Joint Material and Illumination Estimation from Photo Sets in the Wild
Faithful manipulation of shape, material, and illumination in 2D Internet
images would greatly benefit from a reliable factorization of appearance into
material (i.e., diffuse and specular) and illumination (i.e., environment
maps). On the one hand, current methods that produce very high fidelity
results, typically require controlled settings, expensive devices, or
significant manual effort. To the other hand, methods that are automatic and
work on 'in the wild' Internet images, often extract only low-frequency
lighting or diffuse materials. In this work, we propose to make use of a set of
photographs in order to jointly estimate the non-diffuse materials and sharp
lighting in an uncontrolled setting. Our key observation is that seeing
multiple instances of the same material under different illumination (i.e.,
environment), and different materials under the same illumination provide
valuable constraints that can be exploited to yield a high-quality solution
(i.e., specular materials and environment illumination) for all the observed
materials and environments. Similar constraints also arise when observing
multiple materials in a single environment, or a single material across
multiple environments. The core of this approach is an optimization procedure
that uses two neural networks that are trained on synthetic images to predict
good gradients in parametric space given observation of reflected light. We
evaluate our method on a range of synthetic and real examples to generate
high-quality estimates, qualitatively compare our results against
state-of-the-art alternatives via a user study, and demonstrate
photo-consistent image manipulation that is otherwise very challenging to
achieve
Mobile Wound Assessment and 3D Modeling from a Single Image
The prevalence of camera-enabled mobile phones have made mobile wound assessment a viable treatment option for millions of previously difficult to reach patients. We have designed a complete mobile wound assessment platform to ameliorate the many challenges related to chronic wound care. Chronic wounds and infections are the most severe, costly and fatal types of wounds, placing them at the center of mobile wound assessment. Wound physicians assess thousands of single-view wound images from all over the world, and it may be difficult to determine the location of the wound on the body, for example, if the wound is taken at close range. In our solution, end-users capture an image of the wound by taking a picture with their mobile camera. The wound image is segmented and classified using modern convolution neural networks, and is stored securely in the cloud for remote tracking. We use an interactive semi-automated approach to allow users to specify the location of the wound on the body. To accomplish this we have created, to the best our knowledge, the first 3D human surface anatomy labeling system, based off the current NYU and Anatomy Mapper labeling systems. To interactively view wounds in 3D, we have presented an efficient projective texture mapping algorithm for texturing wounds onto a 3D human anatomy model. In so doing, we have demonstrated an approach to 3D wound reconstruction that works even for a single wound image

Although the widespread use of gaming for leisure purposes has been well documented, the use of games to support cultural heritage purposes, such as historical teaching and learning, or for enhancing museum visits, has been less well considered. The state-of-the-art in serious game technology is identical to that of the state-of-the-art in entertainment games technology. As a result, the field of serious heritage games concerns itself with recent advances in computer games, real-time computer graphics, virtual and augmented reality and artificial intelligence. On the other hand, the main strengths of serious gaming applications may be generalised as being in the areas of communication, visual expression of information, collaboration mechanisms, interactivity and entertainment. In this report, we will focus on the state-of-the-art with respect to the theories, methods and technologies used in serious heritage games. We provide an overview of existing literature of relevance to the domain, discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the described methods and point out unsolved problems and challenges. In addition, several case studies illustrating the application of methods and technologies used in cultural heritage are presented

Accelerated volumetric reconstruction from uncalibrated camera views
While both work with images, computer graphics and computer vision are inverse problems. Computer graphics starts traditionally with input geometric models and produces image sequences. Computer vision starts with input image sequences and produces geometric models. In the last few years, there has been a convergence of research to bridge the gap between the two fields.
This convergence has produced a new field called Image-based Rendering and Modeling (IBMR). IBMR represents the effort of using the geometric information recovered from real images to generate new images with the hope that the synthesized
ones appear photorealistic, as well as reducing the time spent on model creation.
In this dissertation, the capturing, geometric and photometric aspects of an IBMR system are studied. A versatile framework was developed that enables the reconstruction of scenes from images acquired with a handheld digital camera. The proposed system targets applications in areas such as Computer Gaming and Virtual Reality, from a lowcost perspective. In the spirit of IBMR, the human operator is allowed to provide the high-level information, while underlying algorithms are used to perform low-level computational work. Conforming to the latest architecture trends, we propose a streaming voxel carving method, allowing a fast GPU-based processing on commodity hardware

A new stage of computing technology at the beginning of the 21st Century links the personal and the pervasive through mobile wearables. The convergence between the miniaturisation of microchips (nanotechnology), intelligent textile or interfacial materials production, advances in biotechnology and the growth of wireless, ubiquitous computing emphasises not only mobility but integration into clothing or the human body. In artistic contexts one expects such integrated wearable devices to have the two-way function of interface instruments (e.g. sensor data acquisition and exchange) worn for particular purposes, either for communication with the environment or various aesthetic and compositional expressions. 'Wearable performance' briefly surveys the context for wearables in the performance arts and distinguishes display and performative/interfacial garments. It then focuses on the authors' experiments with 'design in motion' and digital performance, examining prototyping at the DAP-Lab which involves transdisciplinary convergences between fashion and dance, interactive system architecture, electronic textiles, wearable technologies and digital animation. The concept of an 'evolving' garment design that is materialised (mobilised) in live performance between partners originates from DAP Lab's work with telepresence and distributed media addressing the 'connective tissues' and 'wearabilities' of projected bodies through a study of shared embodiment and perception/proprioception in the wearer (tactile sensory processing). Such notions of wearability are applied both to the immediate sensory processing on the performer's body and to the processing of the responsive, animate environment. A mixed reality telepresence system for collaborative space operation
This paper presents a Mixed Reality system that results from the integration of a telepresence system and an application to improve collaborative space exploration. The system combines free viewpoint video with immersive projection technology to support non-verbal communication, including eye gaze, inter-personal distance and facial expression. Importantly, these can be interpreted together as people move around the simulation, maintaining natural social distance. The application is a simulation of Mars, within which the collaborators must come to agreement over, for example, where the Rover should land and go.
The first contribution is the creation of a Mixed Reality system supporting contextualization of non-verbal communication. Tw technological contributions are prototyping a technique to subtract a person from a background that may contain physical objects and/or moving images, and a light weight texturing method for multi-view rendering which provides balance in terms of visual and temporal quality. A practical contribution is the demonstration of pragmatic approaches to sharing space between display systems of distinct levels of immersion. A research tool contribution is a system that allows comparison of conventional authored and video based reconstructed avatars, within an environment that encourages exploration and social interaction. Aspects of system quality, including the communication of facial expression and end-to-end latency are reported
Design of Immersive Online Hotel Walkthrough System Using Image-Based (Concentric Mosaics) Rendering
Conventional hotel booking websites only represents their services in 2D photos to show
their facilities. 2D photos are just static photos that cannot be move and rotate. Imagebased
virtual walkthrough for the hospitality industry is a potential technology to attract
more customers. In this project, a research will be carried out to create an Image-based
rendering (IBR) virtual walkthrough and panoramic-based walkthrough by using only
Macromedia Flash Professional 8, Photovista Panorama 3.0 and Reality Studio for the
interaction of the images. The web-based of the image-based are using the Macromedia
Dreamweaver Professional 8. The images will be displayed in Adobe Flash Player 8 or
higher. In making image-based walkthrough, a concentric mosaic technique is used
while image mosaicing technique is applied in panoramic-based walkthrough. A
comparison of the both walkthrough is compared. The study is also focus on the
comparison between number of pictures and smoothness of the walkthrough. There are
advantages of using different techniques such as image-based walkthrough is a real time
walkthrough since the user can walk around right, left, forward and backward whereas
the panoramic-based cannot experience real time walkthrough because the user can only
view 360 degrees from a fixed spot
