    Multichannel high resolution NMF for modelling convolutive mixtures of non-stationary signals in the time-frequency domain

    Several probabilistic models involving latent components have been proposed for modeling time-frequency (TF) representations of audio signals such as spectrograms, notably in the nonnegative matrix factorization (NMF) literature. Among them, the recent high-resolution NMF (HR-NMF) model is able to take both phases and local correlations in each frequency band into account, and its potential has been illustrated in applications such as source separation and audio inpainting. In this paper, HR-NMF is extended to multichannel signals and to convolutive mixtures. The new model can represent a variety of stationary and non-stationary signals, including autoregressive moving average (ARMA) processes and mixtures of damped sinusoids. A fast variational expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm is proposed to estimate the enhanced model. This algorithm is applied to piano signals, and proves capable of accurately modeling reverberation, restoring missing observations, and separating pure tones with close frequencies

    Audio source separation into the wild

    International audienceThis review chapter is dedicated to multichannel audio source separation in real-life environment. We explore some of the major achievements in the field and discuss some of the remaining challenges. We will explore several important practical scenarios, e.g. moving sources and/or microphones, varying number of sources and sensors, high reverberation levels, spatially diffuse sources, and synchronization problems. Several applications such as smart assistants, cellular phones, hearing aids and robots, will be discussed. Our perspectives on the future of the field will be given as concluding remarks of this chapter

    Speech dereverberation and speaker separation using microphone arrays in realistic environments

    This thesis concentrates on comparing novel and existing dereverberation and speaker separation techniques using multiple corpora, including a new corpus collected using a microphone array. Many corpora currently used for these techniques are recorded using head-mounted microphones in anechoic chambers. This novel corpus contains recordings with noise and reverberation made in office and workshop environments. Novel algorithms present a different way of approximating the reverberation, producing results that are competitive with existing algorithms. Dereverberation is evaluated using seven correlation-based algorithms and applied to two different corpora. Three of these are novel algorithms (Hs NTF, Cauchy WPE and Cauchy MIMO WPE). Both non-learning and learning algorithms are tested, with the learning algorithms performing better. For single and multi-channel speaker separation, unsupervised non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) algorithms are compared using three cost functions combined with sparsity, convolution and direction of arrival. The results show that the choice of cost function is important for improving the separation result. Furthermore, six different supervised deep learning algorithms are applied to single channel speaker separation. Historic information improves the result. When comparing NMF to deep learning, NMF is able to converge faster to a solution and provides a better result for the corpora used in this thesis

    SELD-TCN: Sound Event Localization & Detection via Temporal Convolutional Networks

    The understanding of the surrounding environment plays a critical role in autonomous robotic systems, such as self-driving cars. Extensive research has been carried out concerning visual perception. Yet, to obtain a more complete perception of the environment, autonomous systems of the future should also take acoustic information into account. Recent sound event localization and detection (SELD) frameworks utilize convolutional recurrent neural networks (CRNNs). However, considering the recurrent nature of CRNNs, it becomes challenging to implement them efficiently on embedded hardware. Not only are their computations strenuous to parallelize, but they also require high memory bandwidth and large memory buffers. In this work, we develop a more robust and hardware-friendly novel architecture based on a temporal convolutional network(TCN). The proposed framework (SELD-TCN) outperforms the state-of-the-art SELDnet performance on four different datasets. Moreover, SELD-TCN achieves 4x faster training time per epoch and 40x faster inference time on an ordinary graphics processing unit (GPU).Comment: 5 pages, 3 tables, 2 figures.     Microphone array signal processing for robot audition

    Robot audition for humanoid robots interacting naturally with humans in an unconstrained real-world environment is a hitherto unsolved challenge. The recorded microphone signals are usually distorted by background and interfering noise sources (speakers) as well as room reverberation. In addition, the movements of a robot and its actuators cause ego-noise which degrades the recorded signals significantly. The movement of the robot body and its head also complicates the detection and tracking of the desired, possibly moving, sound sources of interest. This paper presents an overview of the concepts in microphone array processing for robot audition and some recent achievements

    A Variational EM Algorithm for the Separation of Moving Sound Sources

    International audienceThis paper addresses the problem of separation of moving sound sources. We propose a probabilistic framework based on the complex Gaussian model combined with non-negative matrix factorization. The properties associated with moving sources are modeled using time-varying mixing filters described by a stochastic temporal process. We present a variational expectation-maximization (VEM) algorithm that employs a Kalman smoother to estimate the mixing filters. The sound sources are separated by means of Wiener filters, built from the estimators provided by the proposed VEM algorithm. Preliminary experiments with simulated data show that, while for static sources we obtain results comparable with the base-line method of Ozerov et al., in the case of moving source our method outperforms a piece-wise version of the baseline method
