    Meta-critical thinking, paradox, and probabilities

    There is as much lack of clarity concerning what “critical thinking” involves, even among those charged with teaching it, as there is consensus that we need more emphasis on it in both academia and society. There is an apparent need to think critically about critical thinking, an exercise that might be called meta-critical thinking. It involves emphasizing a practice in terms of which “critical thinking” is helpfully carried out and clarifying one or more of the concepts in terms of which “critical thinking” is usually defined. The practice is distinction making and the concept that of evidence. Science advances by constructing models that explain real-world processes. Once multiple potential models have been distinguished, there remains the task of identifying which models match the real-world process better than others. Since statistical inference has in large part to do with showing how data provide support, i.e., furnish evidence, that the model/hypothesis is more or less likely while still uncertain, we turn to it to help make the concept more precise and thereby useful. In fact, two of the leading methodological paradigms—Bayesian and likelihood—can be taken to provide answers to the questions of the extent to which as well as how data provide evidence for conclusions. Examining these answers in some detail is a highly promising way to make progress. We do so by way of the analysis of three well-known statistical paradoxes—the Lottery, the Old Evidence, and Humphreys’—and the identification of distinctions on the basis of which their plausible resolutions depend. These distinctions, among others between belief and evidence and different concepts of probability, in turn have more general applications. They are applied here to two highly contested public policy issues—the efficacy of COVID vaccinations and the fossil fuel cause of climate change. Our aim is to provide some tools, they might be called “healthy habits of mind,” with which to assess statistical arguments, in particular with respect to the nature and extent of the evidence they furnish, and to illustrate their use in well-defined ways

    Computation of the von Neumann entropy of large matrices via trace estimators and rational Krylov methods

    We consider the problem of approximating the von Neumann entropy of a large, sparse, symmetric positive semidefinite matrix AA, defined as tr⁡(f(A))\operatorname{tr}(f(A)) where f(x)=−xlog⁡xf(x)=-x\log x. After establishing some useful properties of this matrix function, we consider the use of both polynomial and rational Krylov subspace algorithms within two types of approximations methods, namely, randomized trace estimators and probing techniques based on graph colorings. We develop error bounds and heuristics which are employed in the implementation of the algorithms. Numerical experiments on density matrices of different types of networks illustrate the performance of the methods.Comment: 32 pages, 10 figure

In this field, sophisticated and new treatments are now required for improving patients’ quality of life; in livestock animals, the goal of regenerative medicine is to improve not only animal welfare but also the quality of production, aiming to preserve human health. The contributions collected in this book concern both laboratory research and clinical applications of mesenchymal stem/stromal cells.     Across more than two centuries Afro-America has created a huge and dazzling variety of literary self-expression. Designs of Blackness provides less a narrative literary history than, precisely, a series of mappings—each literary-critical and comparative while at the same time offering cultural and historical context. This carefully re-edited version of the 1998 publication opens with an estimation of earliest African American voice in the names of Phillis Wheatley and her contemporaries. It then takes up the huge span of autobiography from Frederick Douglass through to Maya Angelou. "Harlem on My Mind," which follows, sets out the literary contours of America’s premier black city. Womanism, Alice Walker’s presiding term, is given full due in an analysis of fiction from Harriet E. Wilson to Toni Morrison. Richard Wright is approached not as some regulation "realist" but as a more inward, at times near-surreal, author. Decadology has its risks but the 1940s has rarely been approached as a unique era of war and peace and especially in African American texts. Beat Generation work usually adheres to Ginsberg and Kerouac, but black Beat writing invites its own chapter in the names of Amiri Baraka, Ted Joans and Bob Kaufman. The 1960s has long become a mythic change-decade, and in few greater respects than as a black theatre both of the stage and politics. In Leon Forrest African America had a figure of the postmodern turn: his work is explored in its own right and for how it takes its place in the context of other reflexive black fiction. "African American Fictions of Passing" unpacks the whole deceptive trope of "race" in writing from Williams Wells Brown through to Charles Johnson. The two newly added chapters pursue African American literary achievement into the Obama-Trump century, fiction from Octavia Butler to Darryl Pinkney, poetry from Rita Dove to Kevin Young

    Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) Meets Deep Learning

    This reprint focuses on the application of the combination of synthetic aperture radars and depth learning technology. It aims to further promote the development of SAR image intelligent interpretation technology. A synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is an important active microwave imaging sensor, whose all-day and all-weather working capacity give it an important place in the remote sensing community. Since the United States launched the first SAR satellite, SAR has received much attention in the remote sensing community, e.g., in geological exploration, topographic mapping, disaster forecast, and traffic monitoring. It is valuable and meaningful, therefore, to study SAR-based remote sensing applications. In recent years, deep learning represented by convolution neural networks has promoted significant progress in the computer vision community, e.g., in face recognition, the driverless field and Internet of things (IoT). Deep learning can enable computational models with multiple processing layers to learn data representations with multiple-level abstractions. This can greatly improve the performance of various applications. This reprint provides a platform for researchers to handle the above significant challenges and present their innovative and cutting-edge research results when applying deep learning to SAR in various manuscript types, e.g., articles, letters, reviews and technical reports

    Universality and Examples in the Context of Functorial Semi-Norms

    Let F: C → Vect be a functor from a category C to vector spaces over a normed field. A functorial semi-norm on F is a factorization of F over the forgetful functor snVect → Vect, where snVect denotes the corresponding category of semi-normed vector spaces. Functorial semi-norms, in particular the ℓÂč-semi-norm, on singular homology were introduced by Gromov in his study of simplicial volume of manifolds. The latter is a homotopy invariant that, roughly speaking, measures the complexity of the fundamental class of an oriented closed connected manifold. In the present thesis, we investigate three aspects of functorial semi-norms: Universal functorial semi-norms (joint work with Clara Löh). For a fixed functor, we define a relation among all its functorial semi-norms, whose minimal elements we call universal. We then prove certain existence results of such universal functorial semi-norms. Inflexibility from a computational perspective. Crowley and Löh established a bidirectional correspondence between functorial semi-norms on singular homology and so-called inflexible manifolds. The construction of such manifolds is based on the construction and study of certain differential graded algebras, which are purely algebraic objects. As such they are very amenable to computations, not only by humans but also via computer programs. We present fragments of a software that facilitates such computations, some new examples that we found in this way, and two results about algorithmic decidability. Excisive approximation of ℓÂč-homology. It is a well-known fact, that ℓÂč-homology does not satisfy the excision axiom in the sense of Eilenberg and Steenrod. On the other hand, the fact that singular homology satisfies excision is already visible at the level of the singular chain complex functor, namely the latter is excisive in the sense of Goodwillie calculus. The latter, however, also provides the framework for constructing a universal (or best) excisive approximation to a given functor. We apply this theory to the ℓÂč-chain complex functor and show that its excisive approximation vanishes. In appendices, we include a proof of the fact that the singular chain complex functor is excisive in the sense of Goodwillie calculus, and we relate this abstract form of excision to the classical one in the form of Mayer-Vietoris sequences

    IMAGINING, GUIDING, PLAYING INTIMACY: - A Theory of Character Intimacy Games -

    Within the landscape of Japanese media production, and video game production in particular, there is a niche comprising video games centered around establishing, developing, and fulfilling imagined intimate relationships with anime-manga characters. Such niche, although very significant in production volume and lifespan, is left unexplored or underexplored. When it is not, it is subsumed within the scope of wider anime-manga media. This obscures the nature of such video games, alternatively identified with descriptors including but not limited to ‘visual novel’, ‘dating simulator’ and ‘adult computer game’. As games centered around developing intimacy with characters, they present specific ensembles of narrative content, aesthetics and software mechanics. These ensembles are aimed at eliciting in users what are, by all intents and purposes, parasocial phenomena towards the game’s characters. In other words, these software products encourage players to develop affective and bodily responses towards characters. They are set in a way that is coherent with shared, circulating scripts for sexual and intimate interaction to guide player imaginative action. This study defines games such as the above as ‘character intimacy games’, video game software where traversal is contingent on players knowingly establishing, developing, and fulfilling intimate bonds with fictional characters. To do so, however, player must recognize themselves as playing that type of game, and to be looking to develop that kind of response towards the game’s characters. Character Intimacy Games are contingent upon player developing affective and bodily responses, and thus presume that players are, at the very least, non-hostile towards their development. This study approaches Japanese character intimacy games as its corpus, and operates at the intersection of studies of communication, AMO studies and games studies. The study articulates a research approach based on the double need of approaching single works of significance amidst a general scarcity of scholarly background on the subject. It juxtaposes data-driven approaches derived from fan-curated databases – The Visual Novel Database and Erogescape -Erogē Hyƍron KĆ«kan – with a purpose-created ludo-hermeneutic process. By deploying an observation of character intimacy games through fan-curated data and building ludo-hermeneutics on the resulting ontology, this study argues that character intimacy games are video games where traversal is contingent on players knowingly establishing, developing, and fulfilling intimate bonds with fictional characters and recognizing themselves as doing so. To produce such conditions, the assemblage of software mechanics and narrative content in such games facilitates intimacy between player and characters. This is, ultimately, conductive to the emergence of parasocial phenomena. Parasocial phenomena, in turn, are deployed as an integral assumption regarding player activity within the game’s wider assemblage of narrative content and software mechanics

    A Primer on Seq2Seq Models for Generative Chatbots

    The recent spread of Deep Learning-based solutions for Artificial Intelligence and the development of Large Language Models has pushed forwards significantly the Natural Language Processing area. The approach has quickly evolved in the last ten years, deeply affecting NLP, from low-level text pre-processing tasks –such as tokenisation or POS tagging– to high-level, complex NLP applications like machine translation and chatbots. This paper examines recent trends in the development of open-domain data-driven generative chatbots, focusing on the Seq2Seq architectures. Such architectures are compatible with multiple learning approaches, ranging from supervised to reinforcement and, in the last years, allowed to realise very engaging open-domain chatbots. Not only do these architectures allow to directly output the next turn in a conversation but, to some extent, they also allow to control the style or content of the response. To offer a complete view on the subject, we examine possible architecture implementations as well as training and evaluation approaches. Additionally, we provide information about the openly available corpora to train and evaluate such models and about the current and past chatbot competitions. Finally, we present some insights on possible future directions, given the current research status
