    Fault-tolerant formation driving mechanism designed for heterogeneous MAVs-UGVs groups

    A fault-tolerant method for stabilization and navigation of 3D heterogeneous formations is proposed in this paper. The presented Model Predictive Control (MPC) based approach enables to deploy compact formations of closely cooperating autonomous aerial and ground robots in surveillance scenarios without the necessity of a precise external localization. Instead, the proposed method relies on a top-view visual relative localization provided by the micro aerial vehicles flying above the ground robots and on a simple yet stable visual based navigation using images from an onboard monocular camera. The MPC based schema together with a fault detection and recovery mechanism provide a robust solution applicable in complex environments with static and dynamic obstacles. The core of the proposed leader-follower based formation driving method consists in a representation of the entire 3D formation as a convex hull projected along a desired path that has to be followed by the group. Such an approach provides non-collision solution and respects requirements of the direct visibility between the team members. The uninterrupted visibility is crucial for the employed top-view localization and therefore for the stabilization of the group. The proposed formation driving method and the fault recovery mechanisms are verified by simulations and hardware experiments presented in the paper

    Contact aware robust semi-autonomous teleoperation of mobile manipulators

    In the context of human-robot collaboration, cooperation and teaming, the use of mobile manipulators is widespread on applications involving unpredictable or hazardous environments for humans operators, like space operations, waste management and search and rescue on disaster scenarios. Applications where the manipulator's motion is controlled remotely by specialized operators. Teleoperation of manipulators is not a straightforward task, and in many practical cases represent a common source of failures. Common issues during the remote control of manipulators are: increasing control complexity with respect the mechanical degrees of freedom; inadequate or incomplete feedback to the user (i.e. limited visualization or knowledge of the environment); predefined motion directives may be incompatible with constraints or obstacles imposed by the environment. In the latter case, part of the manipulator may get trapped or blocked by some obstacle in the environment, failure that cannot be easily detected, isolated nor counteracted remotely. While control complexity can be reduced by the introduction of motion directives or by abstraction of the robot motion, the real-time constraint of the teleoperation task requires the transfer of the least possible amount of data over the system's network, thus limiting the number of physical sensors that can be used to model the environment. Therefore, it is of fundamental to define alternative perceptive strategies to accurately characterize different interaction with the environment without relying on specific sensory technologies. In this work, we present a novel approach for safe teleoperation, that takes advantage of model based proprioceptive measurement of the robot dynamics to robustly identify unexpected collisions or contact events with the environment. Each identified collision is translated on-the-fly into a set of local motion constraints, allowing the exploitation of the system redundancies for the computation of intelligent control laws for automatic reaction, without requiring human intervention and minimizing the disturbance of the task execution (or, equivalently, the operator efforts). More precisely, the described system consist in two different building blocks. The first, for detecting unexpected interactions with the environment (perceptive block). The second, for intelligent and autonomous reaction after the stimulus (control block). The perceptive block is responsible of the contact event identification. In short, the approach is based on the claim that a sensorless collision detection method for robot manipulators can be extended to the field of mobile manipulators, by embedding it within a statistical learning framework. The control deals with the intelligent and autonomous reaction after the contact or impact with the environment occurs, and consist on an motion abstraction controller with a prioritized set of constrains, where the highest priority correspond to the robot reconfiguration after a collision is detected; when all related dynamical effects have been compensated, the controller switch again to the basic control mode

    Parallel Manipulators

    In recent years, parallel kinematics mechanisms have attracted a lot of attention from the academic and industrial communities due to potential applications not only as robot manipulators but also as machine tools. Generally, the criteria used to compare the performance of traditional serial robots and parallel robots are the workspace, the ratio between the payload and the robot mass, accuracy, and dynamic behaviour. In addition to the reduced coupling effect between joints, parallel robots bring the benefits of much higher payload-robot mass ratios, superior accuracy and greater stiffness; qualities which lead to better dynamic performance. The main drawback with parallel robots is the relatively small workspace. A great deal of research on parallel robots has been carried out worldwide, and a large number of parallel mechanism systems have been built for various applications, such as remote handling, machine tools, medical robots, simulators, micro-robots, and humanoid robots.     Trends in vehicle motion control for automated driving on public roads

    In this paper, we describe how vehicle systems and the vehicle motion control are affected by automated driving on public roads. We describe the redundancy needed for a road vehicle to meet certain safety goals. The concept of system safety as well as system solutions to fault tolerant actuation of steering and braking and the associated fault tolerant power supply is described. Notably restriction of the operational domain in case of reduced capability of the driving automation system is discussed. Further we consider path tracking, state estimation of vehicle motion control required for automated driving as well as an example of a minimum risk manoeuver and redundant steering by means of differential braking. The steering by differential braking could offer heterogeneous or dissimilar redundancy that complements the redundancy of described fault tolerant steering systems for driving automation equipped vehicles. Finally, the important topic of verification of driving automation systems is addressed

    A Contribution to the Design of Highly Redundant Compliant Aerial Manipulation Systems

    Es ist vorhersehbar, dass die Luftmanipulatoren in den nächsten Jahrzehnten für viele Aufgaben eingesetzt werden, die entweder zu gefährlich oder zu teuer sind, um sie mit herkömmlichen Methoden zu bewältigen. In dieser Arbeit wird eine neuartige Lösung für die Gesamtsteuerung von hochredundanten Luftmanipulationssystemen vorgestellt. Die Ergebnisse werden auf eine Referenzkonfiguration angewendet, die als universelle Plattform für die Durchführung verschiedener Luftmanipulationsaufgaben etabliert wird. Diese Plattform besteht aus einer omnidirektionalen Drohne und einem seriellen Manipulator. Um den modularen Regelungsentwurf zu gewährleisten, werden zwei rechnerisch effiziente Algorithmen untersucht, um den virtuellen Eingang den Aktuatorbefehlen zuzuordnen. Durch die Integration eines auf einem künstlichen neuronalen Netz basierenden Diagnosemoduls und der rekonfigurierbaren Steuerungszuordnung in den Regelkreis, wird die Fehlertoleranz für die Drohne erzielt. Außerdem wird die Motorsättigung durch Rekonfiguration der Geschwindigkeits- und Beschleunigungsprofile behandelt. Für die Beobachtung der externen Kräfte und Drehmomente werden zwei Filter vorgestellt. Dies ist notwendig, um ein nachgiebiges Verhalten des Endeffektors durch die achsenselektive Impedanzregelung zu erreichen. Unter Ausnutzung der Redundanz des vorgestellten Luftmanipulators wird ein Regler entworfen, der nicht nur die Referenz der Endeffektor-Bewegung verfolgt, sondern auch priorisierte sekundäre Aufgaben ausführt. This thesis presents a novel solution for the overall control of highly redundant aerial manipulation systems. The results are applied to a reference configuration established as a universal platform for performing various aerial manipulation tasks. The platform consists of an omnidirectional multirotor UAV and a serial manipulator. To ensure modular control design, two computationally efficient algorithms are studied to allocate the virtual input to actuator commands. Fault tolerance of the aerial vehicle is achieved by integrating a diagnostic module based on an artificial neural network and the reconfigurable control allocation into the control loop. Besides, the risk of input saturation of individual rotors is minimized by predicting and reconfiguring the speed and acceleration responses. Two filter-based observers are presented to provide the knowledge of external forces and torques, which is necessary to achieve compliant behavior of the end-effector through an axis-selective impedance control in the outer loop. Exploiting the redundancy of the proposed aerial manipulator, the author has designed a control law to achieve the desired end-effector motion and execute secondary tasks in order of priority.     Sensor Fault Detection and Fault-Tolerant Estimation of Vehicle States

    Manufacturing smarter and more reliable vehicles is a progressing trend in the automotive industry. Many of today’s vehicles are equipped with driver assistant, automated driving and advanced stability control systems. These systems rely on measured or estimated information to accomplish their tasks. Evidently, reliability of the sensory measurements and the estimate information is essential for desirable operation of advanced vehicle subsystems. This thesis proposes a novel methodology to detect vehicle sensor faults, reconstruct the faulty sensory signals and deliver fault-tolerant estimation of vehicle states. The proposed method can detect failures of the longitudinal, lateral and vertical acceleration sensors, roll rate, yaw rate and pitch rate sensors, steering angle sensor, suspension height sensors, and motor torque sensors. The proposed structure can deliver fault-tolerant estimations of the vehicle states including the longitudinal, lateral and vertical tire forces, longitudinal and lateral velocities, roll angle, and pitch angle. Road grade and bank angles are also estimated in this method even in presence of sensor faults. The unified structure in this thesis is realized by fusion of analytical redundancy relations, fault detection observers and adaptive state estimation algorithms. The proposed method can isolate the faults for vehicle stability and control systems and deliver accurate estimation of vehicle states required by such systems despite sensor failures. The methods developed in this thesis are validated through experiments and can operate reliably in various driving scenarios
