    Numerical simulation of the dynamic response in pulse-loaded fibre-metal-laminated plates

    This article presents a three-dimensional constitutive model to replicate the dynamic response of blastloaded fibre–metal laminates made of 2024-0 aluminium alloy and woven composite (glass fibre–reinforced polypropylene). Simulation of the dynamic response is challenging when extreme localised loads are of concern and requires reliable material constitutive models as well as accurate modelling techniques. It is well known that back layers in a fibre–metal laminate provide structural support for front layers; thus, proper modelling of constituent failure and degradation is essential to understanding structural damage and failure. The improved developed model to analyse damage initiation, progression and failure of the composite is implemented in finite element code ABAQUS, and a good correlation is observed with experimental results for displacements of the back and front faces as presented by other researchers. The model was also able to predict accurately the tearing impulses. Finally, the concepts of the ‘efficiency of the charge’ and ‘effectiveness of the target’ are proposed in the context of localised blast loading on a structure.     A ceramic reusable, externally applied composite thermal protection system (TPS) is proposed. The system functions by utilizing a ceramic/ceramic upper shell structure which effectively separates its primary functions as a thermal insulator and as a load carrier to transmit loads to the cold structure. The composite tile system also prevents impact damage to the atmospheric entry vehicle thermal protection system. The composite tile comprises a structurally strong upper ceramic/ceramic shell manufactured from ceramic fibers and ceramic matrix meeting the thermal and structural requirements of a tile used on a re-entry aerospace vehicle. In addition, a lightweight high temperature ceramic lower temperature base tile is used. The upper shell and lower tile are attached by means effective to withstand the extreme temperatures (3000 to 3200F) and stress conditions. The composite tile may include one or more layers of variable density rigid or flexible thermal insulation. The assembly of the overall tile is facilitated by two or more locking mechanisms on opposing sides of the overall tile assembly. The assembly may occur subsequent to the installation of the lower shell tile on the spacecraft structural skin

    Handling Analyses Of A Vehicle Fitted With A Roll-Resistant Hydraulically Interconnected Suspension

    Transient handling analyses of a sport utility vehicle (SUV) fitted with a roll-resistant hydraulically interconnected suspension is presented in this paper. SUVs have a greater likelihood to rollover due to higher center of gravity, and hydraulically interconnected suspensions (HIS) have been proven as one practical means to effectively improve vehicle anti-roll ability. The modeling of a vehicle fitted with a HIS consists of a 9 degrees-of-freedom (DOF) full-car model and a 34 DOF HIS model, dynamically coupled together through boundary conditions. Steering angle taken from the tests is used as input to the simulations. In field tests, vehicles with different anti-roll systems are put under test by driving through a series of pylons at a constant speed. Acceleration, pressure and displacement transducers are used to measure and evaluate vehicles performance. From tests, HIS shows a superior performance over anti-roll bars in resisting vehicle rolls. The pressure response of the hydraulic suspension closely matches the simulation results, and discussions are provided afterwards

    Installation of insecticide-treated durable wall lining: evaluation of attachment materials and product durability under field conditions.

    BACKGROUND: Insecticide-treated durable wall lining (DL) is a new method of vector control designed to supplement LLINs and overcome two inherent limitations of LLINs and IRS: nightly behavioural compliance and short residual activity, respectively. DL is a deltamethrin-treated polyethylene material, which when used to cover interior house walls, functions as long-lasting IRS. Because the DL concept anticipates minimal upkeep, a primary challenge is how to guarantee correct household installation and in situ longevity for several years. Field trials were undertaken on various wall surfaces in Ghana to identify a logistically feasible, durable and re-usable method for DL wall attachment and to pilot new methods for assessing DL durability. METHODS: Over fifty-five candidate attachment or fixing products, including mechanical fasteners, material anchors and adhesives, were evaluated for their ability to tolerate static loads (simulating long-term installation) and short-term heavy weights (imitating shock damage). Attachment products were also scored using qualitative logistical and feasibility criteria, including ease of preparation, grip of fixing to DL and possibility of re-use. RESULTS: The stress tests provided a standardised, reproducible and reliable system for assessing fixing effectiveness and DL durability, with 64% (14/22) of adhesives and 15% (2/13) of mechanical fasteners failing to meet the minimum requirements of attaching DL to mud walls for set time periods. For most fixings, less outward load (0.2-8.0 kg) was required to detach DL from the wall, compared to downward load (0.2-19.2 kg). Fixings were better able to grip DL onto concrete than clay surfaces. Using a plastic nail cap to increase DL attachment area greatly improved grip and outward load tolerance, more so than varying nail size, length or texture. CONCLUSIONS: Based on a series of systematic stress tests, optimized fixing products for polyethylene DL wall attachment were identified. In parallel, a detailed and adaptable method of DL household installation was developed for routine deployment in malaria endemic areas. These standardized stress tests will form the basis for comparative evaluations of new types of DL textile, which incorporate non-pyrethroid insecticides to control malaria transmitted by resistant mosquito populations

    Experimental study of sandwich structures as armour against medium-velocity impacts

    An experimental impact study has been conducted on sandwich structures to identify and improve armour solutions for aeronautical applications. The objectives are to find the best configurations, i.e. the non-perforated targets with the minimal weight and back deformations. Medium-velocity impacts (120 m/s) have been conducted using a 127 g spherical projectile. The targets are simply supported at the rear of the structure. Two potential choices of front skin have been identified for the sandwich structure: 3 mm thick AA5086-H111 aluminium plates and dry aramid stitched fabrics (between 8 and 18 plies). The dry stitched fabrics appear to be an original solution, which associates a lightweight structure and a good perforation resistance. Moreover, a strong coupling has been found between the front skin and the core. The impact tests indicate that aluminium honeycomb core associated with aluminium skins show mitigated results. However, the combination of dry fabric front skin and aluminium honeycomb show better performances than aluminium sandwiches, with a global weight decrease
