    Comparative Study of Sensorless Control Methods of PMSM Drives

    Recently, permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) are increasingly used in high performance variable speed drives of many industrial applications. This is because the PMSM has many features, like high efficiency, compactness, high torque to inertia ratio, rapid dynamic response, simple modeling and control, and maintenance-free operation. In most applications, the presence of such a position sensor presents several disadvantages, such as reduced reliability, susceptibility to noise, additional cost and weight and increased complexity of the drive system. For these reasons, the development of alternative indirect methods for speed and position control becomes an important research topic. Many advantages of sensorless control such as reduced hardware complexity, low cost, reduced size, cable elimination, increased noise immunity, increased reliability and decreased maintenance. The key problem in sensorless vector control of ac drives is the accurate dynamic estimation of the stator flux vector over a wide speed range using only terminal variables (currents and voltages). The difficulty comprises state estimation at very low speeds where the fundamental excitation is low and the observer performance tends to be poor. The reasons are the observer sensitivity to model parameter variations, unmodeled nonlinearities and disturbances, limited accuracy of acquisition signals, drifts, and dc offsets. Poor speed estimation at low speed is attributed to data acquisition errors, voltage distortion due the PWM inverter and stator resistance drop which degrading the performance of sensorless drive. Moreover, the noises of system and measurements are considered other main problems. This paper presents a comprehensive study of the different methods of speed and position estimations for sensorless PMSM drives. A deep insight of the advantages and disadvantages of each method is investigated. Furthermore, the difficulties faced sensorless PMSM drives at low speeds as well as the reasons are highly demonstrated.     Sensorless control strategy for light-duty EVs and efficiency loss evaluation of high frequency injection under standardized urban driving cycles

    Sensorless control of Electric Vehicle (EV) drives is considered to be an effective approach to improve system reliability and to reduce component costs. In this paper, relevant aspects relating to the sensorless operation of EVs are reported. As an initial contribution, a hybrid sensorless control algorithm is presented that is suitable for a variety of synchronous machines. The proposed method is simple to implement and its relatively low computational cost is a desirable feature for automotive microprocessors with limited computational capabilities. An experimental validation of the proposal is performed on a full-scale automotive grade platform housing a 51¿kW Permanent Magnet assisted Synchronous Reluctance Machine (PM-assisted SynRM). Due to the operational requirements of EVs, both the strategy presented in this paper and other hybrid sensorless control strategies rely on High Frequency Injection (HFI) techniques, to determine the rotor position at standstill and at low speeds. The introduction of additional high frequency perturbations increases the power losses, thereby reducing the overall efficiency of the drive. Hence, a second contribution of this work is a simulation platform for the characterization of power losses in both synchronous machines and a Voltage Source Inverters (VSI). Finally, as a third contribution and considering the central concerns of efficiency and autonomy in EV applications, the impact of power losses are analyzed. The operational requirements of High Frequency Injection (HFI) are experimentally obtained and, using state-of-the-art digital simulation, a detailed loss analysis is performed during real automotive driving cycles.     Some Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) Sensorless Control Methods based on Operation Speed Area

    This paper compares some sensorless Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) controls for driving an electric vehicle in terms of operating speed. Sensorless control is a type of control method in which sensors, such as speed and position sensors, are not used to measure controlled variables.  The controlled variable value is estimated from the stator current measurement. Sensorless control performance is not as good as a sensor-based system. This paper aims are to recommend a control method for the PMSM sensorless controls that would be used to drive an electric vehicle. The methods that we will discuss are divided into four categories based on the operation speed area.  They are a startup, low speed, high speed, and low and high-speed areas. The low and high-speed area will be divided into with and without switching.  If PMSM more work at high speed, the most speed area that is used, we prefer to choose the method that works at high speed, that is, the modification or combination of two or more conventional methods

    Sensorless control of permanent magnet synchronous motors is nowadays used in many industrial, home and traction applications, as it allows the presence of a position sensor to be avoided with benefits for the cost and reliability of the drive. An estimation of the rotor position is required to perform the field-oriented control (FOC), which is the most common control scheme used for this type of motor. Many algorithms have been developed for this purpose, which use different techniques to derive the rotor angle from the stator voltages and currents. Among them, the so-called passive methods have gained increasing interest as they do not introduce additional losses and current distortion associated instead with algorithms based on the injection of high-frequency signals. The aim of this paper is to present a review of the main passive sensorless methods proposed in the technical literature over the last few years, analyzing their main features and principles of operation. An experimental comparison among the most promising passive sensorless algorithms is then reported, focusing on their performance in the low-speed operating region

    DFIG Based Wind Turbine System For Clemson Micro-grid

    As an important part of the smart grid, the micro-grid interfaces with distributed energy sources, loads and control devices. A doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) based wind turbine (WT) is the main power source of the presented project. The DFIG system is connected to the three phase AC grid via back-to-back power converter and an LCL filter. Decoupled q-d control strategies are investigated for the DFIG system. Matlab/Simulink results will show the performance of the proposed system. Hardware validation results are also presented and discussed. As a rapidly increasing research interest area the dc micro-grid has been extensively investigated. A topology is proposed to connect the DFIG based WT system to a dc link using a diode bridge and a three phase power converter. The rotor side of the DFIG is connected to the dc link through a converter while the stator is connecting to a three phase diode bridge with the dc side connected to a dc link. The control method is developed to regulate the stator frequency and the d-q axis voltage of the diode bridge to operate the DFIG at a desired stator frequency and generate the required power. Undesired harmonics in the three phase system will lead to excessive THD, a decrease the power quality and an increase the power loss of the system. An novel methods to compensate the current harmonics by controlling the power converter of the DFIG system is also proposed. With the DFIG connected to the three phase AC gird, the focus has been put into a scenario: a nonlinear load connected to the same node of the DFIG point of common coupling (PCC) to the gird, to draw the harmonics to the system. In the proposed dc link system, the diode bridge will introduce harmonics to the stator current of the DFIG. In both cases, the selected low-order harmonics are detected and calculated by a multiple reference frame estimator. The control methods of how to regulate the harmonics are developed for both the grid-side converter and the rotor-side converter based on multiple reference frame theory. A hybrid state observer for speed-sensorless motor drives of induction machines is also proposed. The hybrid observer comprises of a Luenberger observer and a sliding mode observer. For a conventional induction motor with shorted rotor, the stator currents and rotor flux linkages are estimating following a Luenberger observer. While, for a DFIG the similar approach will apply to the stator currents and rotor currents. The rotor speed is estimated using a sliding mode observer. The combination of two observers takes advantage of both approaches. The Luenberger observer is easy to realize and the computational burden is small. The sliding mode observer is known for its robustness with respect to model parameter errors and it will also provide a fast convergence rate. The chattering of the sliding mode observer is addressed by applying a boundary layer

This is the accepted manuscript version of an article which has been published in final form at https://doi.org/10.1016/j.isatra.2022.02.004This paper presents an optimal control scheme for a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (PMSG) coupled to a wind turbine operating without a position sensor. This sensorless scheme includes two observers: The first observer uses the flux to estimate the speed. However, an increase in the temperature or a degradation of the permanent magnet characteristics will result in a demagnetization of the machine causing a drop in the flux. The second observer is therefore used to estimate these changes in the flux from the speed and guaranties the stability of the system. This structure leads to a better exchange of information between the two observers, eliminates the problem of encoder and compensates for the demagnetization problem. To improve the precision of the speed estimator, the gain of the non-linear observer is optimized using Genetic Algorithm (GA) and the speed is obtained from a modified Phase Locked Loop (PLL) method using an optimized Sliding Mode Controller (SMC). Furthermore, to enhance the convergence speed of this observer scheme and improve the performance of the system a Fast Super Twisting Sliding Mode Control (FSTSMC) is introduced to reinforce the SMC strategy. A series of simulations are presented to show the effectiveness and robustness of proposed observer scheme.Peer reviewe

    Comparison of two novel MRAS strategies for identifying parameters in permanent magnet synchronous motors

    Two Model Reference Adaptive System (MRAS) estimators are developed for identifying the parameters of permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM) based on Lyapunov stability theorem and Popov stability criterion, respectively. The proposed estimators only need online detection of currents, voltages and rotor rotation speed, and are effective in the estimation of stator resistance, inductance and rotor flux-linkage simultaneously. Their performances are compared and verified through simulations and experiments. It shows that the two estimators are simple and have good robustness against parameter variation and are accurate in parameter tracking. However, the estimator based on Popov stability criterion, which can overcome the parameter variation in a practical system, is superior in terms of response speed and convergence speed since there are both proportional and integral units in the estimator in contrast to only one integral unit in the estimator based on Lyapunov stability theorem. In addition, there is no need of the expert experience which is required in designing a Lyapunov function

With the random nature of wind speed this observer is required to provide a position and speed estimates over a wide speed range. The proposed hybrid structure combines two observers and a switching algorithm to select the appropriate observer based on a modified weighting coefficients method. The first observer is a higher-order sliding mode observer (HOSMO) based on modified super twisting algorithm (STA) with correction term and operates in the medium and nominal wind speed ranges. The second observer is used in the low speed range and is based on the rotor flux estimation and the control by injecting a direct reference current different to zero. The stability of each observer has been successfully assessed using an appropriate Lyapunov function. The simulation results obtained show the effectiveness and performance of the proposed observer and control scheme.Peer reviewe

    Performance comparison of conventional synchronous reluctance machines and PM-assisted types with combined star-delta winding

    This paper compares four prototype Synchronous Reluctance Motors (SynRMs) having an identical geometry of iron lamination stacks in the stator and rotor. Two different stator winding layouts are employed: a conventional three-phase star connection and a combined star-delta winding. In addition, two rotors are considered: a conventional rotor without magnets and a rotor with ferrite magnets. The performance of the four SynRMs is evaluated using a two-dimensional (2D) Finite Element Model (FEM). For the same copper volume and current, the combined star-delta-connected stator with Permanent Magnets (PMs) in the rotor corresponds to an approximately 22% increase in the output torque at rated current and speed compared to the conventional machine. This improvement is mainly thanks to adding ferrite PMs in the rotor as well as to the improved winding factor of the combined star-delta winding. The torque gain increases up to 150% for low current. Moreover, the rated efficiency is 93.60% compared to 92.10% for the conventional machine. On the other hand, the impact on the power factor and losses of SynRM when using the star-delta windings instead of the star windings is merely negligible. The theoretical results are experimentally validated using four identical prototype machines with identical lamination stacks but different rotors and winding layouts
