    dissertationVolumetric parameterization is an emerging field in computer graphics, where volumetric representations that have a semi-regular tensor-product structure are desired in applications such as three-dimensional (3D) texture mapping and physically-based simulation. At the same time, volumetric parameterization is also needed in the Isogeometric Analysis (IA) paradigm, which uses the same parametric space for representing geometry, simulation attributes and solutions. One of the main advantages of the IA framework is that the user gets feedback directly as attributes of the NURBS model representation, which can represent geometry exactly, avoiding both the need to generate a finite element mesh and the need to reverse engineer the simulation results from the finite element mesh back into the model. Research in this area has largely been concerned with issues of the quality of the analysis and simulation results assuming the existence of a high quality volumetric NURBS model that is appropriate for simulation. However, there are currently no generally applicable approaches to generating such a model or visualizing the higher order smooth isosurfaces of the simulation attributes, either as a part of current Computer Aided Design or Reverse Engineering systems and methodologies. Furthermore, even though the mesh generation pipeline is circumvented in the concept of IA, the quality of the model still significantly influences the analysis result. This work presents a pipeline to create, analyze and visualize NURBS geometries. Based on the concept of analysis-aware modeling, this work focusses in particular on methodologies to decompose a volumetric domain into simpler pieces based on appropriate midstructures by respecting other relevant interior material attributes. The domain is decomposed such that a tensor-product style parameterization can be established on the subvolumes, where the parameterization matches along subvolume boundaries. The volumetric parameterization is optimized using gradient-based nonlinear optimization algorithms and datafitting methods are introduced to fit trivariate B-splines to the parameterized subvolumes with guaranteed order of accuracy. Then, a visualization method is proposed allowing to directly inspect isosurfaces of attributes, such as the results of analysis, embedded in the NURBS geometry. Finally, the various methodologies proposed in this work are demonstrated on complex representations arising in practice and research

    A Parametrization-Based Surface Reconstruction System for Triangular Mesh Simplification with Application to Large Scale Scenes

    The laser scanner is nowadays widely used to capture the geometry of art, animation maquettes, or large architectural, industrial, and land form models. It thus poses specific problems depending on the model scale. This thesis provides a solution for simplification of triangulated data and for surface reconstruction of large data sets, where feature edges provide an obvious segmentation structure. It also explores a new method for model segmentation, with the goal of applying multiresolution techniques to data sets characterized by curvy areas and the lack of clear demarcation features. The preliminary stage of surface segmentation, which takes as input single or multiple scan data files, generates surface patches which are processed independently. The surface components are mapped onto a two-dimensional domain with boundary constraints, using a novel parametrization weight coefficient. This stage generates valid parameter domain points, which can be fed as arguments to parametric modeling functions or surface approximation schemes. On this domain, our approach explores two types of remeshing. First, we generate points in a regular grid pattern, achieving multiresolution through a flexible grid step, which nevertheless is designed to produce a globally uniform resampling aspect. In this case, for reconstruction, we attempt to solve the open problem of border reconciliation across adjacent domains by retriangulating the border gap between the grid and the fixed irregular border. Alternatively, we straighten the domain borders in the parameter domain and coarsely triangulate the resulting simplified polygons, resampling the base domain triangles in a 1-4 subdivision pattern, achieving multiresolution from the number of subdivision steps. For mesh reconstruction, we use a linear interpolation method based on the original mesh triangles as control points on local planes, using a saved triangle correspondence between the original mesh and the parametric domain. We also use a region-wide approximation method, applied to the parameter grid points, which first generates data-trained control points, and then uses them to obtain the reconstruction values at the resamples. In the grid resampling scheme, due to the border constraints, the reassembly of the segmented, sequentially processed data sets is seamless. In the subdivision scheme, we align adjacent border fragments in the parameter space, and use a region-to-fragment map to achieve the same border reconstruction across two neighboring components. We successfully process data sets up to 1,000,000 points in one pass of our program, and are capable of assembling larger scenes from sequential runs. Our program consists of a single run, without intermediate storage. Where we process large input data files, we fragment the input using a nested application of our segmentation algorithm to reduce the size of the input scenes, and our pipeline reassembles the reconstruction output from multiple data files into a unique view

    Invariant Reconstruction of Curves and Surfaces with Discontinuities with Applications in Computer Vision

    The reconstruction of curves and surfaces from sparse data is an important task in many applications. In computer vision problems the reconstructed curves and surfaces generally represent some physical property of a real object in a scene. For instance, the sparse data that is collected may represent locations along the boundary between an object and a background. It may be desirable to reconstruct the complete boundary from this sparse data. Since the curves and surfaces represent physical properties, the characteristics of the reconstruction process differs from straight forward fitting of smooth curves and surfaces to a set of data in two important areas. First, since the collected data is represented in an arbitrarily chosen coordinate system, the reconstruction process should be invariant to the choice of the coordinate system (except for the transformation between the two coordinate systems). Secondly, in many reconstruction applications the curve or surface that is being represented may be discontinuous. For example in the object recognition problem if the object is a box there is a discontinuity in the boundary curve at the comer of the box. The reconstruction problem will be cast as an ill-posed inverse problem which must be stabilized using a priori information relative to the constraint formation. Tikhonov regularization is used to form a well posed mathematical problem statement and conditions for an invariant reconstruction are given. In the case where coordinate system invariance is incorporated into the problem, the resulting functional minimization problems are shown to be nonconvex. To form a valid convex approximation to the invariant functional minimization problem a two step algorithm is proposed. The first step forms an approximation to the curve (surface) which is piecewise linear (planar). This approximation is used to estimate curve (surface) characteristics which are then used to form an approximation of the nonconvex functional with a convex functional. Several example applications in computer vision for which the invariant property is important are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the algorithms. To incorporate the fact that the curves and surfaces may have discontinuities the minimizing functional is modified. An important property of the resulting functional minimization problems is that convexity is maintained. Therefore, the computational complexity of the resulting algorithms are not significantly increased. Examples are provided to demonstrate the characteristics of the algorithm

    High-order adaptive methods for computing invariant manifolds of maps

    The author presents efficient and accurate numerical methods for computing invariant manifolds of maps which arise in the study of dynamical systems. In order to decrease the number of points needed to compute a given curve/surface, he proposes using higher-order interpolation/approximation techniques from geometric modeling. He uses B´ezier curves/triangles, fundamental objects in curve/surface design, to create adaptive methods. The methods are based on tolerance conditions derived from properties of B´ezier curves/triangles. The author develops and tests the methods for an ordinary parametric curve; then he adapts these methods to invariant manifolds of planar maps. Next, he develops and tests the method for parametric surfaces and then he adapts this method to invariant manifolds of three-dimensional maps
