    Challenges in the Design and Implementation of IoT Testbeds in Smart-Cities : A Systematic Review

    Advancements in wireless communication and the increased accessibility to low-cost sensing and data processing IoT technologies have increased the research and development of urban monitoring systems. Most smart city research projects rely on deploying proprietary IoT testbeds for indoor and outdoor data collection. Such testbeds typically rely on a three-tier architecture composed of the Endpoint, the Edge, and the Cloud. Managing the system's operation whilst considering the security and privacy challenges that emerge, such as data privacy controls, network security, and security updates on the devices, is challenging. This work presents a systematic study of the challenges of developing, deploying and managing urban monitoring testbeds, as experienced in a series of urban monitoring research projects, followed by an analysis of the relevant literature. By identifying the challenges in the various projects and organising them under the V-model development lifecycle levels, we provide a reference guide for future projects. Understanding the challenges early on will facilitate current and future smart-cities IoT research projects to reduce implementation time and deliver secure and resilient testbeds

    Antenna Selection With Beam Squint Compensation for Integrated Sensing and Communications

    Next-generation wireless networks strive for higher communication rates, ultra-low latency, seamless connectivity, and high-resolution sensing capabilities. To meet these demands, terahertz (THz)-band signal processing is envisioned as a key technology offering wide bandwidth and sub-millimeter wavelength. Furthermore, THz integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) paradigm has emerged jointly access spectrum and reduced hardware costs through a unified platform. To address the challenges in THz propagation, THz-ISAC systems employ extremely large antenna arrays to improve the beamforming gain for communications with high data rates and sensing with high resolution. However, the cost and power consumption of implementing fully digital beamformers are prohibitive. While hybrid analog/digital beamforming can be a potential solution, the use of subcarrier-independent analog beamformers leads to the beam-squint phenomenon where different subcarriers observe distinct directions because of adopting the same analog beamformer across all subcarriers. In this paper, we develop a sparse array architecture for THz-ISAC with hybrid beamforming to provide a cost-effective solution. We analyze the antenna selection problem under beam-squint influence and introduce a manifold optimization approach for hybrid beamforming design. To reduce computational and memory costs, we propose novel algorithms leveraging grouped subarrays, quantized performance metrics, and sequential optimization. These approaches yield a significant reduction in the number of possible subarray configurations, which enables us to devise a neural network with classification model to accurately perform antenna selection.Comment: 14pages10figures, submitted to IEE

    Beam scanning by liquid-crystal biasing in a modified SIW structure

    A fixed-frequency beam-scanning 1D antenna based on Liquid Crystals (LCs) is designed for application in 2D scanning with lateral alignment. The 2D array environment imposes full decoupling of adjacent 1D antennas, which often conflicts with the LC requirement of DC biasing: the proposed design accommodates both. The LC medium is placed inside a Substrate Integrated Waveguide (SIW) modified to work as a Groove Gap Waveguide, with radiating slots etched on the upper broad wall, that radiates as a Leaky-Wave Antenna (LWA). This allows effective application of the DC bias voltage needed for tuning the LCs. At the same time, the RF field remains laterally confined, enabling the possibility to lay several antennas in parallel and achieve 2D beam scanning. The design is validated by simulation employing the actual properties of a commercial LC medium

    Lost in the City? - A Scoping Review of 5G Enabled Location-Based Urban Scenarios

    5G mobile network technologies and scenarios with the associated innovations receive growing interest among academics and practitioners. Current literature on 5G technologies discusses several scenarios and specific chances and challenges. However, 5G literature is fragmented and not systematically reviewed. We conducted a scoping review on 5G applications in urban scenarios. We reviewed 1,394 papers and identified 20 studies about urban logistics and emergency indoor localization. Our review accumulates current academic knowledge on these scenarios and identifies six further research directions in four research fields. It reveals several further research opportunities, e.g., regarding trust and privacy concerns. We review and discuss 5G literature for academics and practitioners, contribute towards more tailored 5G research and reflect on cost- efficient 5G applications in urban scenarios

    Key technologies for safe and autonomous drones

    Drones/UAVs are able to perform air operations that are very difficult to be performed by manned aircrafts. In addition, drones' usage brings significant economic savings and environmental benefits, while reducing risks to human life. In this paper, we present key technologies that enable development of drone systems. The technologies are identified based on the usages of drones (driven by COMP4DRONES project use cases). These technologies are grouped into four categories: U-space capabilities, system functions, payloads, and tools. Also, we present the contributions of the COMP4DRONES project to improve existing technologies. These contributions aim to ease drones’ customization, and enable their safe operation.This project has received funding from the ECSEL Joint Undertaking (JU) under grant agreement No 826610. The JU receives support from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme and Spain, Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, France, Italy, Latvia, Netherlands. The total project budget is 28,590,748.75 EUR (excluding ESIF partners), while the requested grant is 7,983,731.61 EUR to ECSEL JU, and 8,874,523.84 EUR of National and ESIF Funding.     Reinforcement Learning Empowered Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Assisted Internet of Things Networks

    This thesis aims towards performance enhancement for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) assisted internet of things network (IoT). In this realm, novel reinforcement learning (RL) frameworks have been proposed for solving intricate joint optimisation scenarios. These scenarios include, uplink, downlink and combined. The multi-access technique utilised is non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA), as key enabler in this regime. The outcomes of this research entail, enhancement in key performance metrics, such as sum-rate, energy efficiency and consequent reduction in outage. For the scenarios involving uplink transmissions by IoT devices, adaptive and tandem rein forcement learning frameworks have been developed. The aim is to maximise capacity over fixed UAV trajectory. The adaptive framework is utilised in a scenario wherein channel suitability is ascertained for uplink transmissions utilising a fixed clustering regime in NOMA. Tandem framework is utilised in a scenario wherein multiple-channel resource suitability is ascertained along with, power allocation, dynamic clustering and IoT node associations to NOMA clusters and channels. In scenarios involving downlink transmission to IoT devices, an ensemble RL (ERL) frame work is proposed for sum-rate enhancement over fixed UAV trajectory. For dynamic UAV trajec tory, hybrid decision framework (HDF) is proposed for energy efficiency optimisation. Downlink transmission power and bandwidth is managed for NOMA transmissions over fixed and dynamic UAV trajectories, facilitating IoT networks. In UAV enabled relaying scenario, for control system plants and their respective remotely deployed sensors, a head start reinforcement learning framework based on deep learning is de veloped and implemented. NOMA is invoked, in both uplink and downlink transmissions for IoT network. Dynamic NOMA clustering, power management and nodes association along with UAV height control is jointly managed. The primary aim is the, enhancement of net sum-rate and its subsequent manifestation in facilitating the IoT assisted use case. The simulation results relating to aforesaid scenarios indicate, enhanced sum-rate, energy efficiency and reduced outage for UAV-assisted IoT networks. The proposed RL frameworks surpass in performance in comparison to existing frameworks as benchmarks for the same sce narios. The simulation platforms utilised are MATLAB and Python, for network modeling, RL framework design and validation

    A field-based computing approach to sensing-driven clustering in robot swarms

    Swarm intelligence leverages collective behaviours emerging from interaction and activity of several “simple” agents to solve problems in various environments. One problem of interest in large swarms featuring a variety of sub-goals is swarm clustering, where the individuals of a swarm are assigned or choose to belong to zero or more groups, also called clusters. In this work, we address the sensing-based swarm clustering problem, where clusters are defined based on both the values sensed from the environment and the spatial distribution of the values and the agents. Moreover, we address it in a setting characterised by decentralisation of computation and interaction, and dynamicity of values and mobility of agents. For the solution, we propose to use the field-based computing paradigm, where computation and interaction are expressed in terms of a functional manipulation of fields, distributed and evolving data structures mapping each individual of the system to values over time. We devise a solution to sensing-based swarm clustering leveraging multiple concurrent field computations with limited domain and evaluate the approach experimentally by means of simulations, showing that the programmed swarms form clusters that well reflect the underlying environmental phenomena dynamics
