The Signal Data Explorer: A high performance Grid based signal search tool for use in distributed diagnostic applications
We describe a high performance Grid based signal search tool for distributed diagnostic applications developed in conjunction with Rolls-Royce plc for civil aero engine condition monitoring applications. With the introduction of advanced monitoring technology into engineering systems, healthcare, etc., the associated diagnostic processes are increasingly required to handle and consider vast amounts of data. An exemplar of such a diagnosis process was developed during the DAME project, which built a proof of concept demonstrator to assist in the enhanced diagnosis and prognosis of aero-engine conditions. In particular it has shown the utility of an interactive viewing and high performance distributed search tool (the Signal Data Explorer) in the aero-engine diagnostic process. The viewing and search techniques are equally applicable to other domains. The Signal Data Explorer and search services have been demonstrated on the Worldwide Universities Network to search distributed databases of electrocardiograph data
Report on the Third Workshop on Sustainable Software for Science: Practice and Experiences (WSSSPE3)
This report records and discusses the Third Workshop on Sustainable Software
for Science: Practice and Experiences (WSSSPE3). The report includes a
description of the keynote presentation of the workshop, which served as an
overview of sustainable scientific software. It also summarizes a set of
lightning talks in which speakers highlighted to-the-point lessons and
challenges pertaining to sustaining scientific software. The final and main
contribution of the report is a summary of the discussions, future steps, and
future organization for a set of self-organized working groups on topics
including developing pathways to funding scientific software; constructing
useful common metrics for crediting software stakeholders; identifying
principles for sustainable software engineering design; reaching out to
research software organizations around the world; and building communities for
software sustainability. For each group, we include a point of contact and a
landing page that can be used by those who want to join that group's future
activities. The main challenge left by the workshop is to see if the groups
will execute these activities that they have scheduled, and how the WSSSPE
community can encourage this to happen
Communication across the Electronic Resources Lifecycle: A Survey of Academic Libraries
The objective of this study was to identify common communication issues that arise during the electronic resource lifecycle and identify communication strategies academic libraries are using effectively to manage electronic resources. A survey of academic librarians and staff received 240 responses and included 5-point Likert scale ratings on communication surrounding acquisitions, access, administration, support, evaluation, and renewal at their institutions. The study found that the acquisitions, evaluation, and renewal stages of the lifecycle experienced the most issues in communication, while support had the most positive responses. This article provides further discussion on the communication mechanisms used by academic institutions across the electronic resources lifecycle
Towards Exascale Scientific Metadata Management
Advances in technology and computing hardware are enabling scientists from
all areas of science to produce massive amounts of data using large-scale
simulations or observational facilities. In this era of data deluge, effective
coordination between the data production and the analysis phases hinges on the
availability of metadata that describe the scientific datasets. Existing
workflow engines have been capturing a limited form of metadata to provide
provenance information about the identity and lineage of the data. However,
much of the data produced by simulations, experiments, and analyses still need
to be annotated manually in an ad hoc manner by domain scientists. Systematic
and transparent acquisition of rich metadata becomes a crucial prerequisite to
sustain and accelerate the pace of scientific innovation. Yet, ubiquitous and
domain-agnostic metadata management infrastructure that can meet the demands of
extreme-scale science is notable by its absence.
To address this gap in scientific data management research and practice, we
present our vision for an integrated approach that (1) automatically captures
and manipulates information-rich metadata while the data is being produced or
analyzed and (2) stores metadata within each dataset to permeate
metadata-oblivious processes and to query metadata through established and
standardized data access interfaces. We motivate the need for the proposed
integrated approach using applications from plasma physics, climate modeling
and neuroscience, and then discuss research challenges and possible solutions
