Symmetric measures via moments
Algebraic tools in statistics have recently been receiving special attention
and a number of interactions between algebraic geometry and computational
statistics have been rapidly developing. This paper presents another such
connection, namely, one between probabilistic models invariant under a finite
group of (non-singular) linear transformations and polynomials invariant under
the same group. Two specific aspects of the connection are discussed:
generalization of the (uniqueness part of the multivariate) problem of moments
and log-linear, or toric, modeling by expansion of invariant terms. A
distribution of minuscule subimages extracted from a large database of natural
images is analyzed to illustrate the above concepts.Comment: Published in at http://dx.doi.org/10.3150/07-BEJ6144 the Bernoulli

Braids of entangled particle trajectories
In many applications, the two-dimensional trajectories of fluid particles are
available, but little is known about the underlying flow. Oceanic floats are a
clear example. To extract quantitative information from such data, one can
measure single-particle dispersion coefficients, but this only uses one
trajectory at a time, so much of the information on relative motion is lost. In
some circumstances the trajectories happen to remain close long enough to
measure finite-time Lyapunov exponents, but this is rare. We propose to use
tools from braid theory and the topology of surface mappings to approximate the
topological entropy of the underlying flow. The procedure uses all the
trajectory data and is inherently global. The topological entropy is a measure
of the entanglement of the trajectories, and converges to zero if they are not
entangled in a complex manner (for instance, if the trajectories are all in a
large vortex). We illustrate the techniques on some simple dynamical systems
and on float data from the Labrador sea.Comment: 24 pages, 21 figures. PDFLaTeX with RevTeX4 macros. Matlab code

Minimization of entropy functionals
Entropy functionals (i.e. convex integral functionals) and extensions of
these functionals are minimized on convex sets. This paper is aimed at reducing
as much as possible the assumptions on the constraint set. Dual equalities and
characterizations of the minimizers are obtained with weak constraint

The paradigm of the area law and the structure of transversal and longitudinal lightfront degrees of freedom
It is shown that an algebraically defined holographic projection of a QFT
onto the lightfront changes the local quantum properties in a very drastic way.
The expected ubiquitous vacuum polarization characteristic of QFT is confined
to the lightray (longitudinal) direction, whereas operators whose localization
is transversely separated are completely free of vacuum correlations. This
unexpected ''transverse return to QM'' combined with the rather universal
nature of the strongly longitudinal correlated vacuum correlations (which turn
out to be described by rather kinematical chiral theories) leads to a d-2
dimensional area structure of the d-1 dimensional lightfront theory. An
additive transcription in terms of an appropriately defined entropy related to
the vacuum restricted to the horizon is proposed and its model independent
universality aspects which permit its interpretation as a quantum candidate for
Bekenstein's area law are discussed. The transverse tensor product foliation
structure of lightfront degrees of freedom is essential for the simplifying
aspects of the algebraic lightcone holography. Key-words: Quantum field theory;

Linguistics and some aspects of its underlying dynamics
In recent years, central components of a new approach to linguistics, the
Minimalist Program (MP) have come closer to physics. Features of the Minimalist
Program, such as the unconstrained nature of recursive Merge, the operation of
the Labeling Algorithm that only operates at the interface of Narrow Syntax
with the Conceptual-Intentional and the Sensory-Motor interfaces, the
difference between pronounced and un-pronounced copies of elements in a
sentence and the build-up of the Fibonacci sequence in the syntactic derivation
of sentence structures, are directly accessible to representation in terms of
algebraic formalism. Although in our scheme linguistic structures are classical
ones, we find that an interesting and productive isomorphism can be established
between the MP structure, algebraic structures and many-body field theory
opening new avenues of inquiry on the dynamics underlying some central aspects
of linguistics.Comment: 17 page
