Universal Sequencing on an Unreliable Machine
We consider scheduling on an unreliable machine that may experience unexpected changes in processing speed or even full breakdowns. Our objective is to minimize ∑ wjf(Cj) for any nondecreasing, nonnegative, differentiable cost function f(Cj). We aim for a universal solution that performs well without adaptation for all cost functions for any possible machine behavior. We design a deterministic algorithm that finds a universal scheduling sequence with a solution value within 4 times the value of an optimal clairvoyant algorithm that knows the machine behavior in advance. A randomized version of this algorithm attains in expectation a ratio of e. We also show that both performance guarantees are best possible for any unbounded cost function. Our algorithms can be adapted to run in polynomial time with slightly increased cost. When jobs have individual release dates, the situation changes drastically. Even if all weights are equal, there are instances for which any universal solution is a factor of Ω(log n / log log n) worse than an optimal sequence for any unbounded cost function. Motivated by this hardness, we study the special case when the processing time of each job is proportional to its weight. We present a nontrivial algorithm with a small constant performance guarantee
Optimal Algorithms for Scheduling under Time-of-Use Tariffs
We consider a natural generalization of classical scheduling problems in
which using a time unit for processing a job causes some time-dependent cost
which must be paid in addition to the standard scheduling cost. We study the
scheduling objectives of minimizing the makespan and the sum of (weighted)
completion times. It is not difficult to derive a polynomial-time algorithm for
preemptive scheduling to minimize the makespan on unrelated machines. The
problem of minimizing the total (weighted) completion time is considerably
harder, even on a single machine. We present a polynomial-time algorithm that
computes for any given sequence of jobs an optimal schedule, i.e., the optimal
set of time-slots to be used for scheduling jobs according to the given
sequence. This result is based on dynamic programming using a subtle analysis
of the structure of optimal solutions and a potential function argument. With
this algorithm, we solve the unweighted problem optimally in polynomial time.
For the more general problem, in which jobs may have individual weights, we
develop a polynomial-time approximation scheme (PTAS) based on a dual
scheduling approach introduced for scheduling on a machine of varying speed. As
the weighted problem is strongly NP-hard, our PTAS is the best possible

Dynamic scheduling in a multi-product manufacturing system
To remain competitive in global marketplace, manufacturing companies need to improve their operational practices. One of the methods to increase competitiveness in manufacturing is by implementing proper scheduling system. This is important to enable job orders to be completed on time, minimize waiting time and maximize utilization of equipment and machineries. The dynamics of real manufacturing system are very complex in nature. Schedules developed based on deterministic algorithms are unable to effectively deal with uncertainties in demand and capacity. Significant differences can be found between planned schedules and actual schedule implementation. This study attempted to develop a scheduling system that is able to react quickly and reliably for accommodating changes in product demand and manufacturing capacity. A case study, 6 by 6 job shop scheduling problem was adapted with uncertainty elements added to the data sets. A simulation model was designed and implemented using ARENA simulation package to generate various job shop scheduling scenarios. Their performances were evaluated using scheduling rules, namely, first-in-first-out (FIFO), earliest due date (EDD), and shortest processing time (SPT). An artificial neural network (ANN) model was developed and trained using various scheduling scenarios generated by ARENA simulation. The experimental results suggest that the ANN scheduling model can provided moderately reliable prediction results for limited scenarios when predicting the number completed jobs, maximum flowtime, average machine utilization, and average length of queue. This study has provided better understanding on the effects of changes in demand and capacity on the job shop schedules. Areas for further study includes: (i) Fine tune the proposed ANN scheduling model (ii) Consider more variety of job shop environment (iii) Incorporate an expert system for interpretation of results. The theoretical framework proposed in this study can be used as a basis for further investigation
A Survey on Cost and Profit Oriented Assembly Line Balancing

Scheduling over Scenarios on Two Machines
We consider scheduling problems over scenarios where the goal is to find a
single assignment of the jobs to the machines which performs well over all
possible scenarios. Each scenario is a subset of jobs that must be executed in
that scenario and all scenarios are given explicitly. The two objectives that
we consider are minimizing the maximum makespan over all scenarios and
minimizing the sum of the makespans of all scenarios. For both versions, we
give several approximation algorithms and lower bounds on their
approximability. With this research into optimization problems over scenarios,

A survey of the machine interference problem
This paper surveys the research published on the machine interference problem since the 1985 review by Stecke & Aronson. After introducing the basic model, we discuss the literature along several dimensions. We then note how research has evolved since the 1985 review, including a trend towards the modelling of stochastic (rather than deterministic) systems and the corresponding use of more advanced queuing methods for analysis. Comparative simulation study of production scheduling in the hybrid and the parallel flow
Scheduling is one of the most important decisions in production control. An approach is proposed for supporting users to solve scheduling problems, by choosing the combination of physical manufacturing system configuration and the material handling system settings. The approach considers two alternative manufacturing scheduling configurations in a two stage product oriented manufacturing system, exploring the hybrid flow shop (HFS) and the parallel flow shop (PFS) environments. For illustrating the application of the proposed approach an industrial case from the automotive components industry is studied. The main aim of this research to compare results of study of production scheduling in the hybrid and the parallel flow, taking into account the makespan minimization criterion. Thus the HFS and the PFS performance is compared and analyzed, mainly in terms of the makespan, as the transportation times vary. The study shows that the performance HFS is clearly better when the work stations' processing times are unbalanced, either in nature or as a consequence of the addition of transport times just to one of the work station processing time but loses advantage, becoming worse than the performance of the PFS configuration when the work stations' processing times are balanced, either in nature or as a consequence of the addition of transport times added on the work stations' processing times.
