Analysis of a polling system modeling QoS differentiation in WLANs
This paper investigates a polling system with a random polling scheme, a 1-limited service discipline and deterministic service requirement modeling WLANs with QoS differentation capability. The system contains high and low priority queues that are distinguished via the probability of being served next. We propose a new iteration algorithm to approximate the waiting time of customers in the high and low priority queues. As shown by simulation results, our approximation is accurate for light to moderately loaded networks
A Dynamic Multimedia User-Weight Classification Scheme for IEEE_802.11 WLANs
In this paper we expose a dynamic traffic-classification scheme to support
multimedia applications such as voice and broadband video transmissions over
IEEE 802.11 Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs). Obviously, over a Wi-Fi link
and to better serve these applications - which normally have strict bounded
transmission delay or minimum link rate requirement - a service differentiation
technique can be applied to the media traffic transmitted by the same mobile
node using the well-known 802.11e Enhanced Distributed Channel Access (EDCA)
protocol. However, the given EDCA mode does not offer user differentiation,
which can be viewed as a deficiency in multi-access wireless networks.
Accordingly, we propose a new inter-node priority access scheme for IEEE
802.11e networks which is compatible with the EDCA scheme. The proposed scheme
joins a dynamic user-weight to each mobile station depending on its outgoing
data, and therefore deploys inter-node priority for the channel access to
complement the existing EDCA inter-frame priority. This provides efficient
quality of service control across multiple users within the same coverage area
of an access point. We provide performance evaluations to compare the proposed
access model with the basic EDCA 802.11 MAC protocol mode to elucidate the
quality improvement achieved for multimedia communication over 802.11 WLANs.Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures, 3 tables, International Journal of Computer

Real-Time Misbehavior Detection in IEEE 802.11e Based WLANs
The Enhanced Distributed Channel Access (EDCA) specification in the IEEE
802.11e standard supports heterogeneous backoff parameters and arbitration
inter-frame space (AIFS), which makes a selfish node easy to manipulate these
parameters and misbehave. In this case, the network-wide fairness cannot be
achieved any longer. Many existing misbehavior detectors, primarily designed
for legacy IEEE 802.11 networks, become inapplicable in such a heterogeneous
network configuration. In this paper, we propose a novel real-time hybrid-share
(HS) misbehavior detector for IEEE 802.11e based wireless local area networks
(WLANs). The detector keeps updating its state based on every successful
transmission and makes detection decisions by comparing its state with a
threshold. We develop mathematical analysis of the detector performance in
terms of both false positive rate and average detection rate. Numerical results
show that the proposed detector can effectively detect both contention window
based and AIFS based misbehavior with only a short detection window.Comment: Accepted to IEEE Globecom 201
Performance analysis of a threshold-based dynamic TXOP scheme for intra-AC QoS in wireless LANs
PublishedJournal ArticleThis is the author accepted manuscript. The final version is available from Elsevier via the DOI in this record. The IEEE 802.11e Enhanced Distributed Channel Access (EDCA) protocol has been proposed for provisioning of differentiated Quality-of-Service (QoS) between various Access Categories (ACs), i.e., inter-AC QoS, in Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs). However, the EDCA lacks the support of the intra-AC QoS provisioning, which is indispensable in practical WLANs since the network loads are always asymmetric between traffic flows of ACs with the same priority. To address the intra-AC QoS issue, this paper proposes a Threshold-Based Dynamic Transmission Opportunity (TBD-TXOP) scheme which sets the TXOP limits adaptive to the current status of the transmission queue based on the pre-setting threshold. An analytical model is further developed to evaluate the QoS performance of this scheme in terms of throughput, end-to-end delay, and frame loss probability. NS-2 simulation experiments validate the accuracy of the proposed analytical model. The performance results demonstrate the efficacy of TBD-TXOP for the intra-AC QoS differentiation. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved
Multiple preemptive EDCA for emergency medium access control in distributed WLANs
The increasingly use of wireless local area networks (WLANs) in public safety and emergency network services demands for a strict quality of service (QoS) guarantee especially a large number of users report an emergency for immediate channel access. Unfortunately, the traditional IEEE 802.11e-based enhanced distributed channel access (EDCA) does not support a strict QoS guarantee for life saving emergency traffic under high loads. Previous studies have attempted to enhance the performance of EDCA called the Channel Preemtive EDCA (CP-EDCA) which is a promising idea to support emergency traffic in WLANs. However, CP-EDCA supports a single emergency traffic only (i.e. no emergency service differentiation) with high delays for increased traffic loads. To overcome this problem, we propose a class of EDCA protocol called Multiple Preemption EDCA (MPEDCA) as a candidate to support multiple emergency traffics under high loads. Each MP-EDCA node can support up to four emergency traffics (life, health, property and environment) with different priorities in addition to support background (non-emergency) traffic. The proposed protocol privileged the high priority life-saving emergency traffic to preempt the services of low priority ones without much starvation in the network to maintain a strict QoS guarantee. The paper evaluates the performance of MPEDCA through an extensive analysis of simulation outcome. The results obtained show that MP-EDCA outperforms CP-EDCA in achieving lower medium access control and emergency node delays
