    This work deals with the recent trends of maps on the Web. It is based on the finding that the maps have been shaped to the characteristics of network communications, that requires the integration and sharing of information. The combination of these two goals, in computational vocabulary, is called interoperability. This is based on two distinct processes: standardization and systematization. On the Web, the volume of maps produced increased exponentially and its functionalities amplified. However, part of the terms related to maps become ephemeral due to constant innovations arising from technological development. One of the main challenges is to make the content of maps universally comprehensible by humans and machines. The Spatial Data Infrastructures, collaborative maps, wide range of localization strategies, digital earth and cloud computing reveal important trends of development.Este trabalho aborda a trajetória recente dos mapas na Web. Baseia-se na constatação de que os mapas se moldaram às características da comunicação via rede, que demanda a integração e o compartilhamento das informações. A conjugação destas duas metas, no meio computacional, é denominada de interoperabilidade. Esta, é baseada em dois processos distintos: padronização e sistematização. Em decorrência da sua veiculação na Web, constata-se que o volume de mapas produzidos aumentou exponencialmente e suas funcionalidades se ampliaram. No entanto, parte dos termos relacionados aos mapas se tornou efêmera em virtude das constantes inovações oriundas do desenvolvimento tecnológico. Um dos principais desafios é tornar o conteúdo dos mapas compreensível universalmente, por homens e máquinas. As Infraestruturas de Dados Espaciais, os mapas colaborativos, a diversificação das estratégias de localização, a Digital Earth e a computação em nuvens revelam importantes tendências de desenvolvimento

    Next-Generation Digital Earth: A position paper from the Vespucci Initiative for the Advancement of Geographic Information Science

    This position paper is the outcome of a joint reflection by a group of international geographic and environmental scientists from government, industry, and academia brought together by the Vespucci Initiative for the Advancement of Geographic Information Science, and the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission. It argues that the vision of Digital Earth put forward by Vice-President Al Gore 10 years ago needs to be re-evaluated in the light of the many developments in the fields of information technology, data infrastructures, and earth observation that have taken place since. It focuses the vision on the next-generation Digital Earth and identifies priority research areas to support this vision. The paper is offered as input for discussion among different stakeholder communities with the aim to shape research and policy over the next 5-10 years

    Not just a tool. Taking context into account in the development of a mobile App for rural water supply in Tanzania

    The 'eGovernance' hype around the potential of mobile phone and geoweb technologies for enhancing 'good governance' is soaring. In East Africa, the extensive use of mobile telephony adds to the imagined promises of ICT. We reflect on the assumptions made by the proponents of such tools, using our own action research project as an example. We took great care to consider context in the development of software for enhancing empowerment and accountability in rural water supply in Tanzania. However, we found that the rural water supply context in Tanzania is much more complex than the contexts for which successful mApps have been developed previously. Institutional analysis and public administration theory help to understand why. Rural water supply shows institutional hybridity, with water being at the same time a private, public and common-pool good. In addition, in accountability relations, many informal mechanisms prevail where explicit reporting is not relevant. Finally, our proposal sat uneasily with other ongoing iGovernment initiatives. We conclude that we need to consider eGovernance tools as political Apps that can be expected to trigger political response

    Advertising has been one of the most valuable marketing tools for years by means of a massive, wide-ranging and vertical approach between customers and advertisers. However, a new tendency known as pervasive advertising suggests an evolution of the classical concept towards a more interactive, customized, and horizontal environment that seeks to improve the impact and efficiency of conventional advertising. As a result of the support of emerging technologies related to the development of smartphones and smart TVs, there are no doubts about pervasive advertising potential and its value as a rich research field. This article introduces a conceptual model, which compiles the most relevant research areas related to pervasive computing applied to advertising supported on a smart TV – smartphone cooperation framework.La publicidad ha sido durante años una de las herramientas más valiosas del mercadeo a través de un enfoque principalmente masivo, generalizado y vertical entre clientes y anunciantes. No obstante, una nueva corriente conocida como publicidad ubicua marca una evolución en el concepto clásico hacia entornos más interactivos, personalizados y horizontales que busca mejorar la eficiencia y el impacto de la publicidad convencional. Gracias al apoyo de tecnologías emergentes que se sustentan en la evolución de los smartphones y los smart TV, el potencial de la publicidad ubicua es indudable, lo cual la ha convertido en un terreno fértil de investigación.
