Higher-order Linear Logic Programming of Categorial Deduction

We show how categorial deduction can be implemented in higher-order (linear) logic programming, thereby realising parsing as deduction for the associative and non-associative Lambek calculi. This provides a method of solution to the parsing problem of Lambek categorial grammar applicable to a variety of its extensions.Comment: 8 pages LaTeX, uses eaclap.sty, to appear EACL9

    Cyclic theories

We describe a geometric theory classified by Connes-Consani's epicylic topos and two related theories respectively classified by the cyclic topos and by the topos [N,Set][{\mathbb N}^{\ast}, \mathbf{Set}].Comment: 25 page

Involutive Nonassociative Lambek Calculus: Sequent Systems and Complexity

    Get PDF
In [5] we study Nonassociative Lambek Calculus (NL) augmented with De Morgan negation, satisfying the double negation and contraposition laws. This logic, introduced by de Grooté and Lamarche [10], is called Classical Non-Associative Lambek Calculus (CNL). Here we study a weaker logic InNL, i.e. NL with two involutive negations. We present a one-sided sequent system for InNL, admitting cut elimination. We also prove that InNL is PTIME.Zadanie „ Wdrożenie platformy Open Journal System dla czasopisma „ Bulletin of the Section of Logic” finansowane w ramach umowy 948/P-DUN/2016 ze środków Ministra Nauki i Szkolnictwa Wyższego przeznaczonych na działalność upowszechniającą naukę

    Groupoid Semantics for Thermal Computing

A groupoid semantics is presented for systems with both logical and thermal degrees of freedom. We apply this to a syntactic model for encryption, and obtain an algebraic characterization of the heat produced by the encryption function, as predicted by Landauer's principle. Our model has a linear representation theory that reveals an underlying quantum semantics, giving for the first time a functorial classical model for quantum teleportation and other quantum phenomena.Comment: We describe a groupoid model for thermodynamic computation, and a quantization procedure that turns encrypted communication into quantum teleportation. Everything is done using higher category theor

New mathematical foundations for AI and Alife: Are the necessary conditions for animal consciousness sufficient for the design of intelligent machines?

    Get PDF
Rodney Brooks' call for 'new mathematics' to revitalize the disciplines of artificial intelligence and artificial life can be answered by adaptation of what Adams has called 'the informational turn in philosophy' and by the novel perspectives that program gives into empirical studies of animal cognition and consciousness. Going backward from the necessary conditions communication theory imposes on cognition and consciousness to sufficient conditions for machine design is, however, an extraordinarily difficult engineering task. The most likely use of the first generations of conscious machines will be to model the various forms of psychopathology, since we have little or no understanding of how consciousness is stabilized in humans or other animals

Protein folding disorders: Toward a basic biological paradigm

    Get PDF
Mechanistic 'physics' models of protein folding fail to account for the observed spectrum of protein folding and aggregation disorders, suggesting that a more appropriately biological paradigm will be needed for understanding the etiology, prevention, and treatment of these diseases
