thinned array antennas using this optimization method is introduced. It is shown that by using this method, the number of elements in the array can be optimized, which yields a more efficient pattern with less number of elements. By applying this new optimization method to UWB arrays, the peak power delivered to a localized region can be increased

Comparative and comprehensive study of linear antenna arrays’ synthesis

In this paper, a comparative and comprehensive study of synthesizing linear antenna array (LAA) designs, is presented. Different desired objectives are considered in this paper; reducing the maximum sidelobe radiation pattern (i.e., pencil-beam pattern), controlling the first null beamwidth (FNBW), and imposing nulls at specific angles in some designs, which are accomplished by optimizing different array parameters (feed current amplitudes, feed current phase, and array elements positions). Three different optimization algorithms are proposed in order to achieve the wanted goals; grasshopper optimization algorithms (GOA), antlion optimization (ALO), and a new hybrid optimization algorithm based on GOA and ALO. The obtained results show the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed algorithms to achieve the wanted targets. In most experiments, the proposed algorithms outperform other well-known optimization methods, such as; Biogeography based optimization (BBO), particle swarm optimization (PSO), firefly algorithm (FA), cuckoo search (CS) algorithm, genetic algorithm (GA), Taguchi method, self-adaptive differential evolution (SADE), modified spider monkey optimization (MSMO), symbiotic organisms search (SOS), enhanced firefly algorithm (EFA), bat flower pollination (BFP) and tabu search (TS) algorithm

AbstractThis paper presents an optimal thinning of a large multiple concentric circular ring arrays of uniformly excited isotropic antennas based on Particle Swarm Optimization method. Circular Antenna Array (CAA) has gained immense popularity in the field of communications nowadays. It has proved to be a better alternative over other types of antenna array configuration due to its all-azimuth scan capability, and the beam pattern which can be kept invariant. In this paper, a 9 ringed Concentric Circular Antenna Array (CCAA) with central element feeding is considered. Extensive simulation results justify the optimization efficacy of the proposed approach for antenna array synthesis. The simulation results show that the number of effective antenna elements can be brought down from 279 to 139 with simultaneous reduction in Side Lobe Level by 20.37dB relative to the main beam with a fixed half power beamwidth using PSO. Real coded Genetic Algorithm (RGA) as well is also adopted to compare the results of PSO algorithm
