Seeking creative solutions in response, the authors examine talent management’s (TM) theoretical and conceptual foundations, specifically the identification and selection of talent and TM programme design to explore the challenges and benefits of side-of-desk projects as interventions. Design/methodology/approach Taking an inductive qualitative approach, questionnaires, focus groups and semi-structured interviews gathered data from three employee groups in a UK digital communications organisation. Findings The authors reveal inconsistencies in the definition and selection of talent, highlighting programme quality challenges to expose a direct correlation between participant experience and motivation and retention, along with the longer-term challenges of balancing talented human capital, shareholder expectations and sustainable workforce resourcing. Originality/value The authors' research extends existing knowledge concerning the effect of organisational culture, context and workforce demands upon TM programmes, providing theoretical and practical implications for leaders and policymakers in designing enrichment activities to motivate, develop and retain talent. The authors make recommendations to inform the future design of TM programmes, revealing new opportunities to develop hidden talent and presenting a realistic and sustainable toolkit for future practice in the form of an organisational logic model

    Driving venture capital funding efficiencies through data driven models. Why is this important and what are its implications for the startup ecosystem?

    This thesis aims to test whether data models can fit the venture capital funding process better, and if they do fit, can they help improve the venture capital funding efficiency? Based on the reported results, venture capitalists can only see returns in 20% of their investments. The thesis argues that it is essential to help venture capital investment as it can help drive economic growth through investments in innovation. The thesis considers four startup scenarios and the related investment factors. The scenarios are a funded artificial intelligence startup seeking follow-on funding, a new startup seeking first funding, the survivability of a sustainability-focused startup, and the importance of patents for exit. Patents are a proxy for innovation in this thesis. Through quantitative analysis using generalized linear models, logit regressions, and t-tests, the thesis can establish that data models can identify the relative significance of funding factors. Once the factor significance is established, it can be deployed in a model. Building the machine learning model has been considered outside the scope of this thesis. A mix of academic and real-world research has been used for the data analysis of this thesis. Accelerators and venture capitalists also used some of the results to improve their own processes. Many of the models have shifted from a prediction to factor significance. This thesis implies that it could help venture capitalists plan for a 10% efficiency improvement. From an academic perspective, this study focuses on the entire life of a startup, from the first funding stage to the exit. It also links the startup ecosystem with economic development. Two additional factors from the study are the regional perspective of funding differences between Asia, Europe, and the US and that this study would include the recent economic sentiment. The impact of the funding slowdown has been measured through a focus on first funding and longitudinal validations of the data decision before the slowdown.     Multidisciplinary perspectives on Artificial Intelligence and the law

    This open access book presents an interdisciplinary, multi-authored, edited collection of chapters on Artificial Intelligence (‘AI’) and the Law. AI technology has come to play a central role in the modern data economy. Through a combination of increased computing power, the growing availability of data and the advancement of algorithms, AI has now become an umbrella term for some of the most transformational technological breakthroughs of this age. The importance of AI stems from both the opportunities that it offers and the challenges that it entails. While AI applications hold the promise of economic growth and efficiency gains, they also create significant risks and uncertainty. The potential and perils of AI have thus come to dominate modern discussions of technology and ethics – and although AI was initially allowed to largely develop without guidelines or rules, few would deny that the law is set to play a fundamental role in shaping the future of AI. As the debate over AI is far from over, the need for rigorous analysis has never been greater.     Welcoming All: Closing Racial Gaps in School Connectedness

    This mixed-methods improvement science dissertation in practice (ISDiP) explores the problem of racial gaps in school connectedness at a small suburban elementary school, where Black students report the lowest rates of connection. School connectedness is a crucial predictor of academic and social-emotional success. An exploration of scholarly and professional practice identified restorative practices coaching as a high-yield strategy to close this gap. Restorative practices is a framework of proactive and responsive practices aimed at building community and repairing harm when it occurs. Six fourth- and fifth-grade teachers participated in bi-weekly coaching sessions and classroom observations of circles, a fundamental element of restorative practices. Qualitative results found that teachers felt the coaching increased their implementation of restorative practices. Students reported statistically significant increases in school connectedness, with Black students reporting the largest increase. There was a positive correlation between teachers’ implementation of restorative practices and their perception of student connectedness. Students reported that restorative circles support their feelings of connectedness. This research is promising for using restorative practices coaching in the setting. Recommendations for future research include expanding the intervention to other grade levels and including coaching to support implementation with multi-lingual and neurodiverse learners. This ISDiP can support other schools in implementing restorative practices to close racial gaps in student connectedness

    Investigating the Relationship between Employee Perceptions of Servant Leadership and Employee Job Satisfaction, Employee Job Performance and Employee Turnover Intention in an Outsourcing Pharmaceutical Contract Manufacturing Company

    Research has begun to recognize the importance of leadership in developing strategies geared towards improving job satisfaction and employee performance while at the same time reducing turnover intention. The purpose of this quantitative correlational-predictive study was to explore servant leadership principles and its relationship with job satisfaction, job performance and employee turnover intention. Specifically, the researcher sought to understand: 1) whether there was a relationship between employee’s ratings of their manager’s servant leadership style and employee job satisfaction, employee job performance and employee turnover intention, and 2) determine if, and to what extent the specific dimensions of Van Dierendonck and Nuijten’s (2017) 18-item servant leadership instrument predict employee intrinsic, extrinsic, and overall job satisfaction. Data was collected from 194 employees. Participants in the survey included 57 females and 43 males. There were several applicable statistical conclusions drawn from the research as it pertains to servant leadership namely: a) the Pearson’s correlation coefficient indicated that servant leadership has a strong positive relationship with job satisfaction (r (86) = .731, p \u3c .001) and employee turnover intentions (r (86) =. -414, p \u3c .001, b) linear regression analysis showed that servant leadership predicts overall job satisfaction (R² =. 536, p \u3c .001) which means that 53.6% of job satisfaction is attributed to servant leadership. Together, these findings are consistent with past research which used Van Dierendonck and Nuijten’s (2017) 18-item servant leadership instrument to investigate the same variables but in different industries. Findings did not reveal that a relationship existed between servant leadership and job performance. Further research in this area is recommended. This study contributes new knowledge into the academic and outsourcing pharmaceutical manufacturing industry. By providing a snapshot of how servant leadership principles impact job satisfaction and turnover intention, leaders and decision makers now have empirical evidence to introduce this leadership model into the outsourcing pharmaceutical manufacturing industries and similar industries as a viable leadership model aimed at improving both employee job satisfaction and turnover intention
