    Content source selection in Bluetooth networks

    Large scale market penetration of electronic devices equipped with Bluetooth technology now gives the ability to share content (such as music or video clips) between members of the public in a decentralised manner. Achieved using opportunistic connections, formed when they are colocated, in environments where Internet connectivity is expensive or unreliable, such as urban buses, train rides and coffee shops. Most people have a high degree of regularity in their movements (such as a daily commute), including repeated contacts with others possessing similar seasonal movement patterns. We argue that this behaviour can be exploited in connection selection, and outline a system for the identification of long-term companions and sources that have previously provided quality content, in order to maximise the successful receipt of content files. We utilise actual traces and existing mobility models to validate our approach, and show how consideration of the colocation history and the quality of previous data transfers leads to more successful sharing of content in realistic scenarios

    Adoption of vehicular ad hoc networking protocols by networked robots

    This paper focuses on the utilization of wireless networking in the robotics domain. Many researchers have already equipped their robots with wireless communication capabilities, stimulated by the observation that multi-robot systems tend to have several advantages over their single-robot counterparts. Typically, this integration of wireless communication is tackled in a quite pragmatic manner, only a few authors presented novel Robotic Ad Hoc Network (RANET) protocols that were designed specifically with robotic use cases in mind. This is in sharp contrast with the domain of vehicular ad hoc networks (VANET). This observation is the starting point of this paper. If the results of previous efforts focusing on VANET protocols could be reused in the RANET domain, this could lead to rapid progress in the field of networked robots. To investigate this possibility, this paper provides a thorough overview of the related work in the domain of robotic and vehicular ad hoc networks. Based on this information, an exhaustive list of requirements is defined for both types. It is concluded that the most significant difference lies in the fact that VANET protocols are oriented towards low throughput messaging, while RANET protocols have to support high throughput media streaming as well. Although not always with equal importance, all other defined requirements are valid for both protocols. This leads to the conclusion that cross-fertilization between them is an appealing approach for future RANET research. To support such developments, this paper concludes with the definition of an appropriate working plan

    Quality of Service-Based Medium Access Control Mechanism for Multimedia Traffic in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks

    This thesis describes an investigation on the problem of quality of service (QoS) support in mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs). The decentralized nature of wireless ad hoc networks makes them suitable for a variety of applications where central nodes cannot be relied on. This thesis presents a medium access control (MAC) QoS mechanism for multimedia applications in IEEE 802.11e based MANETs. IEEE 802.11e standard draft includes new features to facilitate and promote the provision of QoS guarantees in wireless networks with a long-term solution based on QoS-architectures. The motivation is driven by the need to support increasing demand of time-sensitive applications such as Voice over IP (VoIP) and video conferencing applications. IEEE 802.11e enhances the Distributed Coordination Function (DCF) and the Point Coordination Function (PCF) of the legacy IEEE 802.11, through a new coordination function: the Hybrid Coordination Function (HCF). Within the HCF, there are two methods of channel access: HCF Controlled Channel Access (HCCA) and Enhanced Distributed Channel Access (EDCA). EDCA operates in infrastructure-less ad hoc mode and is widely used in MANETs, unlike HCCA, which further assures QoS provisioning operates in infrastructure mode in the presence of access points (AP). Recent researches showed that EDCA lacks QoS support of real-time traffic in MANETs due to its contention based medium access method. This thesis takes HCCA QoS provisioning potentials to MANETs by implementing a MAC mechanism in which HCCA is employed on top of EDCA to work in infrastructure-less environment like MANET with the help of multiple channels. The mechanism dedicates a unique receiver-based channel to every mobile node. It will act as virtual hybrid coordinator (VHC) to exercise control over the channel in contention-free manner while maintaining a common channel in which all mobile nodes can exchange broadcast and routing related messages. The mechanism can be easily integrated with existing 802.11 systems without modification to existing protocols while ensuring a level of admission control and resource reservation over the medium. Simulation results indicate that the mechanism significantly improves the overall network throughput by 20% at the saturation point and improves average delay by 20% at the saturation point compared to pure EDCA with or without multiple channels. Even with multi-channel EDCA, our mechanism guarantees better performance in terms of throughput and MAC delay for high priority traffic in MANET. The research contribution on MAC layer can be integrated into a larger framework for QoS support in MANETs, which opens a wide range of further research in QoS provisioning in MANETs and solve QoS multi-layer design and implementation issues

    Integrated Architecture for Configuration and Service Management in MANET Environments

    Esta tesis nos ha permitido trasladar algunos conceptos teóricos de la computación ubicua a escenarios reales, identificando las necesidades específicas de diferentes tipos de aplicaciones. Con el fin de alcanzar este objetivo, proponemos dos prototipos que proporcionan servicios sensibles al contexto en diferentes entornos, tales como conferencias o salas de recuperación en hospitales. Estos prototipos experimentales explotan la tecnología Bluetooth para ofrecer información basada en las preferencias del usuario. En ambos casos, hemos llevado a cabo algunos experimentos con el fin de evaluar el comportamiento de los sistemas y su rendimento. También abordamos en esta tesis el problema de la autoconfiguración de redes MANET basadas en el estándar 802.11 a través de dos soluciones novedosas. La primera es una solución centralizada que se basa en la tecnología Bluetooth, mientras la segunda es una solución distribuida que no necesita recurrir a ninguna tecnología adicional, ya que se basa en el uso del parámetro SSID. Ambos métodos se han diseñado para permitir que usuarios no expertos puedan unirse a una red MANET de forma transparente, proporcionando una configuración automática, rápida, y fiable de los terminales. Los resultados experimentales en implementaciones reales nos han permitido evaluar el rendimiento de las soluciones propuestas y demostrar que las estaciones cercanas se pueden configurar en pocos segundos. Además, hemos comparado ambas soluciones entre sí para poner de manifiesto las diferentes ventajas y desventajas en cuanto a rendimento.     'Real' Nature, 'Aesthetic' Nature and the Making of Artworks: Some Challenges of Cross-Cultural Collaboration

    The social and educational benefits of cultural exchange within the realm of art are often asserted. However, what of the meaning and value of the actual artworks arising from those exchanges? This paper analyses the barriers to shared understanding that arose in relation to an extended exchange between Japanese and British artists and philosophers on the connection between Nature and Art, 2011-13. First, cultural interfacing is explored in relation to four types– combinatorial, hierarchic, hermeneutic, and thematic – and the case is made that communalities of practice alone cannot guarantee true cultural integration or understanding. Next, six Japanese and Western concepts of ‘Nature’ – as an ontological entity, a class of objects, a domain, a force, a system and an Ideal - are distinguished in relation to the history and beliefs of those cultures. The argument then moves to the interface between Art and Nature: Nature can be the subject of Art, but can it literally be its content? Finally, the relationship between culture and theory is itself explored in relation to two artworks, and their supposed meanings and links.     A Fuzzy Based Distributed Algorithm for Maintaining Connected Network Topology in Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks Considering Freeway Mobility Model

    Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks (MANETs) present real-time embedded system that is being used in a wide variety of applications where traditional networking infrastructure is practically infeasible. The highly dynamic character of a Mobile Ad-Hoc Network (MANET) poses significant challenges on network communications. Previous work on MANET has resulted in numerous routing protocols aiming to maintain network connectivity among the active nodes. This paper presents a fuzzy-based distributed algorithm to maintain connected MANET considering freeway mobility model. According to the algorithm, each node will control itself in a way that it can maintain its connectivity with other nodes. In this approach each node is enabled with a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver. Through GPS each and every node is getting its position and velocity. After getting the information all the nodes in a network transmit their position and velocity information periodically. Obtaining information from all other nodes, each node will decide its own velocity to maintain connectivity. Moreover, faults to a particular node have also been considered in this algorithm. Results obtained through simulation studies show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm
