    Selected Issues on Histograming on GPUs

    The contemporary large scale measuring systems in the real-time environment make extensive use of histogramming as a tool for the experimental data quality monitoring. The processing of a large number of data channels requires a suitable computing power where the graphical processors seem to be well suited. Histogramming operations run on the central and graphics processing units are discussed. Results of the performance measurements including various configurations of the allocation of the histograms in various parts of the memory of used devices are presented

    FPGA Implementation of Data Flow Graphs for Digital Signal Processing Applications

    A rapid growth in digital signal processing applications has increased the requirement for high-speed digital systems. Multiprocessor systems are the best choice for these applications. A prior sequence of operations should be applied to the operations that described the nature of these applications before hardware implementation is produced. These operations should be scheduled and hardware allocated. This paper proposes a new scheduling technique for digital signal processing (DSP) applications has been represented by data flow graphs (DFGs). In addition, hardware allocation is implemented in the form of embedded system. A proposed scheduling technique also achieves the optimal scheduling of a DFG at design time. The optimality criteria considered in this algorithm are the maximum throughput within the available hardware resources. The maximum throughput is achieved by arranging the DFG nodes according to their inter-related data dependencies. Then, two nodes can be clustered into one compound task to reduce the overall execution time by minimizing the number of tasks to be executed that minimizing the number of cycles to execute them. Then each task is presented in form of instruction to be executed in the hardware system. A hardware system is composed of one or multiple homogenous pipelined processing elements and it is designed to meet the maximum-rate schedule.  Two implementations are proposed of the system architecture according to the number of the processing elements, namely:  the serial system and the parallel system. The serial system comprises one processing element where all tasks are processed sequentially, whilst the parallel system has four processing elements to execute tasks concurrently. These systems consist mainly of seven units: central shared memory, state table, multiway function unit buffer, execution array, processing element/s, instruction buffer and the address generation unit. The hardware components were built on an FPGA chip using Verilog HDL. In synthesis results, the parallel system has better system performance by 25.5% than the serial system. While the serial system requires smaller area size, which described by the number of slice registers and the number of the slice lookup tables (LUTs) than the parallel one. The relationship between the number of instructions that are executed in both systems, and the system area and the system performance that presented by system frequency, are studied. By increasing memories size in both systems, the system performance isn’t affected as in a serial system, and it is slightly decreased as the parallel system by 1.5% to 4.5%. In terms of the systems area, both serial system area and parallel system area are increased and in some cases are doubled. The proposed scheduling technique is shown to outperform the retaining technique, which we have chosen to compare with.  The serial system has better performance by 19.3% higher system frequency than a retiming technique. And the parallel system also outperforms the retaining technique by 51.2% higher system frequency in synthesis results

    Command vector memory systems: high performance at low cost

    The focus of this paper is on designing both a low cost and high performance, high bandwidth vector memory system that takes advantage of modern commodity SDRAM memory chips. To successfully extract the full bandwidth from SDRAM parts, we propose a new memory system organization based on sending commands to the memory system as opposed to sending individual addresses. A command specifies, in a few bytes, a request for multiple independent memory words. A command is similar to a burst found in DRAM memories, but does not require the memory words to be consecutive. The command is sent to all sections of the memory array simultaneously, thus not requiring a crossbar in the proper sense. Our simulations show that this command based memory system can improve performance over a traditional SDRAM-based memory system by factors that range between 1.15 up to 1.54. Moreover, in many cases, the command memory system outperforms even the best SRAM memory system under consideration. Overall the command based memory system achieves similar or better results than a 10 ns SRAM memory system (a) using fewer banks and (b) using memory devices that are between 15 to 60 times cheaper.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

    Some aspects of the efficient use of multiprocessor control systems

    Computer technology, particularly at the circuit level, is fast approaching its physical limitations. As future needs for greater power from computing systems grows, increases in circuit switching speed (and thus instruction speed) will be unable to match these requirements. Greater power can also be obtained by incorporating several processing units into a single system. This ability to increase the performance of a system by the addition of processing units is one of the major advantages of multiprocessor systems. Four major characteristics of multiprocessor systems have been identified (28) which demonstrate their advantage. These are:- Throughput Flexibility Availability Reliability The additional throughput obtained from a multiprocessor has been mentioned above.. This increase in the power of the system can be obtained in a modular fashion with extra processors being added as greater processing needs arise. The addition of extra processors also has (in general) the desirable advantage of giving a smoother cost - performance curve ( 63). Flexibility is obtained from the increased ability to construct a system matching the user 'requirements at a given time without placing restrictions upon future expansion. With multiprocessor systems; the potential also exists of making greater use of the resources within the system. Availability and reliability are inter-related. Increased availability is achieved, in a well designed system, by ensuring that processing capabilities can be provided to the user even if one (or more) of the processing units has failed. The service provided, however, will probably be degraded due to the reduction in processing capacity. Increased reliability is obtained by the ability of the processing units to compensate for the failure of one of their number. This recovery may involve complex software checks and a consequent decrease in available power even when all the units are functioning

    Vector support for multicore processors with major emphasis on configurable multiprocessors

    It recently became increasingly difficult to build higher speed uniprocessor chips because of performance degradation and high power consumption. The quadratically increasing circuit complexity forbade the exploration of more instruction-level parallelism (JLP). To continue raising the performance, processor designers then focused on thread-level parallelism (TLP) to realize a new architecture design paradigm. Multicore processor design is the result of this trend. It has proven quite capable in performance increase and provides new opportunities in power management and system scalability. But current multicore processors do not provide powerful vector architecture support which could yield significant speedups for array operations while maintaining arealpower efficiency. This dissertation proposes and presents the realization of an FPGA-based prototype of a multicore architecture with a shared vector unit (MCwSV). FPGA stands for Filed-Programmable Gate Array. The idea is that rather than improving only scalar or TLP performance, some hardware budget could be used to realize a vector unit to greatly speedup applications abundant in data-level parallelism (DLP). To be realistic, limited by the parallelism in the application itself and by the compiler\u27s vectorizing abilities, most of the general-purpose programs can only be partially vectorized. Thus, for efficient resource usage, one vector unit should be shared by several scalar processors. This approach could also keep the overall budget within acceptable limits. We suggest that this type of vector-unit sharing be established in future multicore chips. The design, implementation and evaluation of an MCwSV system with two scalar processors and a shared vector unit are presented for FPGA prototyping. The MicroBlaze processor, which is a commercial IP (Intellectual Property) core from Xilinx, is used as the scalar processor; in the experiments the vector unit is connected to a pair of MicroBlaze processors through standard bus interfaces. The overall system is organized in a decoupled and multi-banked structure. This organization provides substantial system scalability and better vector performance. For a given area budget, benchmarks from several areas show that the MCwSV system can provide significant performance increase as compared to a multicore system without a vector unit. However, a MCwSV system with two MicroBlazes and a shared vector unit is not always an optimized system configuration for various applications with different percentages of vectorization. On the other hand, the MCwSV framework was designed for easy scalability to potentially incorporate various numbers of scalar/vector units and various function units. Also, the flexibility inherent to FPGAs can aid the task of matching target applications. These benefits can be taken into account to create optimized MCwSV systems for various applications. So the work eventually focused on building an architecture design framework incorporating performance and resource management for application-specific MCwSV (AS-MCwSV) systems. For embedded system design, resource usage, power consumption and execution latency are three metrics to be used in design tradeoffs. It consists of a number of satellite processors connected to central servers. The system is derived from the MINIX operating system, compatible with UNIX Version 7. A remote procedure call interface is used in conjunction with a system wide, end-to-end communication protocol that connects satellite processors to the central servers. A cached file server provides access to all files and devices at the UNIX system call level. The design of the file server is discussed in depth and the performance evaluated. Additional information is given about the software and hardware used during the development of the project. The MINIX operating system has proved to be a good choice as the software base, but certain features have proved to be poorer.
