The Iray Light Transport Simulation and Rendering System
While ray tracing has become increasingly common and path tracing is well
understood by now, a major challenge lies in crafting an easy-to-use and
efficient system implementing these technologies. Following a purely
physically-based paradigm while still allowing for artistic workflows, the Iray
light transport simulation and rendering system allows for rendering complex
scenes by the push of a button and thus makes accurate light transport
simulation widely available. In this document we discuss the challenges and
implementation choices that follow from our primary design decisions,
demonstrating that such a rendering system can be made a practical, scalable,
and efficient real-world application that has been adopted by various companies
across many fields and is in use by many industry professionals today
The effects of belongingness on the Simultaneous Lightness Contrast: A virtual reality study
Simultaneous Lightness Contrast (SLC) is the phenomenon whereby a grey patch on a dark background appears lighter than an equal patch on a light background. Interestingly, the lightness difference between these patches undergoes substantial augmentation when the two backgrounds are patterned, thereby forming the articulated-SLC display. There are two main interpretations of these phenomena: The midlevel interpretation maintains that the visual system groups the luminance within a set of contiguous frameworks, whilst the high-level one claims that the visual system splits the luminance into separate overlapping layers corresponding to separate physical contributions. This research aimed to test these two interpretations by systematically manipulating the viewing distance and the horizontal distance between the backgrounds of both the articulated and plain SLC displays. An immersive 3D Virtual Reality system was employed to reproduce identical alignment and distances, as well as isolating participants
from interfering luminance. Results showed that reducing the viewing distance resulted in increased contrast
in both the plain- and articulated-SLC displays and that, increasing the horizontal distance between the backgrounds resulted in decreased contrast in the articulated condition but increased contrast in the plain condition. These results suggest that a comprehensive lightness theory should combine the two interpretations
Automatic Model Based Dataset Generation for Fast and Accurate Crop and Weeds Detection
Selective weeding is one of the key challenges in the field of agriculture
robotics. To accomplish this task, a farm robot should be able to accurately
detect plants and to distinguish them between crop and weeds. Most of the
promising state-of-the-art approaches make use of appearance-based models
trained on large annotated datasets. Unfortunately, creating large agricultural
datasets with pixel-level annotations is an extremely time consuming task,
actually penalizing the usage of data-driven techniques. In this paper, we face
this problem by proposing a novel and effective approach that aims to
dramatically minimize the human intervention needed to train the detection and
classification algorithms. The idea is to procedurally generate large synthetic
training datasets randomizing the key features of the target environment (i.e.,
crop and weed species, type of soil, light conditions). More specifically, by
tuning these model parameters, and exploiting a few real-world textures, it is
possible to render a large amount of realistic views of an artificial
agricultural scenario with no effort. The generated data can be directly used
to train the model or to supplement real-world images. We validate the proposed
methodology by using as testbed a modern deep learning based image segmentation
architecture. We compare the classification results obtained using both real
and synthetic images as training data. The reported results confirm the

This Far, No Further: Introducing Virtual Borders to Mobile Robots Using a Laser Pointer
We address the problem of controlling the workspace of a 3-DoF mobile robot.
In a human-robot shared space, robots should navigate in a human-acceptable way
according to the users' demands. For this purpose, we employ virtual borders,
that are non-physical borders, to allow a user the restriction of the robot's
workspace. To this end, we propose an interaction method based on a laser
pointer to intuitively define virtual borders. This interaction method uses a
previously developed framework based on robot guidance to change the robot's
navigational behavior. Furthermore, we extend this framework to increase the
flexibility by considering different types of virtual borders, i.e. polygons
and curves separating an area. We evaluated our method with 15 non-expert users
concerning correctness, accuracy and teaching time. The experimental results
revealed a high accuracy and linear teaching time with respect to the border
length while correctly incorporating the borders into the robot's navigational
map. Finally, our user study showed that non-expert users can employ our

Structured Sparsity Models for Multiparty Speech Recovery from Reverberant Recordings
We tackle the multi-party speech recovery problem through modeling the
acoustic of the reverberant chambers. Our approach exploits structured sparsity
models to perform room modeling and speech recovery. We propose a scheme for
characterizing the room acoustic from the unknown competing speech sources
relying on localization of the early images of the speakers by sparse
approximation of the spatial spectra of the virtual sources in a free-space
model. The images are then clustered exploiting the low-rank structure of the
spectro-temporal components belonging to each source. This enables us to
identify the early support of the room impulse response function and its unique
map to the room geometry. To further tackle the ambiguity of the reflection
ratios, we propose a novel formulation of the reverberation model and estimate
the absorption coefficients through a convex optimization exploiting joint
sparsity model formulated upon spatio-spectral sparsity of concurrent speech
representation. The acoustic parameters are then incorporated for separating
individual speech signals through either structured sparse recovery or inverse
filtering the acoustic channels. The experiments conducted on real data
recordings demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach for
multi-party speech recovery and recognition.Comment: 31 page
FPGA-based High-Performance Collision Detection: An Enabling Technique for Image-Guided Robotic Surgery
Collision detection, which refers to the computational problem of finding the relative placement or con-figuration of two or more objects, is an essential component of many applications in computer graphics and robotics. In image-guided robotic surgery, real-time collision detection is critical for preserving healthy anatomical structures during the surgical procedure. However, the computational complexity of the problem usually results in algorithms that operate at low speed. In this paper, we present a fast and accurate algorithm for collision detection between Oriented-Bounding-Boxes (OBBs) that is suitable for real-time implementation. Our proposed Sweep and Prune algorithm can perform a preliminary filtering to reduce the number of objects that need to be tested by the classical Separating Axis Test algorithm, while the OBB pairs of interest are preserved. These OBB pairs are re-checked by the Separating Axis Test algorithm to obtain accurate overlapping status between them. To accelerate the execution, our Sweep and Prune algorithm is tailor-made for the proposed method. Meanwhile, a high performance scalable hardware architecture is proposed by analyzing the intrinsic parallelism of our algorithm, and is implemented on FPGA platform. Results show that our hardware design on the FPGA platform can achieve around 8X higher running speed than the software design on a CPU platform. As a result, the proposed algorithm can achieve a collision frame rate of 1 KHz, and fulfill the requirement for the medical surgery scenario of Robot Assisted Laparoscopy.published_or_final_versio
Data Management and Mining in Astrophysical Databases
We analyse the issues involved in the management and mining of astrophysical
data. The traditional approach to data management in the astrophysical field is
not able to keep up with the increasing size of the data gathered by modern
detectors. An essential role in the astrophysical research will be assumed by
automatic tools for information extraction from large datasets, i.e. data
mining techniques, such as clustering and classification algorithms. This asks
for an approach to data management based on data warehousing, emphasizing the
efficiency and simplicity of data access; efficiency is obtained using
multidimensional access methods and simplicity is achieved by properly handling
metadata. Clustering and classification techniques, on large datasets, pose
additional requirements: computational and memory scalability with respect to
the data size, interpretability and objectivity of clustering or classification
