Underground Mining Monitoring and Communication Systems based on ZigBee and GIS
ZigBee as a wireless sensor network (WSN) was developed for underground mine monitoring and communication systems. The radio wave attenuations between ZigBee nodes were investigated to measure underground communication distances. Various sensor node arrangements of ZigBee topologies were evaluated. A system integration of a WSN-assisted GIS for underground mining monitoring and communication from a surface office was proposed. The controllable and uncontrollable parameters of underground environments were assessed to establish a reliable ZigBee network
CogCell: Cognitive Interplay between 60GHz Picocells and 2.4/5GHz Hotspots in the 5G Era
Rapid proliferation of wireless communication devices and the emergence of a
variety of new applications have triggered investigations into next-generation
mobile broadband systems, i.e., 5G. Legacy 2G--4G systems covering large areas
were envisioned to serve both indoor and outdoor environments. However, in the
5G-era, 80\% of overall traffic is expected to be generated in indoors. Hence,
the current approach of macro-cell mobile network, where there is no
differentiation between indoors and outdoors, needs to be reconsidered. We
envision 60\,GHz mmWave picocell architecture to support high-speed indoor and
hotspot communications. We envisage the 5G indoor network as a combination of-,
and interplay between, 2.4/5\,GHz having robust coverage and 60\,GHz links
offering high datarate. This requires an intelligent coordination and
cooperation. We propose 60\,GHz picocellular network architecture, called
CogCell, leveraging the ubiquitous WiFi. We propose to use 60\,GHz for the data
plane and 2.4/5GHz for the control plane. The hybrid network architecture
considers an opportunistic fall-back to 2.4/5\,GHz in case of poor connectivity
in the 60\,GHz domain. Further, to avoid the frequent re-beamforming in 60\,GHz
directional links due to mobility, we propose a cognitive module -- a
sensor-assisted intelligent beam switching procedure -- which reduces the
communication overhead. We believe that the CogCell concept will help future
indoor communications and possibly outdoor hotspots, where mobile stations and

Cellular Underwater Wireless Optical CDMA Network: Potentials and Challenges
Underwater wireless optical communications is an emerging solution to the
expanding demand for broadband links in oceans and seas. In this paper, a
cellular underwater wireless optical code division multiple-access (UW-OCDMA)
network is proposed to provide broadband links for commercial and military
applications. The optical orthogonal codes (OOC) are employed as signature
codes of underwater mobile users. Fundamental key aspects of the network such
as its backhaul architecture, its potential applications and its design
challenges are presented. In particular, the proposed network is used as
infrastructure of centralized, decentralized and relay-assisted underwater
sensor networks for high-speed real-time monitoring. Furthermore, a promising
underwater localization and positioning scheme based on this cellular network
is presented. Finally, probable design challenges such as cell edge coverage,
blockage avoidance, power control and increasing the network capacity are

Dynamic Channel Access Scheme for Interference Mitigation in Relay-assisted Intra-WBANs
This work addresses problems related to interference mitigation in a single
wireless body area network (WBAN). In this paper, We propose a distributed
\textit{C}ombined carrier sense multiple access with collision avoidance
(CSMA/CA) with \textit{F}lexible time division multiple access (\textit{T}DMA)
scheme for \textit{I}nterference \textit{M}itigation in relay-assisted
intra-WBAN, namely, CFTIM. In CFTIM scheme, non interfering sources
(transmitters) use CSMA/CA to communicate with relays. Whilst, high interfering
sources and best relays use flexible TDMA to communicate with coordinator (C)
through using stable channels. Simulation results of the proposed scheme are
compared to other schemes and consequently CFTIM scheme outperforms in all
cases. These results prove that the proposed scheme mitigates interference,
extends WBAN energy lifetime and improves the throughput. To further reduce the
interference level, we analytically show that the outage probability can be

Robotic Wireless Sensor Networks
In this chapter, we present a literature survey of an emerging, cutting-edge,
and multi-disciplinary field of research at the intersection of Robotics and
Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) which we refer to as Robotic Wireless Sensor
Networks (RWSN). We define a RWSN as an autonomous networked multi-robot system
that aims to achieve certain sensing goals while meeting and maintaining
certain communication performance requirements, through cooperative control,
learning and adaptation. While both of the component areas, i.e., Robotics and
WSN, are very well-known and well-explored, there exist a whole set of new
opportunities and research directions at the intersection of these two fields
which are relatively or even completely unexplored. One such example would be
the use of a set of robotic routers to set up a temporary communication path
between a sender and a receiver that uses the controlled mobility to the
advantage of packet routing. We find that there exist only a limited number of
articles to be directly categorized as RWSN related works whereas there exist a
range of articles in the robotics and the WSN literature that are also relevant
to this new field of research. To connect the dots, we first identify the core
problems and research trends related to RWSN such as connectivity,
localization, routing, and robust flow of information. Next, we classify the
existing research on RWSN as well as the relevant state-of-the-arts from
robotics and WSN community according to the problems and trends identified in
the first step. Lastly, we analyze what is missing in the existing literature,
and identify topics that require more research attention in the future
Wearable flexible lightweight modular RFID tag with integrated energy harvester
A novel wearable radio frequency identification (RFID) tag with sensing, processing, and decision-taking capability is presented for operation in the 2.45-GHz RFID superhigh frequency (SHF) band. The tag is powered by an integrated light harvester, with a flexible battery serving as an energy buffer. The proposed active tag features excellent wearability, very high read range, enhanced functionality, flexible interfacing with diverse low-power sensors, and extended system autonomy through an innovative holistic microwave system design paradigm that takes antenna design into consideration from the very early stages. Specifically, a dedicated textile shorted circular patch antenna with monopolar radiation pattern is designed and optimized for highly efficient and stable operation within the frequency band of operation. In this process, the textile antenna's functionality is augmented by reusing its surface as an integration platform for light-energy-harvesting, sensing, processing, and transceiver hardware, without sacrificing antenna performance or the wearer's comfort. The RFID tag is validated by measuring its stand-alone and on-body characteristics in free-space conditions. Moreover, measurements in a real-world scenario demonstrate an indoor read range up to 23 m in nonline-of-sight indoor propagation conditions, enabling interrogation by a reader situated in another room. In addition, the RFID platform only consumes 168.3 mu W, when sensing and processing are performed every 60 s
