Comparative Analysis of Active and Passive Mapping Techniques in an Internet-Based Local Area Network
Network mapping technologies allow quick and easy discovery of computer systems throughout a network. Active mapping methods, such as using nmap, capitalize on the standard stimulus-response of network systems to probe target systems. In doing so, they create extra traffic on the network, both for the initial probe and for the target system\u27s response. Passive mapping methods work opportunistically, listening for network traffic as it transits the system. As such, passive methods generate minimal network traffic overhead. Active methods are still standard methods for network information gathering; passive techniques are not normally used due to the possibility of missing important information as it passes by the sensor. Configuring the network for passive network mapping also involves more network management. This research explores the implementation of a prototype passive network mapping system, lanmap, designed for use within an Internet Protocol-based local area network. Network traffic is generated by a synthetic traffic generation suite using honeyd and syntraf, a custom Java program to interact with honeyd. lanmap is tested against nmap to compare the two techniques. Experimental results show that lanmap is quite effective, discovering an average of 76.1% of all configured services (server- and client-side) whereas nmap only found 27.6% of all configured services. Conversely, lanmap discovered 19.9% of the server services while nmap discovered 92.7% of the configured server-side services. lanmap discovered 100% of all client-side service consumers while nmap found none. lanmap generated an average of 200 packets of network overhead while nmap generated a minimum of minimum 8,600 packets on average?up to 155,000 packets at its maximum average value. The results show that given the constraints of the test bed, passive network mapping is a viable alternative to action network mapping, unless the mapper is looking for server-side services
Pervasive computing at tableside : a wireless web-based ordering system
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to introduce a wireless web-based ordering system called iMenu in the restaurant industry. Design/methodology/approach – By using wireless devices such as personal digital assistants and WebPads, this system realizes the paradigm of pervasive computing at tableside. Detailed system requirements, design, implementation and evaluation of iMenu are presented.Findings – The evaluation of iMenu shows it explicitly increases productivity of restaurant staff. It also has other desirable features such as integration, interoperation and scalability. Compared to traditional restaurant ordering process, by using this system customers get faster and better services, restaurant staff cooperate more efficiently with less working mistakes, and enterprise owners thus receive more business profits. Originality/value – While many researchers have explored using wireless web-based information systems in different industries, this paper presents a system that employs wireless multi-tiered web-based architecture to build pervasive computing systems. Instead of discussing theoretical issues on pervasive computing, we focus on practical issues of developing a real system, such as choosing of web-based architecture, design of input methods in small screens, and response time in wireless web-based systems.<br /
Software engineering and middleware: a roadmap (Invited talk)
The construction of a large class of distributed systems can be simplified by leveraging middleware, which is layered between network operating systems and application components. Middleware resolves heterogeneity and facilitates communication and coordination of distributed components. Existing middleware products enable software engineers to build systems that are distributed across a local-area network. State-of-the-art middleware research aims to push this boundary towards Internet-scale distribution, adaptive and reconfigurable middleware and middleware for dependable and wireless systems. Client-server-based LBS architecture: A novel positioning module for improved positioning performance
Permission to distribute obtained from publisher.This work presents a new efficient positioning module that operates over client-server LBS architectures. The
aim of the proposed module is to fulfil the position information requirements for LBS pedestrian applications
by ensuring the availability of reliable, highly accurate and precise position solutions based on GPS single
frequency (L1) positioning service. The positioning module operates at both LBS architecture sides; the client
(mobile device), and the server (positioning server). At the server side, the positioning module is responsible
for correcting userâs location information based on WADGPS corrections. In addition, at the mobile side,
the positioning module is continually in charge for monitoring the integrity and available of the position
solutions as well as managing the communication with the server. The integrity monitoring was based on
EGNOS integrity methods. A prototype of the proposed module was developed and used in experimental trials
to evaluate the efficiency of the module in terms of the achieved positioning performance. The positioning
module was capable of achieving a horizontal accuracy of less than 2 meters with a 95% confidence level
with integrity improvement of more than 30% from existing GPS/EGNOS services
Web Service Testing and Usability for Mobile Learning
Based on the summary of recent renowned publications, Mobile Learning (ML) has become an emerging technology, as well as a new technique that can enhance the quality of learning. Due to the increasing importance of ML, the investigation of such impacts on the e-Science community is amongst the hot topics, which also relate to part of these research areas: Grid Infrastructure, Wireless Communication, Virtual Research Organization and Semantic Web. The above examples contribute to the demonstrations of how Mobile Learning can be applied into e-Science applications, including usability. However, there are few papers addressing testing and quality engineering issues â the core component for software engineering. Therefore, the major purpose of this paper is to present how Web Service Testing for Mobile Learning can be carried out, in addition to re-investigating the influences of the usability issue with both quantitative and qualitative research methods. Out of many mobile technologies available, the Pocket PC and Tablet PC have been chosen as the equipment; and the OMII Web Service, the 64-bit .NET e-portal and the GPS-PDA are the software tools to be used for Web Service testing

connected things and objects with a high grow rate, several challenges have
been raised such as management, aggregation and storage for big produced data.
In order to tackle some of these issues, cloud computing emerged to IoT as
Cloud of Things (CoT) which provides virtually unlimited cloud services to
enhance the large scale IoT platforms. There are several factors to be
considered in design and implementation of a CoT platform. One of the most
important and challenging problems is the heterogeneity of different objects.
This problem can be addressed by deploying suitable "Middleware". Middleware
sits between things and applications that make a reliable platform for
communication among things with different interfaces, operating systems, and
architectures. The main aim of this paper is to study the middleware
technologies for CoT. Toward this end, we first present the main features and
characteristics of middlewares. Next we study different architecture styles and
service domains. Then we presents several middlewares that are suitable for CoT
based platforms and lastly a list of current challenges and issues in design of

A Framework for Quality-Driven Delivery in Distributed Multimedia Systems
In this paper, we propose a framework for Quality-Driven Delivery (QDD) in distributed multimedia environments. Quality-driven delivery refers to the capacity of a system to deliver documents, or more generally objects, while considering the users expectations in terms of non-functional requirements. For this QDD framework, we propose a model-driven approach where we focus on QoS information modeling and transformation. QoS information models and meta-models are used during different QoS activities for mapping requirements to system constraints, for exchanging QoS information, for checking compatibility between QoS information and more generally for making QoS decisions. We also investigate which model transformation operators have to be implemented in order to support some QoS activities such as QoS mapping
