Nanostructure-modulated planar high spectral resolution spectro-polarimeter
We present a planar spectro-polarimeter based on Fabry-P{\'e}rot cavities
with embedded polarization-sensitive high-index nanostructures. A
m-thick spectro-polarimetric system for 3 spectral bands and 2 linear
polarization states is experimentally demonstrated. Furthermore, an optimal
design is theoretically proposed, estimating that a system with a bandwidth of
127~nm and a spectral resolution of 1~nm is able to reconstruct the first three
Stokes parameters \textcolor{black}{with a signal-to-noise ratio of -13.14~dB
with respect to the the shot noise limited SNR}. The pixelated
spectro-polarimetric system can be directly integrated on a sensor, thus
enabling applicability in a variety of miniaturized optical devices, including
but not limited to satellites for Earth observation
Linear Differential Constraints for Photo-polarimetric Height Estimation
In this paper we present a differential approach to photo-polarimetric shape
estimation. We propose several alternative differential constraints based on
polarisation and photometric shading information and show how to express them
in a unified partial differential system. Our method uses the image ratios
technique to combine shading and polarisation information in order to directly
reconstruct surface height, without first computing surface normal vectors.
Moreover, we are able to remove the non-linearities so that the problem reduces
to solving a linear differential problem. We also introduce a new method for
estimating a polarisation image from multichannel data and, finally, we show it
is possible to estimate the illumination directions in a two source setup,
extending the method into an uncalibrated scenario. From a numerical point of
view, we use a least-squares formulation of the discrete version of the
problem. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work to consider a
unified differential approach to solve photo-polarimetric shape estimation
directly for height. Numerical results on synthetic and real-world data confirm
the effectiveness of our proposed method.Comment: To appear at International Conference on Computer Vision (ICCV),

Mapping photopolarimeter spectrometer instrument feasibility study for future planetary flight missions
Evaluations are summarized directed towards defining optimal instrumentation for performing planetary polarization measurements from a spacecraft platform. An overview of the science rationale for polarimetric measurements is given to point out the importance of such measurements for future studies and exploration of the outer planets. The key instrument features required to perform the needed measurements are discussed and applied to the requirements for the Cassini mission to Saturn. The resultant conceptual design of a spectro-polarimeter photometer for Cassini is described in detail
Sparse ellipsometry: portable acquisition of polarimetric SVBRDF and shape with unstructured flash photography
Ellipsometry techniques allow to measure polarization information of materials, requiring precise rotations of optical components with different configurations of lights and sensors. This results in cumbersome capture devices, carefully calibrated in lab conditions, and in very long acquisition times, usually in the order of a few days per object. Recent techniques allow to capture polarimetric spatially-varying reflectance information, but limited to a single view, or to cover all view directions, but limited to spherical objects made of a single homogeneous material. We present sparse ellipsometry, a portable polarimetric acquisition method that captures both polarimetric SVBRDF and 3D shape simultaneously. Our handheld device consists of off-the-shelf, fixed optical components. Instead of days, the total acquisition time varies between twenty and thirty minutes per object. We develop a complete polarimetric SVBRDF model that includes diffuse and specular components, as well as single scattering, and devise a novel polarimetric inverse rendering algorithm with data augmentation of specular reflection samples via generative modeling. Our results show a strong agreement with a recent ground-truth dataset of captured polarimetric BRDFs of real-world objects
