    Distributed workload control for federated service discovery

    The diffusion of the internet paradigm in each aspect of human life continuously fosters the widespread of new technologies and related services. In the Future Internet scenario, where 5G telecommunication facilities will interact with the internet of things world, analyzing in real time big amounts of data to feed a potential infinite set of services belonging to different administrative domains, the role of a federated service discovery will become crucial. In this paper the authors propose a distributed workload control algorithm to handle efficiently the service discovery requests, with the aim of minimizing the overall latencies experienced by the requesting user agents. The authors propose an algorithm based on the Wardrop equilibrium, which is a gametheoretical concept, applied to the federated service discovery domain. The proposed solution has been implemented and its performance has been assessed adopting different network topologies and metrics. An open source simulation environment has been created allowing other researchers to test the proposed solution

    Analysis domain model for shared virtual environments

    The field of shared virtual environments, which also encompasses online games and social 3D environments, has a system landscape consisting of multiple solutions that share great functional overlap. However, there is little system interoperability between the different solutions. A shared virtual environment has an associated problem domain that is highly complex raising difficult challenges to the development process, starting with the architectural design of the underlying system. This paper has two main contributions. The first contribution is a broad domain analysis of shared virtual environments, which enables developers to have a better understanding of the whole rather than the part(s). The second contribution is a reference domain model for discussing and describing solutions - the Analysis Domain Model

    A Software-Agnostic Agent-based Platform for Modelling Emerging Mobility Systems

    Due to the rapidly accelerated innovation cycle in transport and the emergence of new mobility concepts and technologies, public authorities, policy makers, and transport planners are currently in need of the tools for sustainable spatial and transport planning in the new mobility era. In this paper, a new modular, software-agnostic and activity-based spatial and transport planning platform is designed, i.e, the HARMONY Model Suite, that facilitates a novel integration of new and existing spatial and transport modelling tools. The paper focuses on describing the architecture of the platform and its passenger mobility simulation framework, which integrates -in an interoperable manner- activity-based models, mobility service management, and traffic simulation tools for evaluating new mobility system dynamics. The service management controllers for new mobility concepts are discussed in more detail with regards to their functionality and applicability

    Network Latency and Packet Delay Variation in Cyber-physical Systems

    The problem addressed in this paper is the limitation imposed by network elements, especially Ethernet elements, on the real-time performance of time-critical systems. Most current network elements are concerned only with data integrity, connection, and throughput with no mechanism for enforcing temporal semantics. Existing safety-critical applications and other applications in industry require varying degrees of control over system-wide temporal semantics. In addition, there are emerging commercial applications that require or will benefit from tighter enforcement of temporal semantics in network elements than is currently possible. This paper examines these applications and requirements and suggests possible approaches to imposing temporal semantics on networks.
