    Set-Valued Return Function and Generalized Solutions for Multiobjective Optimal Control Problems (MOC)

    In this paper, we consider a multiobjective optimal control problem where the preference relation in the objective space is defined in terms of a pointed convex cone containing the origin, which defines generalized Pareto optimality. For this problem, we introduce the set-valued return function V and provide a unique characterization for V in terms of contingent derivative and coderivative for set-valued maps, which extends two previously introduced notions of generalized solution to the Hamilton-Jacobi equation for single objective optimal control problems.Comment: 29 pages, submitted to SICO

    A Convergent Approximation of the Pareto Optimal Set for Finite Horizon Multiobjective Optimal Control Problems (MOC) Using Viability Theory

    The objective of this paper is to provide a convergent numerical approximation of the Pareto optimal set for finite-horizon multiobjective optimal control problems for which the objective space is not necessarily convex. Our approach is based on Viability Theory. We first introduce the set-valued return function V and show that the epigraph of V is equal to the viability kernel of a properly chosen closed set for a properly chosen dynamics. We then introduce an approximate set-valued return function with finite set-values as the solution of a multiobjective dynamic programming equation. The epigraph of this approximate set-valued return function is shown to be equal to the finite discrete viability kernel resulting from the convergent numerical approximation of the viability kernel proposed in [4, 5]. As a result, the epigraph of the approximate set-valued return function converges towards the epigraph of V. The approximate set-valued return function finally provides the proposed numerical approximation of the Pareto optimal set for every initial time and state. Several numerical examples are provided

Em horizonte de tem po finito, apresentamos um a nova abordagem ao analisar problemas com objetivos de diferentes naturezas, que precisam ser minimizados simultaneamente. Um objetivo esta na forma clássica de Bolza e o outro e definido como um a funcão de maximo. Baseados na teoria de Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman caracterizamos a fronteira de Pareto fraca e a fronteira de Pareto para tais problemas. Prim eiram ente, definimos um problema de controle átim o auxiliar sem restricoes de estado e mostramos que a fronteira de Pareto fraca íe um subconjunto do conjunto de nível zero da funcao valor correspondente. Em seguida, com um a abordagem geometrica estabelecemos a caracterizaçao da fronteira de Pareto. Alguns resultados numericos sao considerados para m ostrar a relevancia do nosso metodo. Os bons resultados obtidos para horizonte de tem po finito nos m otivaram a investigar problemas de controle íotimo multiobjetivo com horizonte de tem po infinito. Com um a abordagem similar, caracterizamos a fronteira de Pareto para essa classe de problemas. Introduzimos um metodo, baseado no princípio da programacão dinamica, para reconstrucão de trajetorias de problemas de controle otimo com restricçoães de estado e horizonte de tem po infinito. A teoria íe aplicada em sistemas de gestãao de energia. Para problemas de energia simples, mas ainda representativos, que minimizam custo de geracao e emissão de CO2, comparamos a habilidade de diferentes baterias como substituto para o mecanismo de deslocamento de dem anda de ponta (load shaving). Com a resoluçcãao do problema multiobjetivo íe possível obter um a relaçcaão entre a minimizacao dos custos de geraçao de energia e de emissao de gás carbônico das usinas term oeletricas consideradas no modelo. A novel theory is developed for finite horizon problems w ith two objectives of different nature th a t need to be minimized simultaneously. One objective is in the classical Bolza form and the other one is defined as a maximum function. Based on the Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman framework we characterize the weak Pareto front and the Pareto front for such problems. First we define an auxiliary optim al control problem w ithout state constraints and show th a t the weak Pareto front is a subset of the zero level set of the corresponding value function. Then w ith a geometrical approach we establish a characterization of the Pareto front. Some numerical examples are considered to show the interest of our proposal. The encouraging results obtained with the finite horizon m otivated us to investigate infinite horizon multi-objective optim al control problems and characterize the corresponding Pareto front. Additionally, we introduce a m ethod, based on the dynamical programming principle, to reconstruct optim al trajectories for infinite horizon control problems w ith state constraints. The theory is applied to energy management systems. We compare the ability of different batteries as a substitute of the load shaving mechanism in smoothing the load peaks, for simple, yet representative, power mix systems w ith two different objectives. The multi-objective approach makes it possible to obtain a compromise between the minimization of generation costs and the carbon emissions of the therm al power plants in the mix.     Democratizing machine learning

    Modelle des maschinellen Lernens sind zunehmend in der Gesellschaft verankert, oft in Form von automatisierten Entscheidungsprozessen. Ein wesentlicher Grund dafür ist die verbesserte Zugänglichkeit von Daten, aber auch von Toolkits für maschinelles Lernen, die den Zugang zu Methoden des maschinellen Lernens für Nicht-Experten ermöglichen. Diese Arbeit umfasst mehrere Beiträge zur Demokratisierung des Zugangs zum maschinellem Lernen, mit dem Ziel, einem breiterem Publikum Zugang zu diesen Technologien zu er- möglichen. Die Beiträge in diesem Manuskript stammen aus mehreren Bereichen innerhalb dieses weiten Gebiets. Ein großer Teil ist dem Bereich des automatisierten maschinellen Lernens (AutoML) und der Hyperparameter-Optimierung gewidmet, mit dem Ziel, die oft mühsame Aufgabe, ein optimales Vorhersagemodell für einen gegebenen Datensatz zu finden, zu vereinfachen. Dieser Prozess besteht meist darin ein für vom Benutzer vorgegebene Leistungsmetrik(en) optimales Modell zu finden. Oft kann dieser Prozess durch Lernen aus vorhergehenden Experimenten verbessert oder beschleunigt werden. In dieser Arbeit werden drei solcher Methoden vorgestellt, die entweder darauf abzielen, eine feste Menge möglicher Hyperparameterkonfigurationen zu erhalten, die wahrscheinlich gute Lösungen für jeden neuen Datensatz enthalten, oder Eigenschaften der Datensätze zu nutzen, um neue Konfigurationen vorzuschlagen. Darüber hinaus wird eine Sammlung solcher erforderlichen Metadaten zu den Experimenten vorgestellt, und es wird gezeigt, wie solche Metadaten für die Entwicklung und als Testumgebung für neue Hyperparameter- Optimierungsmethoden verwendet werden können. Die weite Verbreitung von ML-Modellen in vielen Bereichen der Gesellschaft erfordert gleichzeitig eine genauere Untersuchung der Art und Weise, wie aus Modellen abgeleitete automatisierte Entscheidungen die Gesellschaft formen, und ob sie möglicherweise Individuen oder einzelne Bevölkerungsgruppen benachteiligen. In dieser Arbeit wird daher ein AutoML-Tool vorgestellt, das es ermöglicht, solche Überlegungen in die Suche nach einem optimalen Modell miteinzubeziehen. Diese Forderung nach Fairness wirft gleichzeitig die Frage auf, ob die Fairness eines Modells zuverlässig geschätzt werden kann, was in einem weiteren Beitrag in dieser Arbeit untersucht wird. Da der Zugang zu Methoden des maschinellen Lernens auch stark vom Zugang zu Software und Toolboxen abhängt, sind mehrere Beiträge in Form von Software Teil dieser Arbeit. Das R-Paket mlr3pipelines ermöglicht die Einbettung von Modellen in sogenan- nte Machine Learning Pipelines, die Vor- und Nachverarbeitungsschritte enthalten, die im maschinellen Lernen und AutoML häufig benötigt werden. Das mlr3fairness R-Paket hingegen ermöglicht es dem Benutzer, Modelle auf potentielle Benachteiligung hin zu über- prüfen und diese durch verschiedene Techniken zu reduzieren. Eine dieser Techniken, multi-calibration wurde darüberhinaus als seperate Software veröffentlicht.Machine learning artifacts are increasingly embedded in society, often in the form of automated decision-making processes. One major reason for this, along with methodological improvements, is the increasing accessibility of data but also machine learning toolkits that enable access to machine learning methodology for non-experts. The core focus of this thesis is exactly this – democratizing access to machine learning in order to enable a wider audience to benefit from its potential. Contributions in this manuscript stem from several different areas within this broader area. A major section is dedicated to the field of automated machine learning (AutoML) with the goal to abstract away the tedious task of obtaining an optimal predictive model for a given dataset. This process mostly consists of finding said optimal model, often through hyperparameter optimization, while the user in turn only selects the appropriate performance metric(s) and validates the resulting models. This process can be improved or sped up by learning from previous experiments. Three such methods one with the goal to obtain a fixed set of possible hyperparameter configurations that likely contain good solutions for any new dataset and two using dataset characteristics to propose new configurations are presented in this thesis. It furthermore presents a collection of required experiment metadata and how such meta-data can be used for the development and as a test bed for new hyperparameter optimization methods. The pervasion of models derived from ML in many aspects of society simultaneously calls for increased scrutiny with respect to how such models shape society and the eventual biases they exhibit. Therefore, this thesis presents an AutoML tool that allows incorporating fairness considerations into the search for an optimal model. This requirement for fairness simultaneously poses the question of whether we can reliably estimate a model’s fairness, which is studied in a further contribution in this thesis. Since access to machine learning methods also heavily depends on access to software and toolboxes, several contributions in the form of software are part of this thesis. The mlr3pipelines R package allows for embedding models in so-called machine learning pipelines that include pre- and postprocessing steps often required in machine learning and AutoML. The mlr3fairness R package on the other hand enables users to audit models for potential biases as well as reduce those biases through different debiasing techniques.     Self-adaptivity of applications on network on chip multiprocessors: the case of fault-tolerant Kahn process networks

    Technology scaling accompanied with higher operating frequencies and the ability to integrate more functionality in the same chip has been the driving force behind delivering higher performance computing systems at lower costs. Embedded computing systems, which have been riding the same wave of success, have evolved into complex architectures encompassing a high number of cores interconnected by an on-chip network (usually identified as Multiprocessor System-on-Chip). However these trends are hindered by issues that arise as technology scaling continues towards deep submicron scales. Firstly, growing complexity of these systems and the variability introduced by process technologies make it ever harder to perform a thorough optimization of the system at design time. Secondly, designers are faced with a reliability wall that emerges as age-related degradation reduces the lifetime of transistors, and as the probability of defects escaping post-manufacturing testing is increased. In this thesis, we take on these challenges within the context of streaming applications running in network-on-chip based parallel (not necessarily homogeneous) systems-on-chip that adopt the no-remote memory access model. In particular, this thesis tackles two main problems: (1) fault-aware online task remapping, (2) application-level self-adaptation for quality management. For the former, by viewing fault tolerance as a self-adaptation aspect, we adopt a cross-layer approach that aims at graceful performance degradation by addressing permanent faults in processing elements mostly at system-level, in particular by exploiting redundancy available in multi-core platforms. We propose an optimal solution based on an integer linear programming formulation (suitable for design time adoption) as well as heuristic-based solutions to be used at run-time. We assess the impact of our approach on the lifetime reliability. We propose two recovery schemes based on a checkpoint-and-rollback and a rollforward technique. For the latter, we propose two variants of a monitor-controller- adapter loop that adapts application-level parameters to meet performance goals. We demonstrate not only that fault tolerance and self-adaptivity can be achieved in embedded platforms, but also that it can be done without incurring large overheads. In addressing these problems, we present techniques which have been realized (depending on their characteristics) in the form of a design tool, a run-time library or a hardware core to be added to the basic architecture

    Fault Diagnosis Of Sensor And Actuator Faults In Multi-Zone Hvac Systems

    Globally, the buildings sector accounts for 30% of the energy consumption and more than 55% of the electricity demand. Specifically, the Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system is the most extensively operated component and it is responsible alone for 40% of the final building energy usage. HVAC systems are used to provide healthy and comfortable indoor conditions, and their main objective is to maintain the thermal comfort of occupants with minimum energy usage. HVAC systems include a considerable number of sensors, controlled actuators, and other components. They are at risk of malfunctioning or failure resulting in reduced efficiency, potential interference with the execution of supervision schemes, and equipment deterioration. Hence, Fault Diagnosis (FD) of HVAC systems is essential to improve their reliability, efficiency, and performance, and to provide preventive maintenance. In this thesis work, two neural network-based methods are proposed for sensor and actuator faults in a 3-zone HVAC system. For sensor faults, an online semi-supervised sensor data validation and fault diagnosis method using an Auto-Associative Neural Network (AANN) is developed. The method is based on the implementation of Nonlinear Principal Component Analysis (NPCA) using a Back-Propagation Neural Network (BPNN) and it demonstrates notable capability in sensor fault and inaccuracy correction, measurement noise reduction, missing sensor data replacement, and in both single and multiple sensor faults diagnosis. In addition, a novel on-line supervised multi-model approach for actuator fault diagnosis using Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) is developed for single actuator faults. It is based a data transformation in which the 1-dimensional data are configured into a 2-dimensional representation without the use of advanced signal processing techniques. The CNN-based actuator fault diagnosis approach demonstrates improved performance capability compared with the commonly used Machine Learning-based algorithms (i.e., Support Vector Machine and standard Neural Networks). The presented schemes are compared with other commonly used HVAC fault diagnosis methods for benchmarking and they are proven to be superior, effective, accurate, and reliable.
