The Making of a Makerspace: A Handbook on Getting Started
This research project sought to develop a makerspace handbook that is useful in supporting pre-service teacher candidates to integrate makerspace and maker mindset in their classrooms. As makerspaces have become more common in our schools and classrooms, the handbook was created to provide a practical, hands-on guide for getting started with designing and implementing makerspaces in K-12 classrooms and schools. This project investigated the knowledge needed to design and facilitate makerspace learning environments, developed the handbook The Making of a Makerspace: A Handbook on Getting Started, and collected expert feedback from reviewers of the handbook to contribute to teachersʼ knowledge about makerspace technologies. Emergent themes from data analysis included how the handbook supported three areas of makerspaces: (a) stations and activities, (b) the maker culture, and (c) future ready skill development. A resource such as this can grow and evolve but was designed to provide a foundation for pre-service teacher candidates getting started with makerspace design and maker mindset in their own teaching practice
English Curriculum at Elementary and Secondary Schools in Japan : Where Do We Come From? Where Are We? Where Are We Going?
The English curriculum at elementary and secondary schools in Japan will change in 2020, and entrance examinations to universities will change in 2021, due to the important role that English has under globalization today. English has become a Lingua Franca, and English education should contribute to raising our awareness as global citizens and developing empathy toward one another. Teaching ethics, relevant to the globalized world today, is desired so that children will be able to make friends with people from all over the world. The New Course of StudyEnglish educationglobalizationeducational reform

Toward a digital future of curriculum, pedagogy & assessment
In the last three decades, digital technologies have
become an integral part of our lives, societies and
education systems worldwide. Hence it is essential
that educators can teach and incorporate technologies
in their teaching practices (Yadav & Lachney, 2022).
By doing so, we can ‘future-proof’ the upcoming
generations who will learn with the aid of constantly
evolving technologies, need to understand the impact
of technologies on society, and must use technologies
to showcase creativity and innovation in all aspects
of life. The Covid-19 pandemic and subsequent
lockdowns since early 2020 have accelerated the
incorporation of technology in education. Webmediated
education has been introduced to replace
or supplement traditional offline modes of teaching
and learning. The willingness to adopt and experiment
with digital technologies in education, including
online learning software, video conferencing tools,
virtual tutoring, and learning apps, continues to grow.
We have chosen the following blog posts for this edition
of BERA Bites because they provide valuable insights
into curriculum, pedagogy and assessment, and suggest
further lines of inquiry for research and practice. The
authors address important issues impacting education
and offer ideas for developing a shared vision for the
digital future of education

Reasons why self-directed learning is important in South African during the COVID-19 pandemic
We live in unprecedented times and are bombarded with various changes to normality and everyday usual business. Recently, the COVID-19 pandemic has changed the face of university education in South Africa and the world. The move towards remote teaching has denied medical students to do their practical work in hospitals, science students to access their laboratories where they conduct their experiments as part of their coursework and has denied students a chance to gain information in university libraries. This has had effects on both students’ and lecturers’ progress in the academic year and has called for an abrupt change in the way they view teaching and learning. The aim of this article is to highlight the significance of being a self-directed learner during the COVID-19 pandemic and to answer the following question: Why is self-directed learning important in South Africa during the COVID-19 pandemic? To answer this question, I discuss the challenges faced globally during the COVID-19 pandemic, and I focus on the challenges higher education institutions face with regard to remote teaching. Thereafter, I discuss self-directed learning and its importance in students and teachers with the aim of highlighting what self-directed learners can do when faced with the abrupt changes brought about by COVID-19. Lastly, recommendations are made to highlight that higher education institutions should prepare learners to be self-directed in their learning in order to prepare them for such abrupt changes in the future
