An agent-based DDM for high level architecture
The Data Distribution Management (DDM) service is one of the six services provided in the Runtime Infrastructure (RTI) of High Level Architecture (HLA). Its purpose is to perform data filtering and reduce irrelevant data communicated between federates. The two DDM schemes proposed for RTI, region based and grid based DDM, are oriented to send as little irrelevant data to subscribers as possible, but only manage to filter part of this information and some irrelevant data is still being communicated. Previously (G. Tan et al., 2000), we employed intelligent agents to perform data filtering in HLA, implemented an agent based DDM in RTI (ARTI) and compared it with the other two filtering mechanisms. The paper reports on additional experiments, results and analysis using two scenarios: the AWACS sensing aircraft simulation and the air traffic control simulation scenario. Experimental results show that compared with other mechanisms, the agent based approach communicates only relevant data and minimizes network communication, and is also comparable in terms of time efficiency. Service-Oriented Multigranular Optical Network Architecture for Clouds
This paper presents a novel service-oriented network architecture to bridge the informational gap between user applications and optical networks providing technology-agnostic multigranular optical network services for clouds. A mediation layer (service plane) between user applications and network control is proposed to facilitate a mapping process between user application requests and the network services. At the network level, a multigranular optical network (MGON) is proposed and implemented to support dynamic wavelength and subwavelength granularities with different transport formats [optical burst switched (OBS), optical burst transport (OBT)], reservation protocols (one-way, two-way), and different quality-of-service (QoS) levels per service type. The service-oriented multigranular optical network has been designed, implemented, and demonstrated on an experimental testbed. The testbed consists of service and network resource provisioning, service abstraction, and network resource virtualization. The service-to-network interoperation is provided by means of a gateway that maps service requests to technology-specific parameters and a common signaling channel for both service and network resource provisioning

Security-oriented infrastructures for social simulation
The JISC-funded National e-Infrastructure for Social Simulation (NeISS) project aims to develop
and provide new services to social scientists and public/private sector policymakers interested in
“what-if” questions that have an impact upon society and can be tackled through social simulation. For
the first what-if question, a traffic simulation modelling how congestion will affect routes within a city
or region projected across a time-span of decades has been identified. This paper describes the work
that has been done in implementing a secure, user-oriented environment that provides seamless access
to relevant nationally significant data sets such as the 2001 Census and demographic transition
statistics from the British Household Panel Survey (BHPS) , and a Population Reconstruction Model
(PRM) simulator, which simulates a population of individuals or households based upon these data

A State-of-the-art Integrated Transportation Simulation Platform
Nowadays, universities and companies have a huge need for simulation and
modelling methodologies. In the particular case of traffic and transportation,
making physical modifications to the real traffic networks could be highly
expensive, dependent on political decisions and could be highly disruptive to
the environment. However, while studying a specific domain or problem,
analysing a problem through simulation may not be trivial and may need several
simulation tools, hence raising interoperability issues. To overcome these
problems, we propose an agent-directed transportation simulation platform,
through the cloud, by means of services. We intend to use the IEEE standard HLA
(High Level Architecture) for simulators interoperability and agents for
controlling and coordination. Our motivations are to allow multiresolution
analysis of complex domains, to allow experts to collaborate on the analysis of
a common problem and to allow co-simulation and synergy of different
application domains. This paper will start by presenting some preliminary
background concepts to help better understand the scope of this work. After
that, the results of a literature review is shown. Finally, the general
architecture of a transportation simulation platform is proposed
The Motivation, Architecture and Demonstration of Ultralight Network Testbed
In this paper we describe progress in the NSF-funded Ultralight project and a recent demonstration of Ultralight technologies at SuperComputing 2005 (SC|05). The goal of the
Ultralight project is to help meet the data-intensive computing challenges of the next generation of particle physics experiments with a comprehensive, network-focused approach. Ultralight adopts a new approach to networking: instead of treating it traditionally, as a static, unchanging and unmanaged set of inter-computer links, we are developing and using it as a dynamic, configurable, and closely monitored resource that is managed from end-to-end. Thus we are constructing a next-generation global system that is able to meet the data processing, distribution, access and analysis needs of the particle physics community. In this paper we present the motivation for, and an overview of, the Ultralight project. We then cover early
results in the various working areas of the project. The remainder of the paper describes our experiences of the Ultralight network architecture, kernel setup, application tuning and configuration used during the bandwidth challenge event at SC|05. During this Challenge, we
achieved a record-breaking aggregate data rate in excess of 150 Gbps while moving physics datasets between many sites interconnected by the Ultralight backbone network. The exercise highlighted the benefits of Ultralight's research and development efforts that are enabling new and advanced methods of distributed scientific data analysis
