    Comparing P2PTV Traffic Classifiers

    Get PDF
Peer-to-Peer IP Television (P2PTV) applications represent one of the fastest growing application classes on the Internet, both in terms of their popularity and in terms of the amount of traffic they generate. While network operators require monitoring tools that can effectively analyze the traffic produced by these systems, few techniques have been tested on these mostly closed-source, proprietary applications. In this paper we examine the properties of three traffic classifiers applied to the problem of identifying P2PTV traffic. We report on extensive experiments conducted on traffic traces with reliable ground truth information, highlighting the benefits and shortcomings of each approach. The results show that not only their performance in terms of accuracy can vary significantly, but also that their usability features suggest different effective aspects that can be integrate

Architectural design and deployment of Peer-to-Peer Video-on-Demand (P2PVoD) systems which support VCR functionalities is attracting the interest of an increasing number of research groups within the scientific community; especially due to the intrinsic characteristics of such systems and the benefits that peers could provide at reducing the server load. This work focuses on the performance analysis of a P2P-VoD system considering user behaviors obtained from real traces together with other synthetic user patterns. The experiments performed show that it is feasible to achieve a performance close to the best possible. Future work will consider monitoring the physical characteristics of the network in order to improve the design of different aspects of a VoD system. The number of applications using the peer-to-peer (P2P) networking paradigm and their popularity has substantially grown over the last decade. They evolved from the le-sharing applications to media streaming ones. Nowadays these applications commonly encrypt the communication contents or employ protocol obfuscation techniques. In this dissertation, it was conducted an investigation to identify encrypted traf c ows generated by three of the most popular P2P live streaming applications: TVUPlayer, Livestation and GoalBit. For this work, a test-bed that could simulate a near real scenario was created, and traf c was captured from a great variety of applications. The method proposed resort to Deep Packet Inspection (DPI), so we needed to analyse the payload of the packets in order to nd repeated patterns, that later were used to create a set of SNORT rules that can be used to detect key network packets generated by these applications. The method was evaluated experimentally on the test-bed created for that purpose, being shown that its accuracy is of 97% for GoalBit.A popularidade e o número de aplicações que usam o paradigma de redes par-a-par (P2P) têm crescido substancialmente na última década.

CHORUS Deliverable 2.2: Second report - identification of multi-disciplinary key issues for gap analysis toward EU multimedia search engines roadmap

After addressing the state-of-the-art during the first year of Chorus and establishing the existing landscape in multimedia search engines, we have identified and analyzed gaps within European research effort during our second year. In this period we focused on three directions, notably technological issues, user-centred issues and use-cases and socio- economic and legal aspects. These were assessed by two central studies: firstly, a concerted vision of functional breakdown of generic multimedia search engine, and secondly, a representative use-cases descriptions with the related discussion on requirement for technological challenges. Both studies have been carried out in cooperation and consultation with the community at large through EC concertation meetings (multimedia search engines cluster), several meetings with our Think-Tank, presentations in international conferences, and surveys addressed to EU projects coordinators as well as National initiatives coordinators. Based on the obtained feedback we identified two types of gaps, namely core technological gaps that involve research challenges, and “enablers”, which are not necessarily technical research challenges, but have impact on innovation progress. New socio-economic trends are presented as well as emerging legal challenges

Understanding a large-scale IPTV network via system logs

Recently, there has been a global trend among the telecommunication industry on the rapid deployment of IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) infrastructure and services. While the industry rushes into the IPTV era, the comprehensive understanding of the status and dynamics of IPTV network lags behind. Filling this gap requires in-depth analysis of large amounts of measurement data across the IPTV network. One type of the data of particular interest is device or system log, which has not been systematically studied before. In this dissertation, we will explore the possibility of utilizing system logs to serve a wide range of IPTV network management purposes including health monitoring, troubleshooting and performance evaluation, etc. In particular, we develop a tool to convert raw router syslogs to meaningful network events. In addition, by analyzing set-top box (STB) logs, we propose a series of models to capture both channel popularity and dynamics, and users' activity on the IPTV network.Ph.D.Committee Chair: Jun Xu; Committee Member: Jia Wang; Committee Member: Mostafa H. Clouseau Evaluation for Peer-to-Peer Transfer Operations

We evaluate whether Clouseau, a commercial product from SafeMedia, Inc., is effective in discriminating between risky and non-risky P2P operations. We construct a testbed and assess the Clouseau's efficacy in interdicting risky content while passing non-risky content in both laboratory and office settings, using a wide variety of applications and protocols. We determine that Clouseau effectively blocks access to content via known P2P protocols communicating with networks identified by SafeMedia as containing risky content, but also prevents legitimate communications and does not block alternative protocols for accessing risky content. Consequently, Clouseau is not completely effective.http://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/107884/1/citi-tr-09-1.pd
