Joint Multi-Pitch Detection Using Harmonic Envelope Estimation for Polyphonic Music Transcription
In this paper, a method for automatic transcription of music signals based on joint multiple-F0 estimation is proposed. As a time-frequency representation, the constant-Q resonator time-frequency image is employed, while a novel noise suppression technique based on pink noise assumption is applied in a preprocessing step. In the multiple-F0 estimation stage, the optimal tuning and inharmonicity parameters are computed and a salience function is proposed in order to select pitch candidates. For each pitch candidate combination, an overlapping partial treatment procedure is used, which is based on a novel spectral envelope estimation procedure for the log-frequency domain, in order to compute the harmonic envelope of candidate pitches. In order to select the optimal pitch combination for each time frame, a score function is proposed which combines spectral and temporal characteristics of the candidate pitches and also aims to suppress harmonic errors. For postprocessing, hidden Markov models (HMMs) and conditional random fields (CRFs) trained on MIDI data are employed, in order to boost transcription accuracy. The system was trained on isolated piano sounds from the MAPS database and was tested on classic and jazz recordings from the RWC database, as well as on recordings from a Disklavier piano. A comparison with several state-of-the-art systems is provided using a variety of error metrics, where encouraging results are indicated
The eigenspectra of Indian musical drums
In a family of drums used in the Indian subcontinent, the circular drum head
is made of material of non-uniform density. Remarkably, and in contrast to a
circular membrane of uniform density, the low eigenmodes of the non-uniform
membrane are harmonic. In this work we model the drum head by a non-uniform
membrane whose density varies smoothly between two prescribed values. Using a
Fourier-Chebyshev spectral collocation method we obtain the eigenmodes and
eigenvalues of the drum head. For a suitable choice of parameters, which we
find by optimising a cost function, the eigenspectra obtained from our model
are in excellent agreement with experimental values. Our model and the
numerical method should find application in numerical sound synthesis
The development of corpus-based computer assisted composition program and its application for instrumental music composition
In the last 20 years, we have seen the nourishing environment for the development of
music software using a corpus of audio data expanding significantly, namely that synthesis
techniques producing electronic sounds, and supportive tools for creative activities
are the driving forces to the growth. Some software produces a sequence of sounds by
means of synthesizing a chunk of source audio data retrieved from an audio database
according to a rule. Since the matching of sources is processed according to their descriptive
features extracted by FFT analysis, the quality of the result is significantly
influenced by the outcomes of the Audio Analysis, Segmentation, and Decomposition.
Also, the synthesis process often requires a considerable amount of sample data and
this can become an obstacle to establish easy, inexpensive, and user-friendly applications
on various kinds of devices. Therefore, it is crucial to consider how to treat the
data and construct an efficient database for the synthesis. We aim to apply corpusbased
synthesis techniques to develop a Computer Assisted Composition program, and
to investigate the actual application of the program on ensemble pieces. The goal of
this research is to apply the program to the instrumental music composition, refine its
function, and search new avenues for innovative compositional method

Asteroseismology is the determination of the interior structures of stars by
using their oscillations as seismic waves. Simple explanations of the
astrophysical background and some basic theoretical considerations needed in
this rapidly evolving field are followed by introductions to the most important
concepts and methods on the basis of example. Previous and potential

Quantitative analysis of harmonic convergence in mosquito auditory interactions
This article analyses the hearing and behaviour of mosquitoes in the context of inter-individual acoustic interactions. The acoustic interactions of tethered live pairs of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, from same and opposite sex mosquitoes of the species, are recorded on independent and unique audio channels, together with the response of tethered individual mosquitoes to playbacks of pre-recorded flight tones of lone or paired individuals. A time-dependent representation of each mosquito's non-stationary wing beat frequency signature is constructed, based on Hilbert spectral analysis. A range of algorithmic tools is developed to automatically analyse these data, and used to perform a robust quantitative identification of the 'harmonic convergence' phenomenon. The results suggest that harmonic convergence is an active phenomenon, which does not occur by chance. It occurs for live pairs, as well as for lone individuals responding to playback recordings, whether from the same or opposite sex. Male-female behaviour is dominated by frequency convergence at a wider range of harmonic combinations than previously reported, and requires participation from both partners in the duet. New evidence is found to show that male-male interactions are more varied than strict frequency avoidance. Rather, they can be divided into two groups: convergent pairs, typified by tightly bound wing beat frequencies, and divergent pairs, that remain widely spaced in the frequency domain. Overall, the results reveal that mosquito acoustic interaction is a delicate and intricate time-dependent active process that involves both individuals, takes place at many different frequencies, and which merits further enquiry
