    Get PDF
This reprint focuses on the application of the combination of synthetic aperture radars and depth learning technology. It aims to further promote the development of SAR image intelligent interpretation technology. A synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is an important active microwave imaging sensor, whose all-day and all-weather working capacity give it an important place in the remote sensing community. Since the United States launched the first SAR satellite, SAR has received much attention in the remote sensing community, e.g., in geological exploration, topographic mapping, disaster forecast, and traffic monitoring. It is valuable and meaningful, therefore, to study SAR-based remote sensing applications. In recent years, deep learning represented by convolution neural networks has promoted significant progress in the computer vision community, e.g., in face recognition, the driverless field and Internet of things (IoT). Deep learning can enable computational models with multiple processing layers to learn data representations with multiple-level abstractions. This can greatly improve the performance of various applications. This reprint provides a platform for researchers to handle the above significant challenges and present their innovative and cutting-edge research results when applying deep learning to SAR in various manuscript types, e.g., articles, letters, reviews and technical reports

Semantic segmentation (classification) of Earth Observation imagery is a crucial task in remote sensing. This paper presents a comprehensive review of technical factors to consider when designing neural networks for this purpose. The review focuses on Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs), Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs), and transformer models, discussing prominent design patterns for these ANN families and their implications for semantic segmentation. Common pre-processing techniques for ensuring optimal data preparation are also covered. These include methods for image normalization and chipping, as well as strategies for addressing data imbalance in training samples, and techniques for overcoming limited data, including augmentation techniques, transfer learning, and domain adaptation. By encompassing both the technical aspects of neural network design and the data-related considerations, this review provides researchers and practitioners with a comprehensive and up-to-date understanding of the factors involved in designing effective neural networks for semantic segmentation of Earth Observation imagery.Comment: 145 pages with 32 figure

Object detection, as of one the most fundamental and challenging problems in computer vision, has received great attention in recent years. Its development in the past two decades can be regarded as an epitome of computer vision history. If we think of today's object detection as a technical aesthetics under the power of deep learning, then turning back the clock 20 years we would witness the wisdom of cold weapon era. This paper extensively reviews 400+ papers of object detection in the light of its technical evolution, spanning over a quarter-century's time (from the 1990s to 2019). A number of topics have been covered in this paper, including the milestone detectors in history, detection datasets, metrics, fundamental building blocks of the detection system, speed up techniques, and the recent state of the art detection methods. This paper also reviews some important detection applications, such as pedestrian detection, face detection, text detection, etc, and makes an in-deep analysis of their challenges as well as technical improvements in recent years.Comment: This work has been submitted to the IEEE TPAMI for possible publicatio

Learnable Reconstruction Methods from RGB Images to Hyperspectral Imaging: A Survey

Hyperspectral imaging enables versatile applications due to its competence in capturing abundant spatial and spectral information, which are crucial for identifying substances. However, the devices for acquiring hyperspectral images are expensive and complicated. Therefore, many alternative spectral imaging methods have been proposed by directly reconstructing the hyperspectral information from lower-cost, more available RGB images. We present a thorough investigation of these state-of-the-art spectral reconstruction methods from the widespread RGB images. A systematic study and comparison of more than 25 methods has revealed that most of the data-driven deep learning methods are superior to prior-based methods in terms of reconstruction accuracy and quality despite lower speeds. This comprehensive review can serve as a fruitful reference source for peer researchers, thus further inspiring future development directions in related domains

Precise Ship Location With CNN Filter Selection From Optical Aerial Images

This paper presents a method that can be used for the efficient detection of small maritime objects. The proposed method employs aerial images in the visible spectrum as inputs to train a categorical convolutional neural network for the classification of ships. A subset of those filters that make the greatest contribution to the classification of the target class is selected from the inner layers of the CNN. The gradients with respect to the input image are then calculated on these filters, which are subsequently normalized and combined. Thresholding and a morphological operation are then applied in order to eventually obtain the localization. One of the advantages of the proposed approach with regard to previous object detection methods is that it is only required to label a few images with bounding boxes of the targets to be trained for localization. The method was evaluated with an extended version of the MASATI (MAritime SATellite Imagery) dataset. This new dataset has more than 7 000 images, 4 157 of which contain ships. Using only 14 training images, the proposed approach achieves better results for small targets than other well-known object detection methods, which also require many more training images. This work was supported in part by the Spanish Government's Ministry of Economy, Industry, and Competitiveness under Project RTC-2014-1863-8, and in part by the Babcock MCS Spain under Project INAER4-14Y (IDI-20141234)

Advances in Object and Activity Detection in Remote Sensing Imagery

The recent revolution in deep learning has enabled considerable development in the fields of object and activity detection. Visual object detection tries to find objects of target classes with precise localisation in an image and assign each object instance a corresponding class label. At the same time, activity recognition aims to determine the actions or activities of an agent or group of agents based on sensor or video observation data. It is a very important and challenging problem to detect, identify, track, and understand the behaviour of objects through images and videos taken by various cameras. Together, objects and their activity recognition in imaging data captured by remote sensing platforms is a highly dynamic and challenging research topic. During the last decade, there has been significant growth in the number of publications in the field of object and activity recognition. In particular, many researchers have proposed application domains to identify objects and their specific behaviours from air and spaceborne imagery. This Special Issue includes papers that explore novel and challenging topics for object and activity detection in remote sensing images and videos acquired by diverse platforms

EMC2A-Net: An Efficient Multibranch Cross-channel Attention Network for SAR Target Classification

In recent years, convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have shown great potential in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) target recognition. SAR images have a strong sense of granularity and have different scales of texture features, such as speckle noise, target dominant scatterers and target contours, which are rarely considered in the traditional CNN model. This paper proposed two residual blocks, namely EMC2A blocks with multiscale receptive fields(RFs), based on a multibranch structure and then designed an efficient isotopic architecture deep CNN (DCNN), EMC2A-Net. EMC2A blocks utilize parallel dilated convolution with different dilation rates, which can effectively capture multiscale context features without significantly increasing the computational burden. To further improve the efficiency of multiscale feature fusion, this paper proposed a multiscale feature cross-channel attention module, namely the EMC2A module, adopting a local multiscale feature interaction strategy without dimensionality reduction. This strategy adaptively adjusts the weights of each channel through efficient one-dimensional (1D)-circular convolution and sigmoid function to guide attention at the global channel wise level. The comparative results on the MSTAR dataset show that EMC2A-Net outperforms the existing available models of the same type and has relatively lightweight network structure. The ablation experiment results show that the EMC2A module significantly improves the performance of the model by using only a few parameters and appropriate cross-channel interactions.Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures, Submitted to IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing, 202

Very High Resolution (VHR) Satellite Imagery: Processing and Applications

    Get PDF
Recently, growing interest in the use of remote sensing imagery has appeared to provide synoptic maps of water quality parameters in coastal and inner water ecosystems;, monitoring of complex land ecosystems for biodiversity conservation; precision agriculture for the management of soils, crops, and pests; urban planning; disaster monitoring, etc. However, for these maps to achieve their full potential, it is important to engage in periodic monitoring and analysis of multi-temporal changes. In this context, very high resolution (VHR) satellite-based optical, infrared, and radar imaging instruments provide reliable information to implement spatially-based conservation actions. Moreover, they enable observations of parameters of our environment at greater broader spatial and finer temporal scales than those allowed through field observation alone. In this sense, recent very high resolution satellite technologies and image processing algorithms present the opportunity to develop quantitative techniques that have the potential to improve upon traditional techniques in terms of cost, mapping fidelity, and objectivity. Typical applications include multi-temporal classification, recognition and tracking of specific patterns, multisensor data fusion, analysis of land/marine ecosystem processes and environment monitoring, etc. This book aims to collect new developments, methodologies, and applications of very high resolution satellite data for remote sensing. The works selected provide to the research community the most recent advances on all aspects of VHR satellite remote sensing
