Multiband Spectrum Access: Great Promises for Future Cognitive Radio Networks
Cognitive radio has been widely considered as one of the prominent solutions
to tackle the spectrum scarcity. While the majority of existing research has
focused on single-band cognitive radio, multiband cognitive radio represents
great promises towards implementing efficient cognitive networks compared to
single-based networks. Multiband cognitive radio networks (MB-CRNs) are
expected to significantly enhance the network's throughput and provide better
channel maintenance by reducing handoff frequency. Nevertheless, the wideband
front-end and the multiband spectrum access impose a number of challenges yet
to overcome. This paper provides an in-depth analysis on the recent
advancements in multiband spectrum sensing techniques, their limitations, and
possible future directions to improve them. We study cooperative communications
for MB-CRNs to tackle a fundamental limit on diversity and sampling. We also
investigate several limits and tradeoffs of various design parameters for
MB-CRNs. In addition, we explore the key MB-CRNs performance metrics that
differ from the conventional metrics used for single-band based networks.Comment: 22 pages, 13 figures; published in the Proceedings of the IEEE

Adaptive Non-uniform Compressive Sampling for Time-varying Signals
In this paper, adaptive non-uniform compressive sampling (ANCS) of
time-varying signals, which are sparse in a proper basis, is introduced. ANCS
employs the measurements of previous time steps to distribute the sensing
energy among coefficients more intelligently. To this aim, a Bayesian inference
method is proposed that does not require any prior knowledge of importance
levels of coefficients or sparsity of the signal. Our numerical simulations
show that ANCS is able to achieve the desired non-uniform recovery of the
signal. Moreover, if the signal is sparse in canonical basis, ANCS can reduce
the number of required measurements significantly.Comment: 6 pages, 8 figures, Conference on Information Sciences and Systems

Sequential Sensing with Model Mismatch
We characterize the performance of sequential information guided sensing,
Info-Greedy Sensing, when there is a mismatch between the true signal model and
the assumed model, which may be a sample estimate. In particular, we consider a
setup where the signal is low-rank Gaussian and the measurements are taken in
the directions of eigenvectors of the covariance matrix in a decreasing order
of eigenvalues. We establish a set of performance bounds when a mismatched
covariance matrix is used, in terms of the gap of signal posterior entropy, as
well as the additional amount of power required to achieve the same signal
recovery precision. Based on this, we further study how to choose an
initialization for Info-Greedy Sensing using the sample covariance matrix, or
using an efficient covariance sketching scheme.Comment: Submitted to IEEE for publicatio
Channel Impulse Response-based Distributed Physical Layer Authentication
In this preliminary work, we study the problem of {\it distributed}
authentication in wireless networks. Specifically, we consider a system where
multiple Bob (sensor) nodes listen to a channel and report their {\it
correlated} measurements to a Fusion Center (FC) which makes the ultimate
authentication decision. For the feature-based authentication at the FC,
channel impulse response has been utilized as the device fingerprint.
Additionally, the {\it correlated} measurements by the Bob nodes allow us to
invoke Compressed sensing to significantly reduce the reporting overhead to the
FC. Numerical results show that: i) the detection performance of the FC is
superior to that of a single Bob-node, ii) compressed sensing leads to at least
overhead reduction on the reporting channel at the expense of a small
( dB) SNR margin to achieve the same detection performance.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, accepted for presentation at IEEE VTC 2017 Sprin
