Sequential Behavior Pattern Discovery with Frequent Episode Mining and Wireless Sensor Network

[EN] By recognizing patterns in occupants' daily activities, building systems are able to optimize and personalize services. Established technologies are available for data collection and pattern mining, but they all share the drawback that the methodology used for data collection tends to be ill suited for pattern recognition. For this research, we developed a bespoke WSN and combined it with a compact data format for frequent episode mining to overcome this obstacle. The proposed framework has been evaluated with both synthetic data from a smart home simulator and with real data from a self-organizing WSN in a student's home. We are able to demonstrate that the framework is capable of discovering sequential patterns in heterogeneous sensor data. With corresponding scenarios, patterns in daily activities can be deduced. The framework is self-contained, scalable, and energy-efficient, and is thus applicable in multiple building system settings. The authors gratefully acknowledge financial support from the National Natural Science Foundation of China (no. 51408442 and no. 61572231).Li; Li, X.; Lu, Z.; Lloret, J.; Song, H. The Internet of Things (IoT) and cloud technologies have been the main focus of recent research, allowing for the accumulation of a vast amount of data generated from this diverse environment. These data include without any doubt priceless knowledge if could correctly discovered and correlated in an efficient manner. Data mining algorithms can be applied to the Internet of Things (IoT) to extract hidden information from the massive amounts of data that are generated by IoT and are thought to have high business value. In this paper, the most important data mining approaches covering classification, clustering, association analysis, time series analysis, and outlier analysis from the knowledge will be covered. Additionally, a survey of recent work in in this direction is included. Another significant challenges in the field are collecting, storing, and managing the large number of devices along with their associated features. In this paper, a deep look on the data mining for the IoT platforms will be given concentrating on real applications found in the literatur

In  the  last  few  years,  with  the  emergence  of ambient assisted living, the study of human behavioral pattern took  a  wide  interest  from  research  communities  around  the world. In many literatures, pattern recognition was widely adopted approach to implements in human behavior study from computing perspective. Pattern recognition brings a promising results in terms of accuracy for modeling human behavior. But the problem with this approach is the complexity of knowledge representation  which  formulated  in  mathematical  model.  In turns, a correction by the experts is hardly conducted. In another hand, gathering a graphical insight is  not a trivial task. This paper  investigate the use of process mining technology to gives an alternative to such problems. Process mining is data-driven approach to infer a graphical representation of any kind of process. In terms of human behavior, process can be defined as sequences of activities performed by human on daily basis. From the conducted experiments process mining was shown a potential use to infer a human daily activity pattern in a graphical representation

WiFi Miner: An online apriori and sensor based wireless network Intrusion Detection System

This thesis proposes an Intrusion Detection System, WiFi Miner, which applies an infrequent pattern association rule mining Apriori technique to wireless network packets captured through hardware sensors for purposes of real time detection of intrusive or anomalous packets. Contributions of the proposed system includes effectively adapting an efficient data mining association rule technique to important problem of intrusion detection in a wireless network environment using hardware sensors, providing a solution that eliminates the need for hard-to-obtain training data in this environment, providing increased intrusion detection rate and reduction of false alarms. The proposed system, WiFi Miner, solution approach is to find frequent and infrequent patterns on pre-processed wireless connection records using infrequent pattern finding Apriori algorithm also proposed by this thesis. The proposed Online Apriori-Infrequent algorithm improves the join and prune step of the traditional Apriori algorithm with a rule that avoids joining itemsets not likely to produce frequent itemsets as their results, thereby improving efficiency and run times significantly. A positive anomaly score is assigned to each packet (record) for each infrequent pattern found while a negative anomaly score is assigned for each frequent pattern found. So, a record with final positive anomaly score is considered as anomaly based on the presence of more infrequent patterns than frequent patterns found

T-Patterns Revisited: Mining for Temporal Patterns in Sensor Data

The trend to use large amounts of simple sensors as opposed to a few complex sensors to monitor places and systems creates a need for temporal pattern mining algorithms to work on such data. The methods that try to discover re-usable and interpretable patterns in temporal event data have several shortcomings. We contrast several recent approaches to the problem, and extend the T-Pattern algorithm, which was previously applied for detection of sequential patterns in behavioural sciences. The temporal complexity of the T-pattern approach is prohibitive in the scenarios we consider. We remedy this with a statistical model to obtain a fast and robust algorithm to find patterns in temporal data. We test our algorithm on a recent database collected with passive infrared sensors with millions of events

With the rapid development in sensing technology, data mining, and machine learning fields for human health monitoring, it became possible to enable monitoring of personal motion and vital signs in a manner that minimizes the disruption of an individual’s daily routine and assist individuals with difficulties to live independently at home. A primary difficulty that researchers confront is acquiring an adequate amount of labeled data for model training and validation purposes. Therefore, activity discovery handles the problem that activity labels are not available using approaches based on sequence mining and clustering. In this paper, we introduce an unsupervised method for discovering activities from a network of motion detectors in a smart home setting. First, we present an intra-day clustering algorithm to find frequent sequential patterns within a day. As a second step, we present an inter-day clustering algorithm to find the common frequent patterns between days. Furthermore, we refine the patterns to have more compressed and defined cluster characterizations. Finally, we track the occurrences of various regular routines to monitor the functional health in an individual’s patterns and lifestyle. We evaluate our methods on two public data sets captured in real-life settings from two apartments during seven-month and three-month periods
