    Indirect Prophecies Concerning the Death of Christ in Narrative

    In Luke 24, two disciples recognized that Jesus had predicted He would suffer, be betrayed, and handed over to death by crucifixion, and had said He would rise again on the third day. It was now the third day, and Jesus was no longer in the tomb, but they were confused as to what these things meant and how they came to be. Jesus says to them, ‚Äú‚ÄėO foolish ones and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken! Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into His glory?‚Äô And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, He expounded to them all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself‚ÄĚ (vv. 25-27). Furthermore, He explained that ‚Äúall things must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning Me‚ÄĚ (v 44). This foretelling by the full scope of the Old Testament, was to communicate that suffering, death, and rising were necessary to bring about repentance and remission of sins (v 47). The thesis of this dissertation is that even within the narrative sections of Scripture that are comprised mostly of the Pentateuch and Former prophets, Christ‚Äôs suffering, death, and resurrection were foretold. Specifically, they were foretold not just in the few direct prophecies but within the lives of the characters, in the words that were spoken, within actions done, and in events that played out. It further will contend that typology is the best hermeneutical method to be used to determine the type-antitype connections between Christ‚Äôs suffering, death, and resurrection to the characters and events in these sections of Scripture. Moreover, these narratives will be filtered through the two clearest direct prophecies concerning the death of Christ, Isaiah 53 and Psalm 22, both of which were written during the time of the Former Prophets. Because Isaiah 53 is considered by several scholars to not have been written during Isaiah‚Äôs lifetime but much later, and by some that David was not a historical monarch of the Israelite people, time is spent establishing the chronology of the Bible and the interconnections between Isaiah‚Äôs and David‚Äôs writings to the Former Prophets and Pentateuch

    Discipleship: A Biblical Approach and Alignment to the Spirit of the Ministry at Kingdom Collegiate Academies Early Childhood Program

    The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine the spiritual practices of early childhood teachers at Kingdom Collegiate Academies Early Childhood Program at Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship Church. The research study was designed to develop a professional training program to increase staff effectiveness and alignment with the Spirit of the Ministry traits at Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship Church. The program was delivered through a biblically based discipleship and Spirit of the Ministry training program. Through the Bible study, each trait was examined and discussed to solicit adherence to the various traits. During the study, early childhood teachers grew in their understanding that biblical knowledge and spiritual disciplines formed the foundation for a holistic worldview of discipleship. The literature review supports the various themes taught throughout the Bible study to the early childhood teachers. A focus on Lawrence Kohlberg’s stages of Moral development and James Fowler stages of faith development provide context to the spiritual development of children through adulthood. The design of the research included a discipleship survey and questionnaires. Each instrument provided information, yet more specific research on the effects of the Bible study with the participants needs further exploration. The Bible study, daily devotions, and prayer served a purpose in supporting each teacher in their development for a deeper relationship with Christ and sensitivity to the Holy Spirit. The findings indicate the impact of the Bible study on early childhood teachers and the degree for continuous professional and spiritual growth development in discipleship

    Charles Spurgeon preached wealth as a spiritual commodity based on his Christological exposition which countered the preaching of wealth as a divine right. Some people have come to view earthly wealth as a substance that comes as a result of obedience to God. There are also a number of people that believe that any biblical theology pertaining to wealth is amendable and see no lasting truth in the text. Spurgeon critiques these approaches. He saw earthly wealth primarily as a spiritual commodity and believed it to be a substance that should be utilized for the purpose of bringing glory to God. The researcher will present a study of what the Bible teaches with regards to wealth as perceived by Spurgeon by applying biblical theological categories and an analysis of wealth from its inception until the present day

    Under construction: infrastructure and modern fiction

    In this dissertation, I argue that infrastructural development, with its technological promises but widening geographic disparities and social and environmental consequences, informs both the narrative content and aesthetic forms of modernist and contemporary Anglophone fiction. Despite its prevalent material forms‚ÄĒroads, rails, pipes, and wires‚ÄĒinfrastructure poses particular formal and narrative problems, often receding into the background as mere setting. To address how literary fiction theorizes the experience of infrastructure requires reading ‚Äúinfrastructurally‚ÄĚ: that is, paying attention to the seemingly mundane interactions between characters and their built environments. The writers central to this project‚ÄĒJames Joyce, William Faulkner, Karen Tei Yamashita, and Mohsin Hamid‚ÄĒtake up the representational challenges posed by infrastructure by bringing transit networks, sanitation systems, and electrical grids and the histories of their development and use into the foreground. These writers call attention to the political dimensions of built environments, revealing the ways infrastructures produce, reinforce, and perpetuate racial and socioeconomic fault lines. They also attempt to formalize the material relations of power inscribed by and within infrastructure; the novel itself becomes an imaginary counterpart to the technologies of infrastructure, a form that shapes and constrains what types of social action and affiliation are possible

    John’s Complementing of Mark’s Wicked Tenants Parable in his Metaphor of the True Vine

    The relationship between the gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke is well known, but the question of John‚Äôs dependence has been researched by countless scholars since the first century without the formation of a consensus. This study seeks to enter this discussion through the examination of the relationship between Mark‚Äôs wicked tenants parable (Mark 12:1‚Äď12) and John‚Äôs true vine metaphor (John 15:1‚Äď17). John‚Äôs metaphor of the true vine is replete with images woven through the Old Testament and carried forward into the New. In John‚Äôs metaphor, Jesus presents himself as the true Israel and says that His followers are the ones who will fill the earth with fruit. John incorporates intertextual references in the metaphor of the true vine, drawing from various sources identified by many as texts from Isaiah (Isa 5:1‚Äď7, 27:2ff.), Jeremiah (Jer 2:21, 12:10ff.), Ezekiel (Ezek 15:1‚Äď8, 17:5ff., 19:10‚Äď14), and Psalms (Ps 80:9‚Äď16). While these passages hold significance on their own, it is possible that John also had access to other New Testament texts and aimed to connect his metaphor to a pericope presented by one of those authors. Intertextual analysis will be used to explore whether John intended for his readers to consider Mark\u27s parable of the wicked tenants in relation to his metaphor. Through John‚Äôs interaction with Isianic texts as a framework and allusions to Mark‚Äôs parable depicting God\u27s rejection of Israel\u27s leadership, John presents Jesus and His followers as the fulfillment of Isaiah‚Äôs vineyard theme. The relationship between John and Mark has not been studied, so Richard Hays‚Äô seven tests of intertextuality are used throughout this research to demonstrate that verbal and thematic themes coalesce through the Isaianic, Markan, and Johannine texts in support of the thesis of this study. Isaiah, Mark, and John use the imagery of the vine/vineyard to present the unfolding story of God‚Äôs love and redemption. This study demonstrates the plausibility that the readers of Mark could have observed the textual echoes and thematic correspondence in John‚Äôs metaphor and concluded that John‚Äôs metaphor complemented Mark‚Äôs parable

    Pentecostal Health: The Intentionality of Being a Spirit-filled Ministry

    The premise of this research project asserts that a disconnect exists between what Pentecostal churches profess to believe and what is experienced and practiced by their congregations. The purpose of this project was to discover if this disconnect exists. Secular philosopher Franz Brentano popularized the concept of intentionality. Jesus demonstrated intentionality regarding the partnership with the Holy Spirit and his followers, expecting them to be empowered with the Holy Spirit for Christian living and witness. Jesus always intended for his Church to be filled with Pentecostal people. Jesus‚Äô intention can be perceived by observing what He said about the Holy Spirit in the Gospel of John and what Luke demonstrated in the ministry of Jesus in the Gospel of Luke and Acts. The concept of Pentecostal Health is presented in this research, identifying six characteristics of a healthy Pentecostal ministry. A congregational survey and a staff/leadership survey were developed and distributed to six participating Assembly of God churches to measure the accuracy of their self-awareness and whether the outcomes correlate with their experiences and practices. The surveys also assess the desired needs regarding the Holy Spirit. The evidence reveals both the strengths of the church and areas of needed growth. This empowers the staff and leadership of these churches to take intentional steps in regaining, maintaining, and increasing their Pentecostal health. Intentionality is necessary for Pentecostal leaders to successfully pass on the essential experiences and practices that identify them as Spirit-filled ministries. El prop√≥sito de este proyecto fue descubrir si existe esta desconexi√≥n. El fil√≥sofo secular Franz Brentano populariz√≥ el concepto de intencionalidad. Jes√ļs demostr√≥ intencionalidad con respecto a la asociaci√≥n con el Esp√≠ritu Santo y sus seguidores, esperando que fueran empoderados con el Esp√≠ritu Santo para la vida y el testimonio cristiano. Jes√ļs siempre tuvo la intenci√≥n de que su Iglesia estuviera llena de gente pentecostal.
